Amlodipine?

I just started an increased dosage of this and suddenly have awful tendonitis in my right foot. I'm pretty crippled by it. Nothing else has changed to account for this sudden painful condition.
Is it just me? Will it go away? I will contact the GP on Monday.

Amlodipine can cause swollen ankles but unlikely to be responsible for tendinitis in one foot

I have recently started Amlodipine (9 months ago) and it has caused awful swelling in my hands and feet. I bruised my finger at Christmas taking off my eternity ring I now cannot wear it.
My feet get so painful when walking.
I told my GP and was told put up with it, it’s reducing your blood pressure.

There are other drugs available summer and so since you’ve been on Amlodipine for nine months, I think you’re entitled to ask to try a different drug. Insist!
Amlodipine is the cheapest blood pressure medication as I understand it.

BlueBelle Sun 21-Jan-24 11:37:09

Asmaddy says there are other drugs Make an appointment with a different GP this one doesn’t sound very accommodating and arrogant you shouldn’t be worse off on a drug
I take it with no noticeable problems but if there was I d definitely ‘have a word’

I have painful feet anyway but I'm sure they have got worse since I've been on Amlodipine, along with swollen ankles and itchy shins.

Amlodipine is the cheapest blood pressure medication as I understand it.
That must be why the GP keeps saying "Persevere with them" after two years!

My GP was more than happy to change my Amlodipine when she saw the state of my ankles and feet. You need to see him/her on Monday as you had planned.

That's absolutely dreadful of your GP to say that.
I am slowly working my way through all available BP drugs, cannot find one that doesn't give me horrible side effects, my GP has (so far) been really helpful.

My tendonitis started when I was on 5ml dose but receded. However, it flared up very badly almost as soon as I started in the 10ml version. There is research linking Achilles tendonitis to Amlodipine. It's odd that it's only one foot but it's my club foot one so not straightforward. Just looking at it theres a big increase in blood
vessels to the area.
It's really affecting me badly. I can only walk very slowly and it really hurts.

Oh callistomon you’ve made me think I have awful itchy shins …why ? Is that a side effect I never in a million years would have thought of that but I have only taken Amlodipine about 9 months and the itchy shins have been on and off about 6 months

1summer Sun 21-Jan-24 12:22:47

Thank you all for your advice, I didn’t realise Amlodipine was a cheaper option. I will definitely get an appointment and ask for an alternative.
I also have itchy feet, especially when they are swollen.

I don't know, but thought it could be connected with swollen ankles and found DH's Epimax cream helped.

The GP who put me on them has left now so I'll try again to speak to someone else.

Good.
Don't be palmed off with Felodipine - they are same 'family' of medication

BlueBelle Sun 21-Jan-24 12:40:31

I don’t have swollen ankles though Callistemon

crazyH Sun 21-Jan-24 12:43:09

The Doctor started me on Amlodipine 10mg daily, but it cause swelling of the ankles and feet. She lowered it to 5mg and I’m fine.

BlueBelle Sun 21-Jan-24 13:05:24

I m only on 5mg

Callistemon21 Sun 21-Jan-24 13:38:29

Me too, plus another one which is supposedly a diuretic too.

As others have said other choices.
I'm now on Ibasartan. Apprently recommend by my local hospitals Renal team. Swelling gone within 24hrs.
My chum had the same issue, GP switched her to good old standby Ramipril no swelling and so far, no Ramipril cough.
See another GP.

I take Amlodipine - the practice nurse advised me to take it at night as it can cause swelling in the feet/ankles - I sit at a desk all day and I just assumed the swelling was due to this. I changed the timing to evening and I dont have any swelling at the end of the day now.

Soniah Mon 22-Jan-24 11:44:46

I had my dose increased from a minimal amount and within 3 days my feet were really painful, my Dr and I both thought it must be the increase so I had to come off it for a month then go back on it again, sure enough no problem within a day or two of giving it up but it started again almost as soon as I resumed the increased dose. My GP was quite excited and filled in a special side effects for as it hadn't shown up in common or rare side effects. As she said there are plenty of alternatives.

Oh thanks Lisa, that is a good tip! Too late for today but will start that tomorrow and see how it goes.

Summer, find another Dr, there are lots of alternatives, my Dr and I proved it caused my painful feet and she dealt with it

Suzejp Mon 22-Jan-24 12:05:08

I was on amlodapine and gradually my feet swelled and my breathing and coughing got
Worse, I was on holiday at the time and started to struggle up the stairs. I read the side affects of the drug ad stopped taking them straight away
On return fro holiday went to the Dr ad he charged them straight away to a sow release tablet

leeds22 Mon 22-Jan-24 12:17:38

I was originally prescribed 5 mg Amlodipine but it caused swelling in my legs. My GP immediately changed my precription to Indapamide 2.5 mg which causes no side effects. GPs usually start you off on the cheapest drug but shouldn't keep you on it if it's causing side effects.

EmilyHarburn Mon 22-Jan-24 12:22:13

Aveline this is a dreadful side effect that is damaging your foot. do not put up with it. You must transfer to another medication.
