I'd like to start taking a supplement to help with eye health and wondered if anyone could recommend
a supplement they have found has improved their eyesight ?
I will ask my optician but I'd like to have some ideas of what does help .
Thanks in advance .

I think you’re delusional.

I use Maccushield or Macusave. They both have ingredients that Michael Moseley recommended in one of his programmes years ago and I’ve been taking them ever since. I try to buy them when there’s a 2 for 3 offer on somewhere eg Holland and Barrett or Boots.

welbeck Wed 08-Jan-25 08:05:51

Ditto.
Macusave is 25 pound in Savers.
For 3 months.
Since I discovered this I don't bother with Boots.

Thank you Maybe70 and Welbeck. Have you found your eyesight has improved while taking the supplements ?

Supplements that will improve your eyesight in what way?

Sort out cataracts and/or short/long sight? protect from glaucoma or macular degeneration? Stop eye problems with temporal arteritis?

What is the evidence that they are effective?

My sister ‘s optician advised macusave as we have family history of dry macular degeneration

They contain lutein, meso-zeaxanthin, dl-alphatocopherol, zeaxanthin. In the programme he said that it is the meso zeaxanthan that was important. People went on a special diet for weeks that had the same effect but he said that the food involved was so expensive that it was more cost effective to buy a supplement. I’ve taken them for years so don’t know what my eyesight would have been like if I didn’t take them. I don’t seem to have ( touch wood) any problems with my eyes when I have my 2 yearly check. I do seem to take a lot of supplements but if I had to reduce them Maccushield would be the one I’d be loathe to stop taking so I always stock up on them. I’ll check Savers out; that’s worth knowing. Thanks.

I don't expect improvement.
I hope it might stave off or delay decline.
There was evidence in that Michael Mosely programme.
It's a few years ago now but probably still available.

Macusave used to be a lot cheaper than Macushield but they seem to be the same price these days.

I’m not a believer in any way of the need for vitamins in the Western world where we all enjoy a good and varied diet. I remember a doctor saying years ago that they just produce expensive wee.

welbeck Wed 08-Jan-25 08:24:52

In my local Savers they are not shelved with the other vitamins.
Thay are in a separate section with reading glasses and eye drops.
Assistants were not much assistance in finding them.
But I saw them there last week.

Well, that's fine if you eat a very varied diet, probably organic, and have zero health conditions.

M0nica Wed 08-Jan-25 08:27:49

I get the feeling that unless there is a history of macular generation in your family, or other indications that you may get it, a supplement specifically for the eyes is probably a waste of money.

The one supplement every one should be taking is vitamin D. Research has shown that most people in the UK are Vitamin D deficient in the winter months and Vitamin D is needed for strong bones.

This was the summary of the experiment ‘There’s good evidence now that increasing the amount of these pigment chemicals in your diet can help improve your eyesight. There is also some evidence that it may help prevent damage to your eyesight through macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in the UK, and Prof Nolan’s group have seen evidence that boosting the macular pigments can help.

The question, then, is how best to get these compounds into our diet. The strongest evidence at the moment is around supplements containing all three of the macular compounds. However, many researchers believe that simply eating a diet rich in leafy green vegetables should be enough to keep your levels healthy. Be aware, though, that carrots – despite the myth that eating them will help your vision – do NOT contain particularly high levels of any of these compounds!

If you are at all worried about your vision, then do see an optometrist as soon as possible. Early intervention in the case of vision problems is key ‘.
I doubt if many of us eat the required amount of green leafy vegetables; I know I don’t!

Too much VitD can cause problems unless taken with Vitamin K. And you can’t take Vitamin K if you’re on blood thinners.

I have got very dry eyes and had the beginnings of cataracts. I saw the Michael Mosely TV programme in which he tested eye supplements, spoke to my optician and started myself on Macushield which has made a huge difference.

The cataracts have never progressed and I have gone from using prescription eye drops approx 10 times a day to relieve soreness, down to twice a day.

Nanato3 Wed 08-Jan-25 08:36:45

I am unable to eat a healthy diet due to health issues so thought it best to take a supplement.
I have dry macular degeneration and getting eyestrain despite changing my glasses every year.
I will check savers out . Thanks

Nanato3 Wed 08-Jan-25 08:38:25

Sparklefizz, That is good to hear . Eyesight is precious.

nanna8 Wed 08-Jan-25 08:38:35

I’m with FriedGreenTomatoes2 and have heard the same from my GP. Vitamin D is a different matter because it keeps your bones supple - so I go into the sun fairly often and risk melanomas. You can’t win, can you ?

A few years ago at my eye check up I was told that I was starting to develop cataracts but at my latest check up the optician said my eyes were fine. Can’t say for certain that it was the supplement that helped but I’m not going to risk not taking it.

Too much VitD can cause problems unless taken with Vitamin K. And you can’t take Vitamin K if you’re on blood thinners.

How about taking too much of any supplement? You have to take risks in this life but the only supplement I take is Vit D, double strength in the winter.

It is not only essential for bones but also for the immune system.

Luckily my blood is fine but I don't need to take Vit K.

Nanato3 Wed 08-Jan-25 08:48:42

I'm Vit D deficient but D3 makes me sleep all day . I'd like to try it with K2 but I'm on blood thinners
So can't win !

MayBee70 Wed 08-Jan-25 08:49:42

Oh I take Vit D; my whole family does. But I now add K2 just to be on the safe side.

The dermatologist I saw about a suspicion patch on my nose made me promise to use Factor 50 every day from now on.
So no, we can't win 🤷
