How much extra liquid are you drinking in this hot weather?

As we all know in weather like we have at the moment we must drink more. How successful are you at doing this?

I usually have a drink around emaltime and inbetween meals, but now a glass stands on the drainer waiting to be filled and drained at regular intervals.

As well as my usual drinks, I had a glass of water, even before my morning coffee. I was out deliviring leaflets for an hour in the early morning and had 2 glasses on my return. After doing the weekly shop, when I got home I did the same again.

We are driving to DD's this evening and I will top up when I get there - and not drink anything alcoholic.

So 7 or 8 extra glasses of water today and as I am not going to the loo any more than usual, they are clearly needed to keep me properly hydrated.

Where I am in Scotland it hasn't been very hot. I live in hope.
We should all drink more water though.

Not enough, that’s for sure….

It's not hot here. I drink water before and after all dog walks, with all meals, and before coffee -- enough is enough, in my opinion.

None.

….Well winterwhite I have discovered that there is “part” of the brain that lets us know when to drink, but it seems less responsive in older age.
I was always a drinker ( usually copious cuppas) rather than an eater.
Now things have reversed and I find I can go hours without feeling desperate even in this weather but look forward to dinner 🍽️ more.
Isn’t the body strange?

I know I don’t drink enough - 2 or 3 half pint mugs of decaf coffee over a day and a glass of water at lunch time. Never remember to drink more and never feel thirsty. What triggers thirst I wonder.

Im drinking extra water but I begrudge it as I have to keep going for a wee, which is a waste of time. I find Im waking up several times in the night to have a drink and then having to go for a wee .....

I do try to drink more when it's hot, as it is today for instance. Lots of orange squash even though it makes my throat feel funny. And plenty of water.
I do try, but sometimes fail...

Ooh! BigMamma are these easily available at pharmacies?

I think they are sold as Dioralyte? I don't know the salt content of that, but I would check before using, as they aren't meant to be taken regularly if you aren't losing salts through illness.

Georgesgran Wed 26-Jun-24 23:09:25

Available in most pharmacies, supermarkets and all over the internet Granmardeby10.
Like this ….

I used to put Berroca in drinking water, but it has so much salt in it that I stopped. I can't remember how much there is in one table, but it was frightening.

I add flavoured electrolyte sachets to my drinking water as they contain essential minerals which we wash away when drinking lots of water and perspiring a lot. I used to wonder why I felt so lethargic in hot weather then saw a programme on TV about electrolytes so started to add them and now I never feel washed out at all during the hot weather.

Many people use them after they have had a sickness and tummy bug but I find them fantastic for the hot weather.

What hot weather? Not here in N I.

I don’t drink much - no cold drinks at all*, but perhaps 4 cups of tea a day. I might make 6, but often leave half a cup.
I know it’s not enough, but a lot of liquid makes me feel sick.

*other than an occasional glass of wine.

HowVeryDareYou2 Wed 26-Jun-24 20:58:30

I drink quite a lot anyway, but today I've had 4 coffees and about 4 pints of water so far

Doodledog Wed 26-Jun-24 20:47:36

Nowhere near enough. I am aware that I don't hydrate as much as I should, but I'm hopeless at it.

I rarely drink alcohol, but tend to have an 'adult' soft drink in the evening, usually a bottle of non-alcoholic wine, and get through most of it. Other than that, I have iced coffee in the morning, and that's about it unless a friend comes round and I join them in a drink - in my case either another chilled coffee or a cup of fruit tea.

It's nothing like enough, even when it's not a heatwave, I know.

I drink at least a litre of water a day all year round. I'm always thirsty and hate being too far away from a glass of water. I was the same as a child.

I used to attribute it to my father who was in the North African campaign during the war. He'd savour water as though it was champagne and tell me it was the finest drink on earth.

However, I think it's probably genetic. I have been checked for diabetes.

I'm keeping my insulated mug in the fridge with water and a slice of lime, then take it out, carry it with me around the house and mindlessly sip on it as I go.
It's surprising how quickly it empties!

Patsy70 Wed 26-Jun-24 20:34:09

I just drink when I’m thirsty, seems to work.

DamaskRose Wed 26-Jun-24 20:26:23

Thankyou for the nudge M0nica, I am drinking more, water/herbal tea/fresh fruit juice but still not enough I admit. Here in the north east of Scotland we are not having the hot weather most of England seems to be getting but still, I need to drink more!

Iam64 Wed 26-Jun-24 20:14:30

Yes I’m another with a pint glass sitting in the fridge or on a work top. I also drink a glass before my morning cuppa

tanith Wed 26-Jun-24 19:06:16

I tend to drink loads anyway but i suppose I'm filling my water bottle a bit more often.
