HVDY2 Thank you. I’ve been looking at the CQC ratings and various websites, but I was hoping for replies from people who have had personal experience of nursing homes.

Thanks for the suggestion. I couldn’t find that catagory when I posed the question before.

Do you know anyone in the area who may have ideas of where to start? Friends or neighbours or local church?
Don't forget that what suits one person won't suit another.

Otherwise could you call a local group of Age UK who used to have a "how to choose a home" page.

Or call the local Adult Social Care. They almost certainly won't suggest one but will maybe have pointers to look for given your relative's specific situation.

"Care and Carers" is under the main heading of FORUMS

Go on your local Facebook site and ask people to PM you with their experience of homes in the area.

CQC ratings are often out of date and do not rate staff kindness or how a home normally operates.

A "gym friend" inspects them and says to focus on how they are with the residents, not how they are with you or how the place looks.

She says some are very focused on pleasing their visitors and making the place look good but the best ones are more alert and responsive to the residents and will say to her 'I won't be a minute I'll be with you soon' - or will stop their chat with her to find someone a drink (or whatever).
She says to ask staff how long they've worked there and what the turnover is.

I hope you get some recommendations, but there is no substitute for going and visiting some with your relative. I hope it's not an urgent situation and you either find a suitable one or have time to go on a waiting list. If your relative is in hospital don't let them bully you to find somewhere quick. We found cost doesn't always reflect quality and likewise for CQC rating. Ones used predominantly by social services often charge a premium to self funders to help make up the shortfall and can be disproportionately expensive. A quality more popular one (likely to have a waiting list) isn't always more expensive. Larger purpose built (usually have smaller wings), can also be better than converted old houses especially if they haven't been converted well. Good luck.

It might be worthwhile to look on some of the job agency reviews, which will have been done by people who either work, or have worked in different homes.

I'm not sure, but it might be Reed Employment that has lots of reviews.

I would look on Glassdoor once you have narrowed it down a bit.
