Cutting toe nails

I know I'm not alone in finding it difficult to cut my toe nails.
I'm 85 with an arthritis which affects most of my joints including my spine and hands. I recently had a fall and fractured a vertebra which has not helped.

Ideally I would like to find a chiropodist or podiatrist who would undertake this chore for me but I have failed to find anyone who will do this. I have asked friends and tried yellow pages, AgeUK gave me a list of 3, but when I contacted them they all said they did not cut nails! (why?).
My GP cannot help.
I have some pretty hefty clippers from Amazon called "Dr Móde" and they are very sharp. Unfortunately I've nicked my toes a few times and made them bleed which doesn't seem the best way to go.
My diabetic husband sees someone at the hospital and they keep his nails short for him. She doesn't do this privately.
Can I buy some decent tools - preferable scissors, not clippers so I can keep my feet comfy?
Any hints and suggestions considered seriously.

I book every 6 weeks with a podiatrist. I come away with clipped and filed nails. Hard skin removed and creamed feet. That is all she does, so I’m not sure why those podiatrists you have contacted say that they don’t cut nails.

If cutting your toe nails really is that much of a struggle I would persevere with finding a Chiropodist/Podiatrist.
I was going say try Age UK, but you already have.
What about a local salon, for a pedicure and they will cut your toe nails as well?
Maybe ask on Facebook?

I have had to revert to having a podiatrist come to my home. The main problem is my toe nails. She charges £35 per visit, it takes about 1.1/4 hours. She soaks my feet in Lavender oils and warm water, cuts my nails and does a few other little things she finds, and afterwards massages my feet with foot cream. This is done every 8 weeks. If I was you I would just ask for a podiatrist to visit your home and not mention just nail cutting because as far as I can see nail cutting only would not be much cheaper than a full pedicure and you don't even have to go out to have them done. Worth every penny.

I agree with others about a pedicure option, whether from a podiatrist or at a salon. I don’t wear makeup or bother with beauty treatments but my one indulgence is year round pedicures every 5 to 6 weeks. In summer I have the full works; nail polish on my toes but in winter I just have the pampering treatment; foot soak, massage, nails cut and cuticles neatened followed by another massage with a rich cream. The cost is £20 without polish. Our feet work hard, and as we get older they have done so for a long time, I think they deserve this.

I have been thinking of going on the whole my feet are good and my nails perfectly cuttable BUT I have one, just one toe nail that has thickened and is getting to be a nightmare to cut My friend goes to a lady and comes out dancing on air ….well nearly

I have trouble cutting my toe nails. Haven't always got the strength to use my toe nail clippers . I have a Schol battery operated hard skin remover and use it to file down my toe nails works a treat and you can't pressed to hard as it cuts the machine off. Been using one since 2017 my feet have never been in such good condition. Corns are filed down with it . I do them every 2 weeks. Then rub cream into them .

I am booking an appointment for a pedicure soon as due to surgery I haven't been able to cut my toe nails either!

Diabetics are entitled to free foot care.

I agree our feet deserve a proper pamper from time to time!

Even if you are in hospital only chiropodists or podiatrists will do this. So many times patients ask nursing staff to do it but it’s a no-no. It’s so easy to cause harm to to toes and feet in people with underlying issues b6 doing this.

My feet are not pretty! I am of an age that wore winkle-pickers in the 50/60s and my toes are bent and nails deformed. I have not the nerve to ask a podiatrist look at them. I also have poor eyesight so cannot use clippers fir fear of cutting my toes off. I use a heavy duty foot file with emery paper and with great effort file them down but it takes for ever and my back does not like it. Whiff I will try the battery opersted Scholl one. Thanks for the tip

I walked to a foot care lady, she cut my nails, did a small amount of scalpel work and put some oil on. Cost me £33 and too 20 minutes. Not worth it for me so now I do my own with really good special nail cutters, they are not really scissors nor clippers. From amazon. Thy were from bigwinner in 2017 and cost just £11. There were called heavy duty nail clippers and toenail lifter for thick and ingrown toenail. Not for sale now but something similar must be available. Easy to use if you can reach your toes

My advice would be to look via facebook too, there have been a couple of requests on my local fb and they got responses. Perhaps ask for foot care rather than just say to cut nails

I pay £35 to have my toenails cut by a visiting podiatrist every 6 weeks - that is all she does and it is over and done with pretty quickly. But she comes to me and I live very rurally so I accept that this will increase the cost. I have no choice really - cannot bend far enough to do my nails, so it has to be done by someone else.

