Diarrhea after walking dog [blush]

Good Morning all smile every morning when I get up feel fine (other than the usual aches and pains) I have a cup of tea, take dog for a 45 min walk.

When I get home within 10/15 mins I get severe stomach ache and then end up having several 10/12 bouts of severe urgent Diarrhea.

I'm thinking it could be IBS but Buscopan doesn't seem to help.

I've recently had lots of tests at doctors and everything comes back clear (so nothing sinister).

I also changed from cows to soy milk a few months back in case it was that

Any thoughts / advice please

Have you tried just having water of a morning instead of tea and see if the same thing happens after walking the dog. Just an idea . My mom had IBS and found she had to stop having coffee and fresh ,frozen or tinned fruit until it was cooked in sugar water to reduce the acidic effect . She found she couldn't any sort of cabbage, lettuce and another sort of leafy green as they made her IBS worse. She used fibregel not sure thats spelt correctly. It made her stools firmer .

Does sound like IBS, but I think a call to your surgery is your best course of action. Good luck.

There are a lot of people with norovirus at the moment.

I can’t do coffee first thing and take an Imodium every day ‘just in case’, as my IBS is so unpredictable.
Is it the exercise? Are you the same if you don’t walk the dog that way?

CocoPops Mon 11-Nov-24 20:33:58

If you think it is IBS you could try the FODMAP diet.

If it continues would go to your GP, have a friend I used to volunteer with who developed celiac disease late in life, have you tested for this?
Diarrhea is a major symptom. Thing is it is notoriously difficult to test for, so if you do go for a test don't stop eating foods with gluten in it or it could be missed.
It probs isn't this but the symptoms sound similar.

Could it be down to something you eat or drink before bed, the night before?

MayBee70 Mon 11-Nov-24 21:38:24

Might it have happened once for a particular reason and now your gut has got into a habit of doing it. I’m only thinking this because even if I’m absolutely fine, on the rare occasion that the phone rings after a minute or so I have to apologise to the person calling because I have to rush to the loo. This has been happening for years. It probably started when my parents were still alive and every time the phone rang there was a problem of some kind compounded with a few very bad news phone calls. I’ve stopped having tea or coffee first thing in the morning and now have hot water. If I’m going anywhere ( something I do less and less these days) I always have to take some Imodium. My gut ( as with most guts) has a mind of it’s own and I sometimes think it really doesn’t like me.

If you have IBS then stuff going in at the top end triggers stuff going out at the bottom end, especially in the mornings. And especially if it is hot drink.

Why not walk the dog at another later time and thus be near a loo when the onslaught occurs?

Heard on a recent podcast -

“Do you think diarrhoea is hereditary?

“No, definitely not.”

“Well it’s in my jeans” 🤣🤣

I have similar problems, , 😞 Suggest if you havnt already, you get those sachets to mix with water to avoid dehydration.

Kayjay40 Tue 12-Nov-24 13:25:44

Have you been tested for coeliac disease? Diarrhoea can be a major symptom. I was diagnosed in my mid 50s, after having symptoms of what I thought/was told was IBS.

Ktsmum Tue 12-Nov-24 13:32:09

I too take Immodium every morning if I am.going out, I have the same problem, sudden onset loose stools, awful if not near a toilet, Immodium does the trick and gives me confidence to go out on my daily walk without problems

silverlining48 Tue 12-Nov-24 13:40:49

Does it allow you to ‘go’ later in the day Ktsmum?

I had a similar problem several months ago and thought it was the iron tablets I was taking at the time. After switching to a different type of tablet which made no difference, I eventually discovered by trial and error that it was caused by the blueberries that I had on my breakfast every day. No idea why they should now cause me such a severe reaction as I’ve eaten them for years with no ill effects.

I've had this. I found the dog walk brought it on. I did read that runners suffer from well, needing to poo. I think its the movement. I tried changing to oat milk but found I was allergic. Then went lactose free. This did help. But the thing that's really helped is avoiding ultra proceeded foods. It's helped so much that for the first time in my life I've been getting constipated!

Sounds to me like you may have developed Bile Acid Diarrhoea (also known as Bile Acid Malabsorption or Bile Salt Diarrhoea - BAM/BAD/BSD). Excess bile salts get into your colon and cause irritation and hence vast amounts of uncontrollable diarrhoea. I have it, and if you do too, my condolences, it is a miserable condition.

Unfortunately, your GP almost certainly will not have heard of it (not a single doctor or nurse at my surgery had). They can do a test for it by prescribing one of the drugs used to control it, Colestyramine (a powder to mix with liquid, cheaper, less effective, and many people find it makes them gag) or Colesevelam (large pills, more expensive, more effective, but off-label as NICE hasn't actually approved it yet). These drugs bind with the excess salts before they get into the colon, reducing the inflammation. They work best in conjunction with a very low-fat, low-insoluble-fibre diet. They're pretty safe and shouldn't do much damage to the rest of you. If your diarrhoea dries up after taking them, you very probably have BAM/BAD/BSD.

Despite what will be written on your prescription, most people find that taking the drugs last thing at night on an empty stomach gives the best results.

Having checked what happens with the binders, you should be referred to your local gastrointestinal department, preferably to have a SeHCAT scan. Good luck with that. I personally have been waiting months for an appointment sad. You will have to come off any drugs for a fortnight; one week before taking the isotope, one week after before the actual scan.

This is not IBS though it is usually misdiagnosed as such. So things like a low FODMAPS diet won't help, nor will Buscopan (but some sufferers find that giving up gluten and/or dairy does help). Loperamide (Imodium) will appear to help but often causes knock on problems; best to rely on the binders and save the Loperamide for days when they won't work or where you really can't afford to be glued to a loo.

There is a Facebook group which is, as far as I can see, the only real source of information for sufferers.

The condition is thought to affect one person in one hundred, mostly women (of course). It is grossly underdiagnosed. It can be caused by damage to the colon (type 1), gall bladder removal (type 3), or, as in my case, no apparent cause (type 2).

If it is type 2, it comes with the added joy of metabolic slowdown and hence, weight gain. Many doctors refuse to believe that someone who is piling on the pounds can also be producing litres and litres of diarrhoea. They're wrong.

I have similar problems to the OP and if I avoid gluten my stomach does improve.
I've had two NHS Coeliac tests over the years, one positive and one negative, my GP doesn't reckon I have it but since I have a family history I believe I do.

Brilliant and new information to this sufferer. Thank you.

knspol Tue 12-Nov-24 14:23:09

I'm like this most mornings some much worse than others and it's been steadily getting worse over the years. If I have to go out in the morning then I need a couple of hours beforehand for 'toilet time' as I call it and I don't eat or drink first and I take some Immodium. I used to put it down to nerves but it can be bad on a day when I know I'm just staying home. It does really restrict me.

Gran2MA Tue 12-Nov-24 14:23:31

Pen50! Thank you.

missdeke Tue 12-Nov-24 14:54:02

Don't have tea or coffee before a walk with the dog, exercise, tea and coffee are all advised as a bowel stimulant for constipation. Nothing but water before you go out.

Greciangirl Tue 12-Nov-24 15:13:31

I suffer from what I think is IBS.
Constant toilet trips.
But I do not suffer with diarrhoea very much at all.
I also take Imodium if going out, but only if my bowels are in overdrive.
I try not to take Imodium as it stops me having bowel movements for several days which can be uncomfortable.

Do others who take Imodium on a daily basis have problems.?
