I know it’s a perpetual problem with us ladies ,but I am at a loss at what to do, I am 72 with at least 3stone to lose , I have always battled with my weight but now it’s beyond a joke. After trying SW, WW replacement meal plans etc, and having little success I saw the doctor who told me my 20+ years on Prozac has wrecked my metabolism Which I feel is a bit odd , but I really need to lose this weight abd don’t know which way to turn next. I do walk a lot but that my only exercise as I have heart disease so cannot do frantic exercise

Maybe you need to think of this as your “job” for the next year. Start by being ruthless in the kitchen. Don’t have anything in your fridge or cupboards that you know is high calories. Make meal plans for the week ahead.

You say you walk a lot - how much is a lot? 3 miles, 5 miles? Can you go swimming? Use YouTube videos to keep moving at home.

In some areas your GP can refer you to your local gym. A regular slow loss is what you should aim for. A pound a week soon mounts up to a stone. Be strict with yourself though, it’s not easy.. I hope you’re successful as you will certainly feel the benefit.

I had success with SW a few years ago and have kept it off.
Do you have a friend you can slim with, it does help?

I lost weight and inches recently and it was because I had terrible indigestion and just wasn’t eating much. And also lost weight at the start of the pandemic because I was worried about running out of food and wasn’t snacking between meals. I’ve also stopped having endless cups of tea and coffee and often substitute them with hot water which is good for my tum and also fills me up. It’s surprising how many calories we take in without noticing what we’re eating and drinking.

You do not need to do frantic exercise. If you are walking that is as energetic as you need to be. If you want to add exercise, I suggest Tai Chi or exercise classes based on sitting in a chair. You can find those online or yourlocal Age Uk may organise them or can suggest where to find them.

Losing weight, boils down to eating less calories than you are using up each day - and that varies from person to person.

Try noting down everything you eat and drink for one normal day, weigh food if necessary and then work out how many calories you are consuming. This will give you a figure that maintains your present weight but is clearly too much.

Then reduce the amount you eat by, say, 300 calories a day. MayBee70 gives very good and sensible advice about how to do this

I've written two books on this subject after working with some of the world's obesity experts for a decade of research.

First of all, the human body is designed to fight weight loss Which is why, 98% of people put back any lost weight (and oftem more) despite what WW, JCraig and pharmaceutical companies tell you - and despite all you do to reduce food intake.
Look carefully at how they make you ashamed, blatant manipulation to make you hate your body and pay them more money. They do NOT have your best interests at heart, otherwise they'd do it for free grin

Fat shaming is now very much disapproved of in UK, even books are being chan1ged hmm

When we reduce our calories, first we lose water, then muscles and finally, fat. So initial weight loss is usually the first two.

We also alter the "set point" the level at which we can lose. So if, like me, you began at 1500 kl a day, lost a few kilos then hit a plateau (fat does not like to be lost! [smile), you reduce to 1200 - and so on.

The lowest calorie intake you get to is then your "set point" and unles you literally starve yourself (as I did 40 years ago) you won't lose 3 stone. It's that which wrecks your metabolism.

Why not aim for better health through increased nutrition ?There is no such thing as healthy food, it's how we use it which determines how healthy we are.
And keep up your walking but don't go mad with it. As long as you are active and eating well, you should feel happier knowing you are every single dieter in the world has the same problem.
And don't be fooled by the dramatic Before and After photographs, almost all eventually put back that lost weight whatever they did to keep it off.

Go to the following page, scroll down and read the short Abstract and you will see that decades ago, experts knew all this was true and tried to tell the public how harmful dieting can be.
Because the diet industry in USA alone is worth $30 billion annually, you know why they continue to lie.

And you may try to find a copy of "Largely Happy - changing your mind about your body" which may help you.
Kindest regards

You need to eat 3,500 less than your body needs per week to lose 1lb . But it's a marathon not a sprint to lose weight and a life style change . Took me decades to realise that . I have lost 7st over 5 years. From size 32 and over 19st to a size 16. Been battling to lose the last stone I want to loose last 3 years. No amount of exercise with tighten my decades of being obese . I am baggy and saggy but don't care I hide those bits. Sit fit is not a soft option for exercising as we use weights and resist bands. Stand up exercises and waking ones.

Try sitting in the middle of the chair and march using arms and legs for 10 mins and you will see what I mean .

Have a look at the pears thread on dieting and exercise forum.

