Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

My operated leg is the right one greenmossgiel. I think it probably does help that I put my 'good' leg in first. What you can't see in the photo is that my loo with its rail surround is right next to the bath, as is my wash basin, at the head end, so I have good solid things to hang on to. I use a rubber bath mat so that I can push against that with my good leg. I can't kneel and never have done since I had my first knee replacement seven years ago. A physiotherapist told me never to kneel, but I know that won't apply to everyone. It's such a personal journey!

I don't need my crutch around my home and patio now but again there are plenty of things to grab onto if I feel the need. Still using it outside though.

I’ve been looking at your feet and notice that your right one doesn’t appear to be at all swollen, which mine is, though not nearly as bad as it was. Is your leg still quite swollen? I could perhaps use DH’s ‘perching stool’ next to the bath and transfer onto that. I have a rubber bath mat.
Watch this space….or perhaps not 😳!

My foot was never swollen. I had the worst problems with my thigh, due to the tourniquet they apply during the op, but that's ok now. My knee is a little puffy but not much.

greenmossgiel Wed 31-Jul-24 08:35:14

Well, I’ve tried! Got in no problem, but when I tried to lower myself into the water, I just couldn’t bend my knee enough, even though I do have a 90 degree bend. I didn’t want to push my luck so I soaped myself down and rinsed off using the shower attachment. Knee is pretty swollen still, even at the back, so maybe I was being a bit too hopeful. Will keep trying!

I tried a few times before I managed it!

greenmossgiel just catching up on this thread and screamed when I saw you were planning a bath! I was just going to post about waiting till you definitely had someone around to help you get out when I saw your last post! Phew. Getting in is one thing it's the getting out that's the problem.
It is nice to feel clean and fresh in this weather though. Any chance of a shower?

Aveline Wed 31-Jul-24 09:23:41

If you knee is still swollen you maybe need to increase the ice and get that leg up. It needs to be quite high in order to facilitate drainage. Also don't overdo things. Lecture over wink

Aveline, I’ve discovered this morning that I can get in and out of the bath no problem, but can’t bend knee to lower into water. We don’t have a very useful shower, but I used the shower head to rinse off.
I shall take it on board re increasing the ice and elevation. ☺️

I am aware this is a bit extreme and not comfortable But I lie on my bed with my legs up the wall. A good job I live on my own or I would be sectioned.

You and me both! It really helps. 😁

Aveline Wed 31-Jul-24 19:49:18

I've done that before now. The cat was very concerned!

After my hip replacement operation it took several months for the swelling in my legs to go down. I sit with my feet up whenever possible and try to keep my fluid intake up. I haven’t been able to get in or out of the bath for some years, so had the bath taken out and a walk in shower installed. It has grab handles and a seat at one end, should I need it.

Getting legs higher than the heart is the goal, easier said than done so legs up the wall sounds as good a way as any.

How do I put on aeroplane flight socks please, when I can’t put on ordinary socks without my sock putter-onner!
The ones I have are a few years old and were a job to get on before knee and hip ops. Maybe there are some more recent ones easier to put on.

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 09:57:52

In emergency, put your toes in a shiny plastic bag then fit the stocking over that. This helps them to slide on before you pull them up. However, you are better to use a sock putter onner with tapes to pull them up with.

My SisIL used to call this 'The 10 minute Hollywood Slant'.
She used to do it after working all day if she was going out in the evening!

I've had a change of blood pressure tablets and my legs and ankles have gone down. They were swollen and making it difficult to do the exercises.

Callistemon213 Tue 06-Aug-24 10:44:37

It's supposed to refresh all the cells in your body 😃

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 11:59:37

My Granny had the bottom legs of her bed raised up on tree stumps so she could always sleep with her legs up.

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 12:00:07

Did you do that drawing btw Callistemon?

NotSpaghetti Tue 06-Aug-24 13:26:23

Aveline, my lovely midwife told me to sleep with the bottom of the bed raised (just an bit will do) to benefit feet and ankles. She suggested wooden blocks.

No Aveline, it was online.
I had to drop Art GCE 😃
Although I did pass an NVQ in Art after I retired.

Aveline Tue 06-Aug-24 18:03:35

Keep at it Callistemon!
