Having had bad acid reflux my doctor put me on this about 12 months ago. I have just been to same day Doctor because I had symptoms of nausea, sweating and increased heart rate, but he did an ECG and did my vital signs and apparently I’m okay, but he did say I should increase the omeprazole from one a day to two a day because he thinks it will help with the nausea, but I am reluctant to do this as have heard some not so positive things about this drug,So any experience shared will help.
Thanks in anticipation ..

Quiet often people are prescribed without having a proper investigation.
It’s quite possible that many people aren’t producing enough acid so the stomach is over compensating.

I suffer from reflux due to another medication I take and I sympathise with you , it's horrible! I have been given different PPI to help and they definitely work but my gp is very firm to only take them when absolutely needed due to side effects. The trusty Double Gaviscon is my go to most of the time.

My husband was prescribed Lansoprazole many years back when he was taking Clopidogrel. Lansoprazole gave him extreme bloating and diarrhoea within days. He was changed to Ranitidine which was absolutely fine for him for several years. In 2019 it was taken off the market due to carcinogenic fears.

He has since been prescribed Lansoprazole again...no thank you. Famotidine he didnt like and is now on prescription Gaviscon which is fine. He doesn't have reflux and never has, it has always been because of the Clopidogrel. These PPIs seem like magic but are not for everyone and not long term.

I did stop taking omeprazole and have Gaviscon tablets at the ready, but so far, have not had to even have one, in four days, I have had no acid reflux!

People should not advice anyone to go against their doctors advice. If you are not sure go back to GP . I have been on it for years with no side effects and would only stop on my GP's advice .

My repeat prescription says ‘to be taken all the time while on aspirin’. My blood tests have shown I am low in sodium but no one suggested this could be related to Omeprazole. So glad this post has highlighted the side effects as I have been using it for a long time. I am coming off it.

I have been on Omeprazole 20mg daily for 3 months for acid reflux and it does help a lot and no side effects. My GP said it is safe to take long term.
My GP referred me for an endoscopy to aid diagnosis but the hospital refused it and said I had to take Omeprazole 40mg daily for one month before they accept a referral. I had a migraine for 10 days at the higher dose. I did an e-consult (the only way to contact a GP without a 3 week wait) and was advised to return to the 20mg dose. The GP has now referred me to see a gastro consultant.
I am happy to continue on the Omeprazole but would like to know if I have a hiatus hernia or any other reason for the acid reflux.
I am not happy with the hospital's view that if a high dose of medication masks the symptoms, there is no reason to investigate the cause, which could be something serious.

I was advised to take Omeprazole because of taking a 75mg aspirin daily. But I think there is far less likelihood of stomach problems with the aspirin if you have the “enteric coated” ones. I have chosen not to take the Omeprazole currently.