I don't buy foods I have no control over . And because of disability my diet is the same all year round porridge for breakfast cooked in the microwave. Home made red lentils and veg soup I cook enough for 6 lunches and store in the fridge in large plastic box. Dinner is a stew usually but sometimes make lasagna or pasta bake. I don't eat meat but chicken,Quorn mince, chicken pieces and sausages. Use a lot of veg and pearl barley enough for 6 dinners portioned into oven proof dishes and in the fridge.

I make a low fat version of cheese sauce . Put 200ml of skimmed milk into pan with 30g p flour ,50g of mature cheddar I crumble it as can't use a grater . Don't need and spread as enough fat in the cheese to make the sauce. Put on heat whisking until thick may need extra milk . Enough to top a lasagne or mix into a pasta bake . Doesn't taste any different from sauce made with spread . Plus lowers the cals.

Ruthieck, Don’t be so hard on yourself. I wouldn't look on your problem with 3 stones, but eating healthily. You have heart disease look on their website and find a healthy eating plan or you could ring their adviser and explain your problem and see what they suggest. I have at least a stone to lose then I wouldn't be slim but i do comfort eat at night. Just start with the first step, nothing with sugar in passes your lips, get rid of biscuits or cake. Thats the main thing, no sugar, if you have it in tea, either stop adding or drink water. I wouldn't think of portion control on portions of healthy food until you are used to being without sugar. My weight is down to snacks and huge amounts of nuts. I don't like crisps but if I am around them I will eat the lot. Like you I have medical issues which stops me from a lot of what I used to do. From today I am stopping sugar again and snacks and will be walking two shorter walks instead of the one. I know I will never be a size 12 again but when I struggle to squeeze into every item of clothes I have its time for action, I get very depressed at times and reward myself with food.
Good luck, there's more like you than the very naturally slim people you see.

The hard facts: energy used must be higher than energy in and energy in can easily be too high with the occasional biscuit, cake etc

I am 76 and have been on a careful mission to lose some weight, have actually gone down another size in my clothes and underwear. Now medium from xl some years ago. The variety of food needs to remain high and of good quality, to provide the minerals and vitamins as we need to nourish our bodies

I do exercise several times a week and always it involves some aerobics so I come home a bit sweaty. When I walk it is half an hour and involves a hill, when I cycle it is an hour and again involves some hills. Walking as in ambling, which I see many people do, is not useful, apart from the psychological affect. OP you should consult your doctor wrt the intensity of exercise you can do

I stand and move around in my house as much as possible, climb the stairs etc. It all adds up

The main driver to weight loss and weight control is to restrict eating time. I eat at around 6.30 and have nothing after 4.30. My body got used to it and stopped the evening cravings

Good luck Ruthiek, it is a long road and by the way I never weigh myself as I have built muscle in my body, muscle weighs more than fat.

The waist to hip ratio is a far better gauge than bmi for women. 0.8 and under is a good ratio. Lots of weight might be in hips and legs and it is much safer there, hence the waist/hip ratio. Internal body organ fat is the problem and it is safer in the legs and hips

Have you tried the NHS Weight Loss app? I have found this very useful and successful for me. Having tried other methods perhaps this might help you too. Good luck 😀

I belong to SW, I am on the social team, have been a member for a few years, and at my target weight.

I find the people who feel the most supported and steadily lose weight, small amounts add up, are those who stay to group and ask for support, tips, and ideas from the rest of the group.

It is a very lively sociable session and a lovely way to make friends too.

Kaimoana2 Thank you so much I will take this on board

I'm on my pre -Christmas diet.
Invited out - it would be so nice to get into a new size 16 dress which doesn't fit .
Bought in the sales and it's a mistake - I can't return it .
It's really easy to pile on the pounds and so hard to get them off .

Here are my tips :
Keep a food and mood diary .
This will help you identify your problem .
I do a lot of what the hell eating .
I'll eat something , which is fattening and then for the rest of the day-it's never mind I'll diet tomorrow...
I do a lot of celebratory eating -what a great day I'll celebrate with these doughnuts .
And what a nightmare of a day I'll console myself with this giant bar of chocolate .

Eat regularly meals -don't skip you'll end up with a headache and a binge .
Don't starve yourself think breakfast, lunch and a early supper .
Think vegetable and salad rather than the main dish .
Think fruit and certainly between meals .
Try semi freezing yoghurt as desserts .
Drink a lot of water teas and coffees .
Careful with sweet sodas .
Eat before you go to the shops and avoid tempting cafes and fast food .
Take a snack and some water if needs be .

