Still waiting

So here I am, at home, still in pain, and with no idea when I’m going in hospital for my surgery. It has been cancelled for the third time, leaving me feeling depressed and upset.

I’m due to have spinal surgery, a replacement disc at c5 c6 in my neck. It’s taken me a long time to get here. I had pain, slowly increasing for two years before I consulted my rather unsympathetic GP. If I’d known how long it would take to get here, or how serious my pain was, maybe I’d have gone sooner, but the pain wasn’t too bad, and I don’t like going to the doctor, so I ignored it until I could ignore it no longer. Then followed a further year of tests and meetings with various people in the NHS before a consultant said I should have a diagnostic MRI. Following that, I had my diagnosis.

I finally saw a spinal consultant a year ago. Initially he recommended a steroid injection into my neck, which did nothing. Then he said I need a disc replacement as the disc is crumbling and damaged (why bother with a steroid injection because that was never going to heal the disc) and it would be three to four months wait for the surgery. That was eight months ago. On Friday last week, my surgery was cancelled for the third time. My pain has increased considerably over the last few weeks, I’m in permanent pain, and I’m feeling extremely depressed and upset about it all. I understand that the hospital’s IT was taken down a week ago in the storms and so they’re rearranging some surgeries, but this is my third rearrangement. I have no idea when my next date for surgery will be, and I’m in considerable pain.

I’m just sad and fed up.

I would feel fedup and sad too if this was me.
The fact that you waited so long for a diagnosis is bad enough but then to get psyched up for your procedure to then have it cancelled is too much.
Unfortunately I-have no answer only sympathy.

Thank you UTBB, it’s just nice that someone understands.

Feeling so sorry, maddyone, that you are having to go through this. Hopefully, you won’t have to wait much longer.

So sorry to hear this, maddyone. I hope that you are at the top of the list and receive some good news soon.

Nothing worse than getting ready and psyched up only to have it all dashed Fingers crossed you ll hear soon Maybe a call to the hospital from you might nudge them in the right direction

Aveline Mon 03-Feb-25 14:19:18

Oh dear. That's rotten. I do feel for you. Fingers firmly crossed that they get in with it and quickly get round to giving you a new date for the op - and stick to it! Please keep us updated as to progress

Thank you so much ladies. I really appreciate your comments. The latest update is that I have spoken to the team at the hospital this afternoon. It seems that if I had been on the list for this afternoon, my surgery would have gone ahead, but unfortunately I was on the list for this morning. Surgery was restarted this afternoon. All patients (such as myself) who have been cancelled are going to be fitted in as and when. They are discussing how/whether to fit in some additional surgical lists, but I have no idea when those would be (maybe weekends?)

What I took from that discussion is that I will be waiting for some more weeks. I can’t tell you level of disappointment I feel because my pain levels have increased so much lately. Also because I’ve reduced the level of activity I’m engaged in substantially. That is to try to avoid very much contact with other people with there being so much illness around which could prevent my surgery going ahead. So no theatre trips, cinema, no lunches out or visits to restaurants or pubs, and limited visits to shops and I’m wearing a mask when I do go. I can, and do go for walks around my local area. Basically I’m avoiding other people, except I do see my family at weekends. I realise even they could bring infection to me, but I have to see some people.

I just wonder how much longer.

I too feel for you flowers It’s unjust and very annoying and being in constant pain is so depressing and debilitating smile

SueDonim Mon 03-Feb-25 20:39:28

That’s terrible, I’m so sorry. flowers I’d call the medical secretary every week, to find out the latest, and also hope that by reminding them you’re still there, you’ll get seen soon.

Fwiw, a friend has been waiting 18mths for two new knees and she’s now thinking of raiding her piggy bank to pay privately to have at least one done, to make her life more tolerable. It’s a shocking state of affairs.

I’m sorry you’re having to go thru this. Sending hugs 🤗

The constant pain is so depressing, I know how you must be feeling, my DH had injections for pain in his shoulder that has been going on for many months, the injections didn't work so after a scan revealed bursitis and a frozen shoulder as well as an inpingement and OA he has now been referred but it could take 6 months or longer to see a specialist. He can't sleep for the pain, and the pain killers he was prescribed make him feel like a zombie and unable to drive so he stopped taking them.
My heart goes out to you. Is truly horrible being in pain like this and wondering when anyone is going to actually do something about it.
As others have said keep ringing to ask when your op will be.
Take care xx

I personally know six people in our village who have had to pay privately for hip or knee operations because they simply cannot bear the pain any longer.

I'm sorry to hear that your long-awaited operation still hasn't happened, maddyone. And that the delay is affecting your life in so many ways. I do hope it happens soon and that the pain disappears for good. flowers

Katyj Mon 03-Feb-25 21:32:00

What a sad and sorry state the NHS is in ! So sorry maddy. Just awful having to wait and be in so much pain. My friend is in a similar predicament, she had a foot operation in September, and after months of following instructions to the letter, it sadly hasn’t worked, and she’s back to square one.
She, like you, is in a lot of pain and can barely walk. She has to go back on the list again. So frustrating. I really hope you get another appointment ASAP flowers

So sorry to hear you’re going through this. It really isn’t at all fair….💐💐

crazyH Mon 03-Feb-25 21:50:01

So sorry to hear this - it’s not fair at all - it will all be sorted. I know there is a long waiting list for spinal surgery. I have first-hand knowledge.. Hope you won’t have to wait much longer. Let us know . In the meanwhile, here are sone flowers

That is truly awful maddyone.

I hope your surgery is imminent.

I will pray for you, if that is ok.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Feb-25 09:44:54

Sorry maddyone I hope you can be fitted on a surgical list sooner than later 🌸

Aldom Tue 04-Feb-25 09:55:26

I'm so sorry for the delay to your surgery Maddyone. Just hoping a cancellation comes up and it will be offered to you. The only consolation I can offer is that a family member had the same operation several years ago and it was totally successful. All the best for your surgery, when it happens. flowers

cornergran Tue 04-Feb-25 10:16:35

I wish you had a sympathetic GP maddy, sometimes a nudge from them helps. It’s an awful situation to be in, if you can bear to it may be worth phoning weekly stressing increased pain levels and social isolation, there could just be a cancellation. Sending love and a hug.

annodomini Tue 04-Feb-25 10:41:52

On the basis of 'it's not what you know but who you know', in a similar situation, I emailed all the members of the trust's board some of whom I did know, to tell them what the waiting list administrator had done. I was then re-instated close to the top of the list. Would you consider writing to your MP to put them in the picture? Leave no stone unturned!

Elless Tue 04-Feb-25 11:00:50

I genuinely feel for you. I had my pre op last week for an op scheduled for March 12th, I haven't even written it on my calendar because I know it will be postponed. When I had my other side done it was cancelled three times and until I am actually on the table being wheeled into theatre I won't believe it is actually going ahead.

MissAdventure Tue 04-Feb-25 11:04:04

It's awful, feeling cast afloat, with no input, and worrying you'll slip through the net and off the radar.

It's easy to see how it happens, too, to vulnerable people.
