A close friend of our’s needs to have a total ankle arthroplasty (ankle replacement). Unfortunately he is the carer for his partner who is very much an invalid. He is worried about how much care they will both need and for how long. Can anyone help please? Have you been through this and can you offer any advice? Thank you.

I know someone who has had a similar operation. They were incapable of any load bearing for some weeks, even with assistance. They graduated to a wheeled walker.
In fact it was about 12 weeks before they were on crutches. They went to stay with a relative who could be there 24/7
The medical team changed the type of plaster cast frequently as the healing process progressed.
I think your friend will need to explore a great deal of support.
Sorry I can’t give a more detailed reply.

Weight bearing joints like feet do take longer to heal because of the weight and pressure. Your friend needs to plan and make enquiries about availability of help.
