Atorvastatin. Your experiences please.

What suits one doesn't always suit another. My OH was prescribed a statin some years ago - can't recall which one though. It didn't suit him as he had really uncomfortable side effects. He mentioned this to the GP/prescribing nurse, and it was changed to a different one. He hasn't looked back since.

Taking into account the details of PMH within families and the fact that it is important to acknowledge that the prime individual responsible for our health and welfare is ourselves I think that accepting as much medical advice to avoid strokes/heart attacks is vital.

It’s a horrible dilemma isn’t it. I was prescribed the same in December with similar total cholesterol level to you but have declined to take it as I have really bad muscle pain anyway. Amlodopine does keep my BP in check and for some reason my high pulse rate which I had for a couple of years is far better. Good luck whatever you decide. Sorry about your mother and sister.

I had horrible side effects with it, I'm sorry to say.

I have been taking Atorvastin for about 2 years. I was reluctant at first because I had read about the muscle problems. About a month into it I started having aches and pains. The pharmacist advised a 2 week break to see if the medication was causing it. The aches and pains were still there so I knew it wasn’t the statin. Since then I’ve been absolutely fine. I would urge you to do everything you can to safeguard your future health and would humbly suggest that your blood pressure sounds too high.

I take atorvastatin, have done for years, and had no side effects, am also on 10mg.
See how you go, if you do have side effects go back to your GP.

I also think your BP us too high. Please ask to do a BP diary when you see your GP, you could need different meds.

I was prescribed atorvastatin by our practice pharmacist. ( Primary prevention) After a few months I felt very lethargic and just not ' right' my legs felt heavy and uncomfortable. I spoke to my siblings who also take it
they are fine. I made an appointment with the pharmacist and he changed my medication to Rosuvastatin - no more problems thankfully. I was reluctant to take statins but gave decided it is better to be safe than sorry! Hope you are fine and without any side effects.

I have been taking it for years, with no side effects. Despite low chlorestoral I was prescribed it after a heart attack and cardiovascular issues, as a belt and braces precaution.

Been taking it for years without any problems, 7-8 million people take it in the UK. People only tend to post if they have problems, the vast majority do not.

Given your health history I would give it a go for a few months. You might not have any problems and, if you do, you can try something different.

I've had no problems with Avorstatin, nor with Amlodipine, taken for high BP.
I think that they might just keep me alive and well, given a family history of heart disease.

It didn’t seem to make any difference so I asked my GP if I could stop taking it and he agreed. My cardiologist said the important medications for me are Warfarin, Bisoprolol, and Losartan.

My DH is on Atorvastatin with no side effects. He was on 30mg daily but while he was in hospital they took him off it because they thought it was causing a problem with his liver. It turned out not to be so and our GP has put him back 10mg as his Cholesterol levels rose. Otherwise no problem.
I'm on 30mg of Pravastatin and no side effects either.

I've been on atorvastatin for about 3 years due to cholesterol rocketing after menopause though now thought to be familial high cholesterol
I'm pretty achy anyway due to arthritis and other issues but certainly don't feel they've got any worse
If this one doesn't suit you try another my husband had to change statins as one didn't agree with him and GPs are well aware of this
As a side note amlodipine increases the effectiveness of statins so dose may need to be reduced this also happened to husband!

Taken it for about 15 years. No side effects whatsoever.

I was prescribed Atorvastatin in November last year. Had to stop as after a few days it made me feel sick and bad stomach pains .
Doctor swapped me to another, can’t remember the name but something like Stavavastin and I have no side effects from that.

Absolutely fine.
Taken it since 2017, I think.

My BP and cholesterol is similar to yours.

I’ve taken Atorvastatin for 20 years, absolutely no problems at all, in-fact I felt an improvement in fitness soon after starting them - aerobic capacity/exercising.

My lovely GP confirmed there was some (anecdotal?) evidence of this being the case - it might reduce some pre existing plaque?

I also have very nice dreams, in colour, very vivid, exciting adventures….all very positive - GP confirmed probably due to crossing the blood brain barrier I think.

I’m on 40 mg - low dose (another GP wanted to increase to 80 mg, but I’m holding off so far).

So your 10 mg dose sounds very low - and safe.

Cannot tolerate any statin, I have had muscle aches, severe cramp,crippling constipation, excruciating shoulder pain and an itchy rash all over my torso that needed steroids to get rid of it.
