Hip replacement- how long were you in hospital?

I had my first hip replaced 20 years ago (undiagnosed hereditary dysplasia) at the age of 55 and was in hospital for five days. I had the second on in 2016 and was in for three days. My sister had both of hers done within the last five years and was in and out in two/three days. It's getting faster and faster. I got support for the wounds from district nurse, and eventually physio from the hospital after about eight weeks. But they give you a leaflet when you leave hospital showing the various exercises you should be doing on your own

Don’t forget that we can all self refer physiotherapy. I didn’t see anyone after my thr last year but was able self refer fir hydro therapy.

Ihad a late afternoon op under epidural,on a wednesday,discharged friday AM up all day on Thursday.

I was in for two weeks . I was in my late 40s and, being a polio’ survivor,had additional problems and it was my non- paralysed leg that was being operated on so I literally hadn’t a leg to stand on. The aftercare was amazing. However, I knew of people who’d had it done at different hospitals and got no help at all. Postcode differences. Old story.

My niece was in 12 days waiting for emergency surgery on a shattered knee cap due to a motor bike accident. Delayed due to doctor's strike action and in terrible pain despite morphine. She went home 2 days later but was told recovering can be as long as 12 months. Learning to bend her leg now with physio 3months after the operation.

I’m due to have a thr in November, having waited a year & a change of Hospital as they refused to do it whilst I had vertigo. Present hospital & consult are prepared to go ahead but even though I’m having a spinal injection they want me to have opiods ( I don’t want to be sedated ). I’m highly allergic to them & almost every medicine but they won’t take no for an answer so I feel like cancelling the whole thing, although my pain is unbearable ( bone on bone) & I can’t be without my crutches. Anyone else forced to have them?

Joplin May I ask why you don’t want to be sedated ? Last week I had the spinal and sedation. Wonderful! I came back from theatre around 4 pm and at 5 pm was sitting up enjoying my dinner.

I began the hip and knee thread just befire I had my new hip.. It’s under health on the forums but even though it’s been going for well for over 18 months now, and on series 3, our posts don’t often get into the active list.None of us know why, tis a mystery.
Everyone welcome, there’s loads of helpful stuff on there and lots of experts too.

I can confirm that, you are so much more alert, I had a Knee Replacement and Hip Replacement within 6 months of each other last year. I was ready for discharge 48hrs after my Hip, day 4 for my Knee (far more painful) it is they way to go.

I was so grateful for the Knee and Hip thread on here. Lots of support and advice.

Just over a year later from my Hip, back at the Gym, more active and please to say lost over 2 stone now I can move , almost back to my original weight.

My last hit op was after someone pushed me onto the road! I was taken straight to hospital, Xrayed, etc. but I had to wait for a particular surgeon to come on duty which was two or three days, apparently it was a nasty break and I was kept in for ten days after the op. Probably would have been longer I hadn't kept asking when could I go to my local hospital? Had Physiotherapy when I got home for a week or so. apparently I still have a limp, and if I sit on the floor I have great difficulty getting up. Apart from that - fine.

For FindingNemo - that is quite disgraceful Contact your MP (doesn't matter which party).

I've had both sides done, planned after about 2.5 years slowly moving up the queue. One was at an NHS hospital (but specialising in such treatment, Nuffield Orthopedic in Oxford), the 2nd was at a private place, but paid for by NHS.

In both cases, I was in on day 1, op that afternoon, out by teatime on day 3. The first one gave me a big batch of exercises to do (and folk SHOULD do them!!), the second one called me back for outpatient sessions with their physio, but he soon realised I was fine anyway.

I never needed more than a single stick, but some folk like 2 sticks, or crutches, oh, and I could pretty much walk unaided after a week. However, NOT ALL NHS hospitals will do the ops as well, BEWARE if you get sent to a place that does all kinds of surgery, as they're not so used to the op?!

Oh, and as with most treatments, the NHS service round the Uk will vary quite a bit!!

I was on the waiting list over 2 yrs with no date in sight for my hip replacement, in the end due to the pain I went private.
I went in in the morning had it done that evening and was discharged three days later, I had 10 minutes of physio which only consisted of walking up a couple of stairs.
No follow up by anyone and I paid over £10,000 for that.

Dr. Watson. Thank you for your support. I have contacted our MP who was as much use as a chocolate teapot. His first email wished my DH a good recovery "after his operation" he obviously had not read my email!

Also contacted NHS England, Integrated Care Board, Wes Streeting, Steve Barclay, Keir Starmer, PALS. All have passed the buck and not answered any questions.

Ginny, Just seen your post. I have a bad index finger which they said they couldn’t protect ( & I need it for playing the piano - & more ) so I have to be awake to make sure they don’t do more damage. Also very sensitive to all drugs, etc. so I want to know what’s happening. A nurse has already damaged my hip & leg even more at the pre-op, by throwing it over the bed when I couldn’t lift it. I now need to know everything they’re doing!
