Amlodipine?

I’ve recently been diagnosed with sinus tachycardia after a 48 hour heart monitor. 15% of this time was spent with a heart rate between 100-180bpm. I have a premature extra ventricular heart beat very often. I’ve been prescribed metoprolol which I’ve yet to collect. 2 years ago I was prescribed Amlodopine 5mg. I’ve just read that this can cause tachycardia. I’ve no idea what to do now.

I'm a GP who has also taken Amlodipine for high BP .
It gave me intolerably swollen ankles.
So ,so uncomfortable.
I insisted it was changed.
I think your tendon problem could be caused by fluid collection in your tendons.
Insist it's changed, however well it's controlled your BP.

Aveline I changed my blood pressure tablets 3 times til I found one that agreed with me without side effects I take Losartan now

I used to be on Amlodipine and Ramipril. Been on Ramipril for a long time and was put on Amlodipine in 2017. I was found to have a hole in my heart in 2020 and due to missed heart beats and heart racing under the care of AF clinic and the first thing they did was take me off the Amlodipine as I had swollen ankles since I was put on it. The nurse said I should never have been put on it without seeing a cardiologist . Saw my first cardiologist in 2020 and only because I moved house and my new GP wasn't happy with my blood test results. My old GP never bothered to send me to see one . I have PAF so take Apixaban and Flecainide. Been find on both no side effects. Just have to be very careful not to cut myself and I bruise easier.

Interesting thread, I used to be on Rampril do not remember any problems.

But was then changed to Amlodipine seemed ok at first (sometimes you just don't notice side effects you just think ohh I've got achy legs etc etc . Not sure how long I have been on these now over a year maybe. But my legs, both of them have developed bad pains, very bad pains. I did go to docs (new doc she said it was deferred hip pain) and did I want Co codolmol or Naproxen ??

Also not sure if coincidence, but my legs around my ankles every so often develop this awful rash like almost looks like blood poisoning if you will. (also showed the doc photo) she barely looked at them, wasn't interested.

I am due for review on Friday with the nurse, so watch this space,

Amlodipine is one of the cheaper drugs to treat high blood pressure. My partner has cardio vascular disease and Angina, and was recently taken off Amlodipine. The consultant advised that the drug has one of the highest instances of side effects and there’s reason to believe it may cause worsening of angina or heart attack in certain patients with severe heart or blood vessel disease. He was prescribed Ramipril instead.

That’s interesting Pammie. I’ve taken Amlodipine for ten years without any real problems, except slightly swollen feet when I first started, but it settled down and my feet are normal unless I walk a very long way (I recently walked over 20,000 steps one day, and my feet swelled then) but my mother had heart disease for many years and she was on Ramipril for her blood pressure. I didn’t know that Amlodipine was not advised for people with heart disease and so it’s useful information just in case.

I took this, when I got up in the morning my legs and feet were ok within an hour my legs and feet were swollen. The GP changed me to Ramipril and I had no problems with that

Another side effect of Amlodipine is swollen enlarged gums. As a hygienist I’ve asked patients to go back to their gp to change their meds . Some gps are accommodating, some aren’t .
Amlodipine and Ramipril are the two cheapest bp meds , which gps roll out first .
Another point is that swollen feet and ankles can be due to fluid around the heart . My mum had this and was given a diuretic to reduce the fluid . So get your gp to do a thorough check up ,

It's so unfair. DH is on all sorts of medication and never has any side effects. We ladies must all be such delicate flowers!

Yes swollen ankles! All BP meds have side effects unfortunately!

Ramipril made me cough all the time ( common side effect ) so put on indipamide caused very low sodium levels - Amlodipine extremely swollen feet and ankles , very itchy and GP son worried I may get ulcers as type 2 diabetic - finally Losartan and bingo ok . My neighbour also had to try 4 high blood pressure tabs before one suited her too . I have a feeling we are given the cheapest first ( checked the cost per tablet ).

I sympathise with you on this. My feet, esp my left foot always seemed to hurt, esp the soles of my feet, then someone gave me some FitFlops. I've never looked back and wouldn't buy anything else. They last years and you can buy them somewhat cheaper on EBay or elsewhere (i havent tried there yet)

At 75 yrs when I was prescribed Amylodipine I advised to take it at night and also to wear a medium / light below knee support stockings with Zips which I got from Amazon and find very comfortable.
I keep them on for 3 days as suggested on the instructions.
I have not experienced any side effects such as swollen feet and ankles.

I take it at breakfast too callistamon perhaps have to change it round

I already have always taken it at night. Didn't help me. Just hoping the new combination works and doesn't have unbearable side effects.

I just spoke to v nice GP. She's changing my prescription to 5mg Amlodipine and adding in Lisinopril. She said that the two work together well. Time will tell I suppose.
Anyone else on this combination?

Romola no I ve never needed to use creams I have pretty good skin for my age and it was weird how it only effects my shins no other part of me

My Mum had several BP tablets, two of which caused severely swollen ankles. It took several visits with me to GP then a consultants advice to get GP to change meds and voila swelling gone.

I had to change my several times, I’m now on a combination of Medication(R) Indapamide 1.5mg modified-release tablets - 60 tablet - take one each morning
Medication(R) Lercanidipine 10mg tablets - 56 tablet - take one daily
Medication(R) Lisinopril 10mg tablets - 56 tablet - take one daily, no swelling or noticeable side effects at all.

Please do go back if your BP meds have any side effects, there’s so many to choose from.

My husband has high BP and been on a variety of meds for years. He takes hydralazine 200mg, lisinopril (I forget, 2 small pills), metoprolol 75 mg. He was taking amlodipine 10mg, but had swelling in his feet, Dr. took him off and it took about 4-5 months before I noticed his feet had gone back to normal. He had a bout with higher than normal BP a month ago, had been through a lot of stress and thought that might have been the cause--it was up to low-200s over low-100s. Put him on a diuretic specifically for fluid on/around the heart. His BP is back to normal now. We're in the US, have our Medicare plan for over 65s, don't really know the original prices of these meds. Good luck with your meds/Drs.

Bluebelle do you moisturise your shins and ankles already? I think itchy shins might be just old skin not getting enough from the thin underlying layer.
I put on Avena every morning to stop itchiness.
(And BTW I've been on 10mg Amlodipine for nearly two years with no problems. )

Admit I haven't read every post so apologies if I'm repeating what has already been said.
I've had high BP for years, and found that any drug with its name ending in dopine made my ankles and feet swell. I had to be very firm when I said that I really did not want any more of these drugs as they were causing major problems with finding comfortable wide shoes that I could walk in.
I've been on Lisinopril ( plus others) for a long time now, and it seems to work OK.

Meant to ask has anyone experienced GN's type (font) has gone smaller?
