Latest virus...be cautious when out and about!

Last week I was visiting my DD and family; the little one came home from school feeling tired and was warm. Poor little fellow developed a high fever which stayed for two days, but quickly recovered in time for Halloween. Then DD fell ill and spent two days in bed. She was so upset to be ill when I was visiting, but I assured her I was glad to be of help, and was on had for soup making and cold cloth dispatch.

I came home with fingers crossed, but developed the same. DD had tested both herself and son, but were negative for covid, so I didn't bother to test myself.

My goodness, I was laid out for 3 days, High fever and tired, with achy kidneys and a bit of a heat rash on my back. Not so much nasal, but I developed a cough, but not bad. I took extra time off work plus had the weekend to recover. I did return to work Monday, but am wearing a mask to prevent spread, although I'm not sure how long I am contagious.

Luckily my DH was away at the same time, but back now. We are able to stay separate in the house for a few more days.

Be careful when you are out, and perhaps get masks handy if you are in close company of others. I have not yet had my yearly flu shot, so perhaps this was it. I realize that we may not have the same viruses going around here as in UK, but it is flu season, and Covid is still making rounds.

Oh dear ... thank you for this information. I really do think we should all wear masks in crowded spaces, shops and on public transport. Why not? The Chinese have always worn them and it makes total sense. I also use Vicks First Defence. Just put a little bit inside the nose - I really do think it works and is inexpensive.

Was it flu? The real flu, not just a heavy cold. I’ve only had it once but will never forget it.

There is loads of flu, colds and Covid around my town, best to build up your immunity I don’t think masks really work that well the Chinese wear masks nearly all the time when out and look how badly they were hit with Covid.
You rarely see anyone wearing them here I think if you have germs cough etc and are having to go into public places it’s curtesy to do so
Just had my Covid and flu jabs for the winter and had Covid for the second time a month or so ago so fingers crossed I ll be ok for a while
Hope you feel better soon Canadagran

I saw two checkout people at the supermarket wearing masks today.

Viruses - I know two people who both started off with a tickly cough. After about 10 days, one is still struggling with a bad cold. The other one has just started her second lot of antibiotics for a chest infection.

Another person was hospitalised overnight. Likely a virus. Has been on a drip.
The nurse said that in that area, there are lots of things going around.

Time of year I guess?

We both have covid, been ill for few days but only tested positive today Its very unpleasant and we dont know where we could have caught it .
the last time I had it it lingered for hoping it passes soon

I think the tricky bit, at least for this virus anyway, is the initial lack of symptoms. My little grandson had a fever, and was lethargic, and developed no other signs.

My DD had chills, fever and headache, didn't get a cough until about day 3. I was the same, plus sore kidneys and a rash.

I still insist masks are the best first defense, along with handwashing.

So it's not like you can just avoid the coughing person at the shops; there were no tell tale signs before it struck.

I tested positive a month ago and still feel rough, fortunately my husband has had every booster he could take but I wasn't able to get one when I wanted to, six week ago. I think he has had Covid too but is just sniffly, not ill.
I'm going to wear a mask on the bus from now on, but I think I caught the current varient from my school-aged grandchildren. No way of avoiding that really.

I have literally just done a covid test and it’s negative.

Started a cold last Monday, very runny nose, dry cough and aching neck and shoulders. Now I have a tight chest and feel lifeless.

My friend still works in a large secondary school. She felt ill Friday lunchtime which developed to temperature and headache by home time. Testing negative for covid currently. A group of us were due to have a meet up with ex colleagues and go for a pizza but weve moved date.

I've never worn a mask. I think they compromise your immunity

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 11-Nov-23 22:51:39

So you flouted the rules when masks were mandatory? And iirc didn’t get the vaccine?

Marydoll Sat 11-Nov-23 23:03:29

Your scientific evidence for that is?????

Deedaa Sat 11-Nov-23 23:09:54

Biscuitmuncher do you think all surgeons and dentists have compromised immune systems as they spend their working lives in masks? Have you got evidence or is this just "I think"?

GS1 was quite ill for a couple of days last week. Just stayed in bed with a headache and temperature.

I think all shops and public places should install air purifiers. Now that the weather is colder and doors are kept closed, toxins and viruses build up. It is just common sense, really.

Jennajim Sun 12-Nov-23 07:40:30

Also using sanatizer when out and about,,and hand washing when you get home.

That sounds like a good idea. Not that I know much about such things.

If I go into our supermarket at 10pm, the smell of body odour in the air is quite pungent.

fancythat Sun 12-Nov-23 08:17:28

I cut down on buying loose veg, and a loose individual cake.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 12-Nov-23 08:55:59

Germanshepherdsmum no I didn't get the vaccine, neither did my children
The best decision we ever made

M0nica Sun 12-Nov-23 08:56:52

Masks give little protection from infection unless they are full hospital grade masks.

Chinese and Japanese people wear masks to protect their lungs from air pollution, not infection, which is a different thing altogether, and there masks are effective protection.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 12-Nov-23 08:57:16

Deedaa do they wear them all the time or just when working

I don’t suppose you have flu jabs either?

Primrose53 Sun 12-Nov-23 09:26:47

I got the flu jab but not the covid one this time. I am not an anti vaxer just don’t want any more covid jabs.

Biscuitmuncher is a frequent anti vax, anti mask poster, who never offers any scientific evidence to prove her point.
I suspect she likes to wind up posters. 😔

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 12-Nov-23 10:45:49

I have had both flu and covid jabs. I can’t afford not to. The protection afforded by a covid jab wanes over time, hence boosters are needed - which are also geared to new variants.
