Recovery from sepsis

I am so sorry that you have both been through this. My convalescence advice to patients was very general I'm afraid. Certainly plenty of quality rest, if you need to go to bed go don't sit cramped up in an arm chair then maybe try and stretch a little bit afterwards. Look after nutrition, probably doesn't want to eat a lot and there is sometimes a lactose intolerance so easy on the dairy, light protein chicken and fish and don't forget some fibre. Also after such a lot if antibiotics the gut biome will have been affected so watch out for any signs of urine infection and constipation. Really its juts good nursing care with a big dollop of love and understanding for DH and for yourself. I hope DH is better soon and you are taking care of yourself. Best wishes .

DH suffered 4 bouts of sepsis in 3 years and was near death several times. He was nursed in isolation and although I was allowed to visit (in full PPE) he often didn’t know I was there. He really was very, very ill.

After discharge, after the final bout, we both felt that sepsis had left an effect on his mental capacity and he was so concerned he might have the start of dementia, that he visited our GP. Luckily, the GP echoed my own thoughts that he was suffering with PSS - post sepsis syndrome, which I’d previously googled and confirmed it was an actual condition. To be honest, I don’t think DH ever recovered from his sepsis ordeals.

I hope your DH feels better soon, but best to be prepared for a long uphill struggle.

Yes, I’ve purchased an ear thermometer and take his temperature every day, so at the slightest sign I shall get help. I am making sure that he drinks 6-8 half pints of fluid a day, and have stepped up protein and omega 3 (Kippers for breakfast once a week, salmon and mackerel for dinner once a week). He is also taking riboflavin plus other supplements to boost his immune system.

The house is kept at 21c, and he tends to sleep in shifts, up maybe 4 hours sleep 4 hours. His sleep pattern is beginning to settle and he is more or less sleeping through the night. The catheter used when he was very poorly, seems to have affected his incontinence, but we are hopeful that will recover in time.

Any other ideas folks?
