It’s 3 years since I began this thread prior to my new hip hop op and it’s still a surprise that we are going strong.
There are many of us on here who can answer most questions and give support and encouragement to anyone setting out on this adventure.
No no need to read all the way through, there are 5000 posts, just ask your question and it will get a friendly and helpful response. Welcome to all.

teabagwoman You will be unable to change your bedding for a few weeks. If your cleaner has not already done it, maybe she could. Then, put it in your machine, and she will be able to hang it out before she leaves.

To save the duvet cover from being changed so frequently, maybe place a sheet between you and the duvet. I personally did not find it comfortable but needs must.

Sleeping on your back can be a problem, so maybe semi-prop yourself up. Again, maybe try it now.

GN still only notifying me from time to time about posts on the thread, so late to the discussion yet again! However, teabagwoman, such is the wealth of experience on here, I’ve nothing to add except perhaps one which, to me, is the most difficult because it’s mental - don’t be an impatient patient. You will not be up and running in a few weeks or even perhaps in two or three months. You will most probably be pain free in your new hip, but your muscles around it & in other parts have taken a real hammering over the time your own hip was deteriorating and they need time to come to terms with their new role in your mobility. Keep up with the exercises and make haste slowly as my old granny used to say.

I am not clear what you mean about GN notifying you about posts on the thread Grammargran.
I have to look at the thread to see if there are any new posts. Or am I missing something? It’s not unknown. smile

I use a sheet under the quilt and have no problem with it. In fact if BIG if, it’s hot I can pull the quilt back and still have the sheet over me.
Washed bedding today, top sheet, bottom sheet pillow cases and the quilt is still on the bed in its cover.
Absolutely hate having to get the king quilt cover back on. It’s a real struggle, I am short and I can end up caught up inside it. smile

I am notified on my local Netdoor but never on GN. I have to check to see if anybody has commented GN.

Had good news today - I am into the system and have an appointment to see a surgeon in late July.

Grammargran, you’re too right, I will find it difficult to be a patient patient, but I’ll do my best. I’ll get my daughter to pop over and change my bed as I can rely on her to put a proper foot pleat in the top sheet. I’m another one who always uses one so as not to have to keep changing the duvet cover. I’m so glad this thread is here, it reduced the unknowns.

Good news teabagwoman, time will fly by.

Redcar Thu 08-May-25 16:22:22

That’s good news*teabagwoman*, July will soon be here!
I use a top sheet between me and the duvet in the summer to save the hassle of changing the duvet cover too frequently.

teabagwomann we try to give helpful tips without spending much money.

Do you have a garden? Mowing the grass will be off limits for a few months. Sometimes, it is useful to exercise in the garden rather than in the great outdoors if you are on your own.

Post-op, it is easier to wear nightdresses than pyjamas and skirts instead of trousers unless your tour trousers are very loose-fitting.

grammargran Thu 08-May-25 23:42:58

Silverlining and Charleygirl if you go to the top of the thread, just above the original OP comment or question, on the right hand side there’s an orange box which says “watch this thread” which you can tap on. If you’re lucky, GN will then send you an email every time there’s a new comment on that thread - or not! At least, this orange box shows up in my iPad but not on my iPhone - weird!

Sorry folks but I’m back with another question. How swollen is my foot likely to be after my hip op? I already have to wear extra wide shoes due to the arthritis in my feet and am wondering what I can get that’s even larger.

Charleygirl5 Fri 09-May-25 09:09:28

grammargran it has worked once, with luck it will work again.

teabagwoman I'm sorry, but that is not a question I can answer as I have not had a hip replaced. I personally would not be spending money on something that should be temporary.

Exerises and elevation should reduce swelling.

Charleygirl5 Fri 09-May-25 09:10:21

Even exercises.

grammargran Fri 09-May-25 09:34:57

Teabagwoman, my foot was pretty swollen for several weeks after my THR. As we’re coming into the summer months, why don’t you invest in a good pair of sandals (Hotter?) that have adjustable Velcro straps all over the place? As the swelling goes down, so you could make them smaller and still wearable.

Charleygirl glad the suggestion worked, but it’s not foolproof - be warned!

Charleygirl5 Fri 09-May-25 09:46:19

Sillu me expecting it to work twice.

silverlining48 Fri 09-May-25 10:31:53

Teabagwoman your feet may swell a bit because of summer weather, mine did, but I mostly wore trainers, but shoes with velcro straps will work. Avoid backless shoes because you don’t want to risk a trip.

Redcar Fri 09-May-25 10:33:34

teabagwoman both my feet and legs were very swollen after my first hip replacement (think tree trunks) and took months to go down I wore slippers to go home in, then progressed to trainers with elastic laces after a few days
. Not as bad after the second hip replacement but my feet are still a bit puffy. They improve after a night’s rest, but I long to see my bony feet again! My doctor has suggested compression stockings or a diuretic. I’m hoping to improve things with plenty of water, exercise and elevation in the evenings!

teabagwoman Fri 09-May-25 13:44:21

Thanks ladies, I shall have to do some thinking and shopping.

Charleygirl5 Fri 09-May-25 13:59:13

teabagwoman slippers must also have backs. You cannot slop around as I do at present.

It is difficult to get knickers, socks, or tights on for me anyway as I cannot manage the gadget for putting on socks.

silverlining48 Fri 09-May-25 14:34:51

I used to use the lassoo method of putting knickers on, still do to an extent. Never managed my sock putter onna either, and never tried putting on tights.

The aids I saw and mentioned in Aldi the other day are well worth looking at, especially the grabber/long handled shoe horn/ combined with a few more tricks was splendid value at about £15.

Bea65 Fri 09-May-25 14:44:29

My consultant has cancelled Monday’s clinic so have another wk to go to question why my knee on operated leg is still inflamed and stinging at night which wakes me up and can’t get back to sleep.. really don’t want to take additional pain meds🙁
On a positive note, had a luxury pedicure today and hopefully my ingrowing big toe nail issue is finally resolved 🤞

Nannytopsy Fri 09-May-25 17:02:10

Bea65 I took the pain relief because you can exercise more when you are comfortable and that helps healing. Also I took painkillers at night in order to sleep. You will feel more human. They will not harm you and you can give them up when you don’t need to take them any longer.

grammargran Fri 09-May-25 17:06:50

Grabbers help with knickers, trousers, anything that needs to be pulled up (apart from socks) although I have to say I find the socks gadget always worked. Haven’t tried tights in several years!

Redcar Fri 09-May-25 17:27:28

I couldn’t get on with the socks gadget, it always left my socks stranded half way along my foot! I did have a gadget to help get knickers and trousers on, it was a bit like men’s braces, and clipped to front and back of the garment and pulled up easily. I think it came from Amazon.