Borrow your neighbour's small manageable dog and walk it .
Neighbours , who are out at work all day are very grateful .
Put on your favourite dance music and move to it .
Vary the tunes .
Tamla Motown gets me moving .
Who cares if people see you - close the curtains if needs be .
Join a class for exercise - yoga really controls my appetite or hobbies , which are distracting .

My sympathies Ruthiek I managed to lose six stones with Slimming World last year, I can't believe I actually enjoyed it and found it easy - I have put three stones back on this year and I'm so disappointed and confused because I just can't get back in that mindset. I very much believe that half your diet is in your head and it you don't have the right motivation and attitude it won't work. It will come though, don't give up.

Visgir1 Wed 02-Oct-24 11:29:18

It's interesting the Psychology of loosing weight. I have a mate who gives up after a few weeks as the weight doesn't come off fast enough, she wants to loose 14 lbs in 2 or 3 weeks, so gives up.

SW and WW works but it's a long term goal. Give yourself smaller goals. Say.. 1 stone within 2 months or less. You need to eat, but the correct type of food. If you don't eat your body will go into " survival" mode and you will not loose any weight.

I go to SW, so many newish members, say they miss meals so can't understand why they don't lose any weight. If they increase the meals with the right food they all lose pounds.

If you really want this you need to stick to it for several months and see what happens, lots of good advise on here but if you want full support, I would recommend WW or SW.

ruthiek Wed 02-Oct-24 11:29:37

Elles for some reason SW just doesn’t work for me sadly , whether it’s mindset or the actual diet I don’t know but it just doesn’t do it

Elless Wed 02-Oct-24 12:10:29

I must admit Slimming World is an exact science, if you don't follow the rules it doesn't work eg rhubarb is free but if you cook it, it has syns. Apparently it's because cooked food is easier to digest and your body doesn't have to work as much to digest it as you would with with raw food.

If you use cornflour it mixes in easier. Also the stronger the cheese the less you need. Have made my cheese sauce like this for 50 years

Woollywoman Wed 02-Oct-24 12:38:56

Sympathy, Ruthiek… I have had digestive problems for a while, and recently decided part of the problem was that I was simply eating too much! By cutting down - but not denying myself food I like - I have managed to lose 4lbs over 4 months. I need to keep going as I am still overweight.

4lbs doesn’t sound a lot, but I feel so much better for it. I have a health condition so only do gentle exercise, btw.

SW didn’t work for me.

Good luck - you can do it, it’s just not going to happen overnight…

I’m actually down to my lowest weight for about 20 years. My weigh has always fluctuated by several stones and I ‘ve been on theneverendingdiet since I was 16! And this is with me not being able to walk much because of my bad knee. I’ve also been eating cake and crisps and some chocolate, things that throughout my life I’ve regarded as the enemy and either not ate them or binged on them. I know I need to keep my weight down if I have to have a TKR. Instead of regarding food as ‘ the enemy’ I’m trying to plan my meals by thinking of what I really fancy eating and looking forward to it. And I finish off my evening meal with two bits of KitKat ( something we started doing during the pandemic) because that says to my brain ‘ that’s it, eating is over for today’. I do sometimes have some fruit later on; I love M&S seedless grapes, so expensive but sweeter than any other I’ve bought. I then try to fast for as long as possible ( I’ve never been a breakfast eater anyway) and break my fast with some tea bread or banana bread. I’m making a point of doing a few exercises, toe touches, knee strengthening exercises every hour or so. And trying to avoid bread as much as possible. My relationship with food has always been a difficult one ever since I put on a lot of weight in my late teens and then did a crash diet to lose it which I think ruined my metabolism.

Lisaangel10 Wed 02-Oct-24 14:24:01

The majority of people who lose weight with SW put it all back on plus a bit more. I must know 50 people who this has happened to. All from various SW clubs I have been to over, maybe, 30 years.

loopyloo Wed 02-Oct-24 14:36:48

I think it really is a self worth and self assertive issue.
Really need to plan something that works for you not follow someone else's plan.
Also I find boredom is a big factor. So if one can get out somewhere for ages with a very light meal it helps.

ruthiek Wed 02-Oct-24 14:38:54

Has anyone had any luck with the latest ww, ? My doctor has now mentioned the injections but I am really not sure and a bit scared

Have you tried aqua aerobics, chair pilates or yoga.? I increased my exercise and found I lost weight without changing my eating habits too much.
Good luck x

I am signing up for aqua aerobics, bought some weights this morning and may investigate seated exercises.
