I visited my GP recently because my dentist said my mouth didn't open properly - more to the point he said it slipped to the left as I opened it - and he felt I had a problem with the right hand side of my jaw - hence the visit to my GP as the dentist said he couldn't diagnose me. I got completely floored when my GP asked me why it mattered I couldn't open my mouth properly. Not quite sure how I should have answered the question.

I have had problems with jaw lock for years and suggest you request a referral to a Maxillofacial specialist.

My daughter's best friend is in a wheelchair, can't use her legs at all. Someone caught the control on the chair and crashed her into a wall breaking her leg, A&E didn't see why she needed it fixed!!!

The pathway here is for the dentist to refer to the dental hospital for further assessment. Your area may be different.

When I was a teenager : I yawned and there was a loud cracking sound - pain ensued and didn't go away .
A consultant oral surgeon diagnosed temporal mandibular
dysfunction and prescribed pain killers .
The pain become far less , but it persisted .
Bruxism was suspected , but proved not to be the cause .
I have noticed that when I feel tense I clench my teeth .
It is very common and not something to worry about , but if you've had no sympathy from your GP then , perhaps your local dental hospital can help .
Good luck with this unpleasant problem .

It sounds like a problem with the cartilage at the joint between your lower jaw and skull (by your ear). That usually results from tooth wear and is a dental problem.

Good luck!
