Is this just getting older?

I’ve always felt fit and flexible. I have had the big C with all entails, but this last year (I’ll be 66 this year) I’ve found aches and pains appearing. I sit on the floor and get up to stagger about going ‘oooh, ouch’ or in the morning I ache for no clear reason. I almost brought the coffee out without putting milk in it and now I’m very anxious. Am I going senile? Am I meant to ache? Or is something wrong! Any comments on what is ‘expected/normal’ as we grow older would be appreciated.

Do you feel you could do some moderate exercise? There are loads of classes for keep fit, pilates, yoga, swimming. A gentle session, walking can help with aches and pains. Even an exercise bike can help strengthen the legs without having to go out as can yoga etc online if uou can access classes on a computer. You can access these alone or join in online. You have had the strength to overcome serious illness, you will find a way to feel you are coping with life and hopefully enjoy it too.

I have a friend who has done yoga all her life. When she was younger she did Latin American dancing. Now in her late 70s she teaches yoga and pilates for U3A. She has always been far fitter than me but now if she spends more than a few minutes sitting down she stiffens up just as quickly as I do and has just as much trouble getting up again.

I too am 66 (well 67 tomorrow) and been suffering with lots of aches and joint pains. I can no longer have a bath as now I can't get out !

I do suffer with Systemic Mastocytosis and arthritus.
But about 2 months ago I started taking magnesium with calcium and I must say the pain has subsided immensely.
Also I tend to get awful viruses in the winter (last yr got pneumonia and was hospitalised) so last autumn I started taking high dose vitamin D and I've not suffered with any flu , viruses etc . this winter.
Maybe you could try taking some supplements , oh and take deep breaths too , that helps when feeling anxious.

I think you should see your GP & tell them how you're feeling, let them check you over. I've really struggled since October last year, body parts hurting & aching for no reason - I've decided that my body doesn't like cold weather. Swimming is good for you, it takes little effort but the benefits are huge. I can hardly move when I get in the pool but after about 5 slow lengths all the struggles disappear. It boosts your mood and you sleep better. I've also started some Vitabiotics tablets for joints & muscles - after a few days I didn't ache anymore. If you're in pain it affects your mood & then you stop doing things - it's a vicious circle.

That's my way round things xx

There is a short comedy series called 'Only Child' on iPlayer where the son comes to visit his elderly father. I watched it with my daughter and she kept saying: 'That's YOU!'. Finding TV remote in the fridge etc. I recommend watching it for a gentle look at how re-engaging with the community is beneficial. Also, did you know that astronauts in the International Space Station take Vitamin D in high strength, because they don't have access to natural sunlight. They exercise daily, but if they didn't take Vitamin D, their bones and muscles would just be jelly-like. So it's very important to get a blood test and check your Vit D levels. Also, may I just say well done on getting through cancer treatment. Be gentle with yourself. Best wishes.

Im seventy, still working, aches and pains, yes, but nothing unmanageable.
My big problem is sleeping, I’ve tried everything ever invented to help me sleep, apart from actual sleeping pills, no luck, therefore, I often wander around like I’ve got a massive hangover, and during the day I can be asleep in seconds, but can’t sleep all night!
Apart from that, still fairly fit.

Our memory (assuming we don't have dementia yet) is probably just as good as it ever was, but we have loads more content to sort through to get to the information. I sometimes cannot recall a name or something then suddenly the next day it pops up into my mind while I am doing something completely unrelated!

I would urge you to have blood tests for inflammation. My aches, pains and stiffness turned out to be the autoimmune disease Polymialgia Rhuematica ( PMR). Treated easily and quickly with Prednisalone. I left it undiagnosed for too long. Old age shouldn’t hurt as much as all that.

67 here, and I too seem to get pains in random places which just come and go. The only persistent pain is in my left thumb joint, maybe arthritis. Also getting forgetful, terrible at remembering names. I go into another room and stop dead wondering why did I come in here - I'm sure we've all been there.

PollyJ I have found that if I sit longer than a few minutes first thing in the morning when I stand up I am very stiff and sore.

My fix for this is to go for a walk more or less straight after waking and my aches and pains disappear.

I mentioned this to my doctor and he said the movement of a brisk 40 minute walk each morning lubricates all the joints and muscles.

Give it a try, oh it it tends to life my mood too!

That is interesting. I had wondered just how much long-term stress affects the body. Shows how vital it is to find an activity which helps to relieve the tension.