We both go to a local Podiatrist - we pay around £35 and were recommended to go every 6 weeks. The Podiatrist removes any hardened skin, examines our feet (OH is type 2 diabetic), cuts the toe nails, and then applies foot cream. Small price to pay for professional treatment. And there are loads of these Podiatrists around - just have to Google the local area.

Age uk in your area may have info on a nail cutting service.

I'm so out of date though, that a lot of these services stopped ages ago.

I can never understand why people go to a podiatrist or chiropodist if they only want their nails cut, unless they have an underlying medical condition or toenails that are very thick.
It’s usually cheaper and more pleasurable to go to a salon and have a pedicure.
They do vary of course but generally include soaking the feet, exfoliation, filing hard skin, cutting and filing nails with a nice massage and polish if required. Some just do a cut & file if that’s all that is required.
There are many therapist that offer a home visiting service.

Are diabetics entitled to free foot care including nail cutting? I thought it was just the foot examination every year. I had a look on Diabetes UK and can only see the check up being free.

Calendargirl Sun 28-Apr-24 12:14:37

You all mention podiatrists coming to your home. Are you sure they are not Foot Health Specialists or similar?

Probably done an online training course, perfectly acceptable for nail cutting, corn removal and similar, but certainly not done the full training to be a podiatrist/chiropodist.

And hopefully cheaper.

MissAdventure Sun 28-Apr-24 12:14:49

My neighbour gets her nails and hard skin done around every six weeks, free, because she is diabetic.

Delia22 Sun 28-Apr-24 12:28:02

I also visit a podiatrist every 6-8 weeks! All he does is cut my nails deal with hard skin and moisturise! I would do it myself but my large toe nails are quite thick which makes it difficult. I was doing it myself until two years ago but I ended up "tearing"them so they would be uneven and sharp! I don't have problem feet as such but it's easier to have nails done.He also charges £35 so I might consider a pedicure if they offer more.

Georgesgran Sun 28-Apr-24 12:38:03

I go to a qualified local Podiatrist every 5/6 weeks and pay £33 for a half hour appointment. I don’t begrudge a penny of it - hard skin removed, the odd (very) corn taken out, my nails cut and smoothed and my feet creamed.
She’s given me good advice about footwear and pointed out that my knee trouble was probably caused by having unstable ankles!
Although I have regular manicures and gel polished fingernails, I prefer a professionally qualified Podiatrist to see to my feet, even though I’m capable of doing it myself, because ‘I’m worth it!’

Ilovecheese Sun 28-Apr-24 12:39:57

My beauty place does pedicures which include cutting toenails. They say they would rather clients left it to them, as they know how to cut them neatly. Mine charges £35 for a lovely pedicure with trimmed and painted toenails, exfoliation, massage and lotion. Have to tried local beauty parlours?

Witzend Sun 28-Apr-24 12:54:20

PamelaJI, it’s only pleasurable if you’re happy for people to touch your feet!
I hate anyone touching mine, so I give myself pedicures at home - in fact I’ve done one this morning - TBH it was overdue.
My big toenails are tough, but I always soak my feet in very warm soapy water before attacking them, and then they’re manageable.

BTW Boots now do a pack of emery boards with 2 types - standard and ‘highly abrasive’, which may well be good for difficult toenails, not that I’ve tried them for that yet.

Charleygirl5 Sun 28-Apr-24 13:04:46

I am partially visually impaired so cannot see my toenails. I go to a podiatrist, £40, 10 minutes and I am out the door.

Baggs Sun 28-Apr-24 13:28:45

Gosh! This thread is horrific! I don't have any hard skin on my feet. The thought of a pedicure (or manicure for that matter) horrifies me. And as for "scalpel work"..... OMG!

Not looking forward to a time when I might need help with hands and feet 😱

PamelaJ1 Sun 28-Apr-24 14:49:26

Witzend😂 can’t get over that problem but most people enjoy a pedicure!
