Having had bad acid reflux my doctor put me on this about 12 months ago. I have just been to same day Doctor because I had symptoms of nausea, sweating and increased heart rate, but he did an ECG and did my vital signs and apparently I’m okay, but he did say I should increase the omeprazole from one a day to two a day because he thinks it will help with the nausea, but I am reluctant to do this as have heard some not so positive things about this drug,So any experience shared will help.
Thanks in anticipation ..

Is this the first time your Dr has seen you since you were put on omeprozole. 12 months is a long time without any checks.
But, he has checked you now so you can only assume that all is ok.

Shinamae Please Google the side effects of Omeprazole (there are many). I would think carefully whether you really want to take it long term which is not recommended.

I have now decided to stop taking it after reading some not so pleasant side-effects.. just see how it goes

No, it wasn’t my regular Doctor. It was the same day team if I want to see my regular doctor, I can take up to a month to get a face-to-face appointment 😬

I can’t take Omeprazole regularly, it lowers my sodium, Famotidine is my prescribed drug for hernia/reflux. I take metocloprimide as and when for nausea caused by the reflux.
Perhaps ask for something else.

I had to change to Lansprozole for my hiatus hernia and also take Stemetil for nausea.
Metoclopramide makes me very unwell.

I'm concerned that you seem to have decided instead of doubling the dose as suggested by a medical professional, to stop taking the medication completely based on what you've read on Google. I think it would be advisable to discuss your decision with your GP. Stopping omeprazole may increase your symptoms significantly. Maybe stay on your current dose until you can see your GP who will be able to suggest alternative medication.

I would discuss with your Dr about stopping or cutting your dose before you do so yourself. They can suggest alternative medication that you might not know about.

I took it without problems for about a year but only to counteract any problems with Naproxen. I no longer take either as I have CKD.

Sometimes a chat with the practice pharmacist can be very helpful.

You will need to wean yourself off, it's not something you can just stop or you'll get rebound symptoms. Have a chat with your doc.

I am a numpty.
Stemetil is metoclopramide! It is Metronizadole, aka Flagyl, which put me in hospital for a week.

Why bother going to a doctor for advice if you are going to rely on Google to make a decision on medication?

I would say go and see a pharmacist but their advice will probably be checked against a random site.

You have to trust someone for medical advice, for me it would be a doctor or pharmacist with checkable qualifications. If I were not happy with my treatment I would go back to the prescriber and discuss my worries or symptoms.

He was not my regular doctor. I went to him because of the symptoms I explained in my opening post.(where in my post did I say I used Google for my information??)
I came on here to ask for experiences of peoples usage of this drug..
To even speak to my Doctor on the phone, could take two or three weeks… I have just phoned my surgery He is fully booked till the end of next week for even a phone call then he is on sabbatical for six weeks then has Christmas off so he is not due back until January 3rd.🤷‍♀️

I think it's perfectly reasonable to ask on a forum like this for people's experience of a drug like this which can be bought over the counter, though also often prescribed.

From my knowledge, it is sometimes used long term but more recent studies have shown that long term use of ppi's such as omeprazole can increase risk of osteoporosis as well as other negative effects.

My own experience was that after telling my GP about my acid reflux, I was referred for a gastroscopy which showed a hiatus hernia. I was prescribed Lanzoprazole which initially seemed like a miracle drug! However, after a few weeks I developed increasingly worse diarrhea. At first I didn't connect it with drug but eventually decided to Google side effects and diarrhea was mentioned. Almost as soon as I stopped taking it, the diarrhea stopped. I then reverted to my previous practice of ranitidine (similar to famotidine) and Rennies! At next visit to GP I explained my experience and he was happy for me to continue this regime. I occasionally take omeprazole or similar for a day or two if I've been getting a lot of reflux.

There's nothing wrong with Googling side effects of medications, as long as you stick to reputable sites like NHS. Also it's important to understand why you're on particular medications and whether stopping may be dangerous. I'm on thyroxine because I had thyroid removed and also an anti-coagulant and Beta-blocker for heart condition. I know I will have to continue taking these, but for many people with acid reflux, it's a different situation.

From your response below l gathered you had googled

I have just googled the NHS on Omeprazole as I have been on it for a long time. Suggested because I take aspirin daily. As I have experienced some funny turns over the last few months. Also indigestion has returned. I Have had an ecg. The nurse said some things were “off” and went to see the doctor. Came back and said she wasn’t overly concerned as the ECG was being analysed. Have looked at the test results on NHS app and there is no comment. Also looking at the possibility of weakening bones and low magnesium again on thenNHS site, I have decided to try to get an appointment next week and meanwhile I have decided to come off them by reducing them to alternate days over next two weeks etc. I always have a big bowl of oats topped with Greek yoghurt and Kafir followed by aspirin and bp tablets. I have ordered some magnesium citrate [chronic insomnia for years] in the hope of raising the level and changing my aspirin to the coated kind. So Gransnet you have alerted me. So thank you.

Someone very close to me started with a cough. Omeprazole bought over the counter for acid reflux. Suppressed the symptoms. Then got it on repeat prescription. Stayed on it too long without asking for a camera down to check whether it was indeed the hiatus hernia that the nurse assumed it was.

Severe anaemia came next. Rabbit holes were descended. Vit B12 injections. Weight loss followed. 12 months later a gastroscopy showed it never was an hiatus hernia but cancer. By then, it was inoperable and incurable. Devastating news indeed.

I don’t wish to spook anyone but please learn by this. Check out it really is acid reflux/hiatus hernia? Ask for a barium swallow. Do not just assume.

Good post urmstongran.

Thank you …

There are warnings on over the counter remedies for acid reflux that they shouldn't be taken for more than 2 weeks without seeking medical advice. Anyone who has chronic acid reflux or other type of indigestion should be referred for a gastroscopy to rule out cancer.

Marydoll Fri 27-Oct-23 22:16:45

I was referred for a gastroscopy after needing prescribed Omneprozole on a regular basis for chronic acid reflux.
I did indeed have a hiatus hernia and some polyps were also discovered in my stomach.
Biopsies were taken at the same time, but fortunately they were not cancerous.
A year is far too long to wait for intervention.

Jaxjacky Fri 27-Oct-23 22:21:15

I too had a gastroscophy, after taking Nexium for a short while OTC (bad for me as it has Omeprazole in it).
Hiatus hernia diagnosed, the majority have one, only a few have reflux from it.
