Welcome to the latest Hips and Knees where help advice support and encouragement is readily available to all

Aveline Tue 21-Jan-25 11:23:42

Redcar re steps remember it's up to heaven (unoperated leg first) and down to hell (operated leg first). That certainly helped me.

Grammaretto Tue 21-Jan-25 11:33:27

Aveline 😅

My post disappeared but I'm glad I postponed my cataract operation.
Hoping for better weather and mobility.
One body part at a time.

grammargran Tue 21-Jan-25 13:11:10

Isn’t it heartening we’re all making progress, albeit at different paces. This should give so much encouragement to anyone reading this who are just about to embark on their replacement “journey”.

Redcar Tue 21-Jan-25 13:32:39

aveline I just repeat Good, bad, crutch for up (but don’t use the crutch now) & crutch, bad, good going down, it does help. My friend in Kent was taught going up to heaven and down to hell! But she lives in a bungalow and struggles with any stairs now!
It’s really encouraging that we are all making progress and I do find this thread helpful and supportive.

I am bumping this up before we find ourselves in no man's land.

The weather sounds horrendous for the next few days, and although snow is not forecast for London, I am not a fan of high winds and heavy rain. Stay safe. I am unlikely to starve as I did a food shop yesterday in preparation.

Redcar Wed 22-Jan-25 14:17:47

I’ve been trying to go out for a walk every day, but today is so cold , grey and damp that I’ve given up! I’ve vacuumed the whole house, apart from the stairs, have some filing to do and other admin tasks. I’ve been doing my exercises too, so not an entirely lazy day.

Charleygirl5 Wed 22-Jan-25 14:31:01

Please Redcar could you sort out my admin? I do not understand the word file which does not help.

grammargran Wed 22-Jan-25 15:13:32

What on earth is the matter with you Redcar? Have you not got a good book to read? Charleygirl5 when you find out what file means, please pass on the info …

silverlining48 Wed 22-Jan-25 17:30:16

I did a couple of miles round Bluewater this afternoon, with all the talk about what we spend on coats and bags on other threads I thought I would have a look round.
I came home with a bottle of nail varnish remover and a blister.
I used to be a keen shopper, but no longer got the staying power.

Grammaretto Wed 22-Jan-25 18:53:48

Think how much you've saved silverlining!
I have been overdoing things a bit, I fear. I was at my dressmaking class this afternoon but there was too much standing, and leaning or sitting on seats which are too low so I left early, had a sleep but woke with a headache.

I'm longing to have a bath but I think it's too soon . When is it advised?

I can't blame housework or filing whatever that is as I haven't indulged in anything like that. 🤣😂

silverlining48 Wed 22-Jan-25 19:07:04

Hope you feel better tomorrow grammaretto.
About bathing do you still have your dressing on? If so you probably shouldn’t have a bath just now. Patience required for now. Hard though it is.

Charleygirl5 Wed 22-Jan-25 19:07:33

8Grammaretto* I am surprised the hospital did not sort out your bath for you. Birdbrain has forgotten if you have a new hip or knee. If a knee, now but maybe try and get out of a dry bath first.

If a hip, a piece of wood could be placed against the other side but that method means you cannot soak.

It will not be under 6 weeks, but I think you need advice from an OT or physio. I also suggest you have a trusted friend in the house in case you cannot get out because I doubt if you want to see the fire brigade, as has happened!

Nannytopsy Wed 22-Jan-25 19:19:08

Oo firemen! You’ve done it now Charleygirl!
I am trying to be good, exercising etc. I’m seeing the physio again on Friday.
The family arrive again tomorrow - our littlest is one today 🥰

grammargran Wed 22-Jan-25 19:40:03

Grammaretto everyone overdoes it at some stage, I did it at Christmas & my back took some time to recover. I’m seeing the physio on Friday, too, Nannytopsy - amazing how that motivates the exercises the closer it gets! Walked around the house unaided quite a bit today - does that count as exercise? - but it still feels a bit clumsy.

Redcar Wed 22-Jan-25 19:56:18

grammargran I hope walking round the house counts as exercise! My watch says I’ve done 2500 steps today walking around indoors. I’m not using crutches indoors, but my back is complaining, so I have a hot pad on it this evening!
silverlining Bluewater is a good place to exercise but how disappointing only to have bought a nail varnish!
grammaretto a day or so’s rest should ease your hip after the exertions of today.

Grammaretto Wed 22-Jan-25 19:59:12

Happy birthday to your little one Nannytopsy

It's only 3 weeks since my hip op so I know the answer to bathing. My wound has dried well and has no plaster but the last thing I want to do is get stuck in a bath.

Hi
O/A diagnosed last September. Referred to orthopaedics waiting list is 10months. Only 7 months to go. Then for surgery another 2 years waiting time. Joined gym and exercise class to keep mobile. This in Scotland by the way.
Good luck with your recovery

grammargran Wed 22-Jan-25 20:17:02

Welcome to the thread rjack. Listening to all our ramblings will give you excellent motivation to keep up your gym and exercise classes. And the fitter you are, the quicker you’ll recover from surgery when it comes around.

silverlining48 Wed 22-Jan-25 21:02:51

Redcar more disappointing still was coming back with a blister… ouch! 😣 grin

Redcar Wed 22-Jan-25 21:29:55

silverlining definitely ouch! I haven’t been to Bluewater for some years, I used to love it, but haven’t driven that far for ages,
grammargran several books to read, but also catching up on magazines that I’ve somehow missed reading.
rjack I’ll second grammargran, well done for joining the exercise classes and the gym, it’s hard work, but you will definitely feel the benefit when you’ve had your operation.

Grammaretto Wed 22-Jan-25 22:22:49

Welcome rjack ! Well done doing all the exercises.
I'm also in Scotland. After my assessment, x-ray etc, i was 2 years on the waiting list. I rang to find where I was and was told if I was willing to travel to Clydebank I could have my operation sooner.

Last October I had an assessment there and was told my operation would be within 12 weeks. Then a phonecall to say to come in 30th December!

I am very pleased with my treatment there.
I think it probably does help to ring occasionally to keep your case near the top of the pile.

Charleygirl5 Wed 22-Jan-25 22:59:36

Welcome rjack and if you decide to stay with us you will pick up a few tips en route. Please ask any question that comes to mind as somebody will be able to give you a sensible answer or steer you to a professional who will.

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:36:55

Redcar it’s only a 5 minute drive for me, but won’t go back for a while.

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:38:44

Well 10 sometimes or if the bridge is blocked then the whole town is blocked, then on a bad day, it can take a couple of hours due to traffic jams.

silverlining48 Thu 23-Jan-25 13:41:37

Hi rjack. Welcome to our hips and knees thread. It’s helped many of us so don’t hesitate if you have a question.
