When I started doing 30 seconds balancing on each leg whilst cleaning my teeth in the morning, my family and friends thought I was nuts. After a year and a half my balance improved substantially. I can now stand on one leg and put a sock on the other foot without holding on to anything. At 74.5 I was reckoning that it was very good.

Forward to last week Thursday evening, I was taking my granddaughters to swimming when I tripped and fell, hearing an enormous crack and saw my right knee swelling rapidly. The people at the gym/swimming pool couldn’t have been more helpful. My daughter came to collect us, rang an ambulance and then took us all to her house. 4 hours later the ambulance arrived. They checked all my vitals, including the pulse in my foot then gave me lots of pain relief and took me off to A&E. I’m not sure how long I waited but I had an X-ray and the staff there were great.

I was admitted and spent 2 nights in hospital before being sent home with crutches, pain killers, a cricket splint and diagnosis of broken patella. I’m likely to be off my feet for a while. They are hoping not to operate.

It’s changed all our Christmas plans BUT my balance exercises have paid dividends. Being able to balance means my good leg is in full use getting up and down. I can balance to do all sorts of things such as picking up stuff from the floor by keeping my injured leg straight and bending my other leg, keeping balanced.

Thank you Michael for “Just One Thing”. Thank you NHS
for all your help and support to keep pain free, at home and on the mend. (BTW an ambulance in the USA costs about £5k! and is not covered by general health insurance). Let’s count ourselves lucky and hope the NHS is saved.

Happy Christmas Everyone

He was an inspirational man.
Must be so sad for his family especially at this time of year.
But they can be proud that he was such a positive force for good encouraging people to make the most of their lives.
As he did.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, ayse!

Another MM one I thought excellent, was saying that if people would walk for just 15 minutes a day….

So many people who could, simply never walk anywhere. IMO the advice to do 10,000 steps a day has very likely been counter productive. I wouldn’t mind betting that many people just thought, Oh, I’m never going to manage/have time for, so many, so there’s no point bothering at all.

ayse three cheers for Michael Moseley. Kind thoughts to his family this Christmas.
Hope your knee heals swiftly. I broke my patella years ago.

pascal30 Tue 24-Dec-24 14:32:27

If only he hadn't been so keen on walking though

yogitree Tue 24-Dec-24 14:53:28

ayse, I just tried yours/MM's trick of balancing on one leg whilst brushing teeth. I can't do it - I have been struggling with balance since hip replacements. I do hope you manage to enjoy a Merry (and pain-free) Christmas despite your injuries.

Thank you everyone and I too hope the Moseley’s have a happy Christmas.

For anyone who does try the balance challenge you have to keep at it and concentrate. I used the bathroom sink to rebalance myself and chose a place on the wall to start at. My left leg balance was much better than my right. It took me ages to be able to do it on both legs. The cliche practice makes perfect (or nearly ) is so true.

Thank you for your good wishes as well. I just count myself lucky I was fit enough and had enough family support to go home.

He never came into my life until he was in the news and dead
So he wasn’t a lot of use to me however I have done the balancing thing just not through him
Hope you knee gets better soon

Grammaretto Tue 24-Dec-24 17:24:02

I also practice balancing and you're right, it improves with practice.

What rotten luck to break your leg just before Christmas ayse.

I hope you manage to enjoy yourself.
I hope the Moseley family aren't too sad. He really was a good person.

I think you have just given me my New Year’s resolution, so thank you. Hope your recovery is straightforward and rapid.

Sorry to hear of your broken leg as it definitely will make life difficult when you are an active person. I broke my ankle some years ago and not being able to drive caused a lot of disruption to my life. Re the ambulance cost in the USA And you saucing it would cost $5k and not covered by insurance. Is this a fact or somebody said to somebody thing. My relatives are in the USA and obviously have insurance for medical matters. They have never told me ambulances aren’t covered for their cost and find it hard to believe that they aren’t.

Listen to Girl Gone London and another couple on UTube comparing the USA to GB and the NHS. This is what they said about the costs of ambulances in the USA. I’m just repeating what I heard from American Citizens. Happy to be corrected. Maybe depends on how much insurance you can afford.

Physio told me it is safer to stand with the toes of one foot touching the heel of the other foot, starting with 30 seconds each foot and when your balance is good you start doing it with your eyes closed. He said it was safer than standing on one leg, less falls, but just as effective.

My GC love doing it, we challenge each other and see who can do it for the longest. GS1 is usually the winner.

Sounds like a sobriety test.

MM I think was an unwitting victim of his own ego. Very sad for his family.
He had no new ideas but was a great communicator.

Ilovedogs22 Wed 25-Dec-24 17:04:24

I miss Michael's easy style of explaining often complicated subject matters. He was a wonderful, easy communicator.
Jeanathome, As a walker it's not hard to overreach oneself; particularly when a day suddenly becomes very hot!
Also, sometimes it creeps-up upon a walker just how very tired they are & how far they have to go! Particularly if the weather drastically changes. Rest in peace Michael Moseley.🤔

I have been doing balancing exercises for years and years. It was either The Green Goddess or a yoga video that I followed. So, long before Michael Moseley came on our screens.

Hope you are doing well ayse nice post.

I trying to understand why, if your daughter collected you and drove you to her house you then required an ambulance to take you to hospital? It seems rather a waste of what had sadly become a service under pressure. Couldn’t she have taken you straight to hospital? Anyway, I hope your recovery is swift and uneventful.

yellowfox Sun 29-Dec-24 11:28:00

Mr Moseley should have followed his own advice and NOT gone walking in extreme heat.
So sorry for his family. An unneccesary death.

I was in rather bad pain and felt very ill. We did call the ambulance service and they advised us to wait for the ambulance. Had they said for her to take me we would have tried. I was unable to walk or hop and was very fearful of hurting myself further.

I’ve never called an ambulance in my life before so unless you know what a broken leg/patella feels like, I suggest you have a little more compassion.

ayse Sun 29-Dec-24 11:33:55

Oh and they had to carry me from the car and into the house. This was of the guys from the gym facility and my daughter!

Happilyretired123 Sun 29-Dec-24 11:49:23

Sorry about your fall but your story is so positive and uplifting from the inspiration provided by Michael Mosley to the kindness and efficiency of the NHS. Let’s cherish and build on what we have. 💐wishing you a speedy recovery.

Sounds a bit grudging! Hope you recover soon Ayse x💐

There are much safer ways of practising your balancing than standing on one leg whilst cleaning your teeth. That's madness.

lixy Sun 29-Dec-24 12:23:48

I miss Michael Mosley, one of the very few celebrities to impact on me emotionally. I use his cookery books and follow his fasting advice daily.

I hope your recovery is swift Ayse, and thank you for remembering this special man as well as praising the NHS.
