Is this just getting older?

I’ve always felt fit and flexible. I have had the big C with all entails, but this last year (I’ll be 66 this year) I’ve found aches and pains appearing. I sit on the floor and get up to stagger about going ‘oooh, ouch’ or in the morning I ache for no clear reason. I almost brought the coffee out without putting milk in it and now I’m very anxious. Am I going senile? Am I meant to ache? Or is something wrong! Any comments on what is ‘expected/normal’ as we grow older would be appreciated.

Yep a different place creaks or hurts every day. I’m sure it’s just normal and nothing to worry about.

All normal am sure just general aches and pains and not having the super memory we used to have.

Just be grateful that you can get down to sit on the floor, let alone get up again!

For some reason I feel a bit stiff and sore, probably cos I'm 75!
If I take two Paracetamol every morning I'm as right as rain for the day!

Pollyj
You have posted several times about your anxiety.
Are you aware of the damage that is done to your body when you are anxious? Your body is folded with toxins and chemicals ( fight or flight)
If these are not expelled from your body they are stored in your muscles.
The brain fog is another sym.
Unless there’s something else going on you should not feel like this at 66.

I have been told this. I don’t want to lose it.

Pollyj Mon 20-Jan-25 13:39:57

You’re right. It is my biggest problem. I’ve tried over the years to combat it. I try to think that much of my mood and fears are due to this alone.

Pollyj perhaps counselling would help.

JaneJudge Mon 20-Jan-25 13:56:57

have you had you vitamin B levels checked?

Pollyj Mon 20-Jan-25 15:57:57

No. I might do that.

Have you talked to your GP about your anxiety? You can get medication for specific types of anxiety.

I have ached since I was a child infact been in constant pain since a child. Which I am used to. I am now 66 . Last 5 years found I make a groan when I stand up . When I take my shoes off and put my slippers it's bliss. No aching feet. Until I had my bed bar 3 years ago I didn't realise I struggled to get into bed as well as out.
I exercise daily and go to sit fit class once a week. Just to keep my limbs working . I read and cross stitch to keep my mine active . Had to start wearing thermal vests 5 years ago. My joints ache more in the cold weather. And moan if it's to hot. It's getting older . My mom always said older never old .

I forget to put tea bags into mugs, sit down for my meal and forget the cutlery. I have an idiot proof dishwasher. 2 buttons on the front you can guarantee I will forget once a week to press the second button.

Its not old age as young people forget as well. It's just we are thinking ahead of the next thing to do . Well I do. I find routine helps me to cope with everyday living .

Polly you are a survivor you have beaten cancer and gone through all the horrors you had to go through. You are entitled to ache and groan . Your body has taken an awful battering plus you mental health has been through the wringer . You are not going senile your body is telling you to rest and relax . If you want a nap during the day have one I do. Just listen to your body. I am guilty of over don't things then paying for them .

I get very annoyed at myself when I can't open a bottle I could a month ago. It's hard to accept we can't do things we did. But it doesn't mean we can't find a way to do what you want but your way.

Polly I always try and find a positive from a negative even if it's just a flower or cloud. There is always something if you look.

Recently I was told I had a heart attack and would need stents. Only had bad headache and pain left side of my neck . But the positive from that when they did the angiography I didn't need any stents as I had no blockages in my heart .

Polly you beat cancer getting older is just another part of life . And would you want to 30 or 40 again. Live your life to the full and don't worry about what ifs or if onlies .

Yep, there it is. Aches, pains, memory glitches, declining strength and stamina... You're only 66?! Luv, you're nobbut a young gal, put some time in! grin

Pollyj, sadly it is called getting older.

A friend of mine always says’Old age is not for the faint hearted’

Pollyj Mon 20-Jan-25 22:20:57

Thank you so much for your, thoughtful reply. You made me smile and feel better. You sound like a battler too, and still focus on the joys to be found. LL THE BEST OF WISHES TO YOU.

I would get your vitamin D level checked as well, specially this time of year.

I have osteoarthritis in many joints and kidney disease caused by medication for arthritis so I was told. I have asthma brought on by a job I did years ago. I had hip replacement when I was 53 and told I need knee replacements.
I have had multiple operations elsewhere for different problems. Some physical movement is hindered by all this but I won’t let it beat me I’m not the strong fit young woman I once was. My body is aging a bit too rapidly really but my mind is still in my twenties with a little added forgetfulness.
So eat well take supplements if you feel the need and just walk a bit more each day. Stay positive and take care of yourself.

Pollyj Tue 21-Jan-25 12:39:32

Warrior. X I’d like a walking group to encourage me. I’ll look into it.

mabon1 Tue 21-Jan-25 12:40:38

I'm 83 and fortunate to able to walk about 2 - 3 miles each day (except if it is raining heavily). No particular aches and pains. Healthy diet, take vitamin D all year round, sleep well, cut the grass, mind still young, still driving.People say I do not look my age so all round cannot complain. I believe that much is in the genes.

Indiebee Tue 21-Jan-25 12:46:43

Yes, it is just getting older! I am 84 and am sort of fit! Walking, exercise class, sleeping well (and napping if my body says so, eg. maybe twice a week), eating sensibly, seeing friends, going to events etc. However I certainly know what 'aches and pains' means - a phrase I never understood until I had them. I have had 2 hip replacements so think some of it must be arthritis in other parts. Thus Keep Moving!! It's essential.
