{Redcar} yes have to restart physio on Tuesday but not looking forward to it

I don’t think you’re being fanciful at all.. I’ve noticed my right wrist joint is aching and my left shoulder which I’ve had a previous arthroscopic surgery .. think it’s all related to the trauma of surgery??🤷‍♀️

grammargran Sat 31-May-25 15:39:52

Redcar and Bea, I've notice a contant achey muscle around my right shoulder and upper arm which I'm convinced has arisen from the use of the stick since my left hip was replaced last November and where I leaned so heavily on it in the early months. I'm sure I didn't have it before & it's overuse. Hopefully, it will gradually wear off, but when I'm tired or have walked a bit too much, I find myself leaning into it again.

Bea65 Sat 31-May-25 16:40:21

GRAMMARGRAN of course I’m leaning and using the left crutch more so that’s possibly why my shoulder is aching 🤔

grammargran Sat 31-May-25 18:01:37

Especially if you’ve had previous surgery on it, Bea, I think it’s highly likely or, at the very least, not helping!

susytish Sat 31-May-25 18:33:05

I contacted the surgeons secretary and told him how I was feeling on the anti-coagulant tablets, Apixaban.
He checked and said it was ok to stop them, as I was having side-effects.
I did on Wednesday but still feeling nauseous. I am hoping it is coming off the tablets making me feel like this and not something else

silverlining48 Sat 31-May-25 20:50:09

It may take a day or two Susytish. Did you just stop on Wednesday or cut down slowly?

susytish Sat 31-May-25 21:00:39

I was just told just stop taking them if they are giving you side-effectsg.
I have read it is ok to stop them, rather than cut down.
So as you say, I will give it another day or two. Thank you.

silverlining48 Sat 31-May-25 21:15:11

Keep in touch Susytish . Am sure you will feel better soon.

Before having a new knee did anyone use a tens machine? My osteopath uses something similar to one and I find it very relaxing. I tried to do a walk with my dog walking group today and couldn’t so I’m resigned to the fact that I must have a TKR.

cornergran Sun 01-Jun-25 00:34:49

A TENS machine didn’t help with pain from my knee, a TKR certainly has.

Having said that I do use a TENS for spinal pain, it often reduces pain to a manageable level, I find it not consistent though. .

In my view TENS is worth trying for pain relief. If can be more effective if a professional has advised on pad placement. Just remember TENS won’t fix anything and pain reduction is temporary. A TKR is a fix but bear in mind referral routes can be lengthy. Best not to leave it too long.

Redcar Sun 01-Jun-25 08:00:50

I haven’t tried a TENS machine on my back, I’ll ask the physiotherapist if she thinks it would help. A heated pad helps, but best if I’m sitting. The ones you stick on your body irritate my skin so I can’t use those.

susytish Mon 02-Jun-25 15:00:23

silverlining48 I am feeling better, nausea has gone at last. Follow-up appointment with surgeon Friday 13th, then first, and maybe only appointment with the physio at the hospital.
So slowly getting there!

silverlining48 Mon 02-Jun-25 17:37:23

Good good susy. You are on your way.
In this area we can self refer to an nhs physio. I have done this twice and been seen very quickly. Might be worth asking. Especially if you think you will only get one physio appointment. .

I've finally asked for a telephone appointment with my doctor. And a local person who I've been internet friends with for years is going to come round to give me advice about adapting my house post op.

silverlining48 Mon 02-Jun-25 18:13:07

Sorry you couldn’t manage the walk maybee but at least it helped you to come to a decision about an operation.
Hope the appointment goes well and you are put on the list. Once you are check regularly about cancellations etc in case you can get an earlier date.
You can ask your surgery if you have a choice of venues and then check their waiting lists, some may be shorter than others.
As to changes in your home you could ask for an OT assessment, they always used to do this but times are changing.

MayBee70 Mon 02-Jun-25 19:26:11

I’d seen an osteopath. Used Flexiseq, Voltarol. Even took some Co dydramol. Took my walking poles. And still struggled to walk.

MayBee70 Tue 03-Jun-25 20:26:03

Had an email from my surgery. Will have a telephone consultation in a day or so. Need to write down what I need to tell them. I’m still not sure that it’s my knee that’s stopping me from walking. I thought my osteopath would be able to look at my overall posture and strange gait when I walk and pin point what the problem is. I do feel as if I’m slightly bonkers to be honest as I can’t even explain what the problem is. I’m not in any pain other than sometimes feeling as if someone is stabbing a knife into the inside of my knee. I ache when I walk as my body is so stiff and tense. No pain at all when I’m resting. Very stiff if I sit down for a while after I’ve been trying to walk outside. I might contact versus arthritis after I’ve spoken to my surgery; don’t want to be on the phone if the surgery phone me. I think I’d be better off seeing a physiotherapist rather than an osteopath.Strangely enough, the arthritis I have in my hand which is quite painful has been non existent recently. I am questioning my own sanity ( not for the first time!).

Charleygirl5 Tue 03-Jun-25 23:00:01

Do you have any joint pain at night, specifically in that knee?

MayBee70 Wed 04-Jun-25 00:25:29

No. There’s no sideways movement with it, though, so it hurts suddenly if I take a wrong step. And it’s sore if I walk for half an hour or so although I’m not even attempting to do that now.My hip has been a bit sore since I saw the osteopath, though, so I might cancel my next appointment.

grammargran Wed 04-Jun-25 08:09:54

MayBee you said in an earlier post that you found the osteopath and the TENS machine quite relaxing so even though your hip is sore, is it worth cancelling your appointment? Your knee's definitely not right, that's for sure!

MayBee70 Wed 04-Jun-25 22:27:21

I am going to cancel it.Because he helped me to walk again 15 or so years ago I was hoping for the same result this time. I also thought that he would be able to pinpoint exactly where the main problem was. I would also feel better if I saw a physiotherapist who would give me exercises to do so I would feel more proactive. Will hopefully get a phone call from my doctors tomorrow.

cornergran Wed 04-Jun-25 22:49:52

While understanding the need to feel you’re having some control by an exercise programme do give things adequate time to have an impact maybee.

There is definitely an issue somewhere, perhaps your knee perhaps a referred pain. You must be more than frustrated with the situation. I can’t suggest anything helpful other than keep moving as much as you can and definitely don’t overdo any exercise you are given. That’s as bad as doing nothing.

I’m beginning to think I was more than fortunate with my TKR experience although I laugh sometimes when a medic, the most recent a pain clinic consultant, asks if I do my exercises. I have them for knees, muscle strength in legs, lumbar spine, cervical spine, shoulders and hands along with a raft of Mindfulness exercises. I’d do nothing else if I did them all every day!

Constant pain is so debilitating and the effects poorly understood, no wonder you’re finding life difficult. I hope you can rest well tonight and you get that call from the GP soon.

So last night/early morning had to put E-blanket on..felt cold and hands were quite stiff and of course the knee stings...then I started to get right side groin pain...
Its 10 weeks now since the THR so should I start getting a new pain??
Have physio on Monday and seeing the consultant Thursday to receive the knee x-ray results..would like to know if anyone had this groin pain?

grammargran Thu 05-Jun-25 15:59:09

"Bea* can't remember specific groin pain but at 10 weeks I was still far from bonding with my new hip & very stiff. It's still early days, gal, don't be surprised at anything!

Bea65 Thu 05-Jun-25 19:17:14

My hip area feels quite normal - not stiff and the scar line is neat and almost healed.. no pain there but why I’ve got groin ache ?
Was surprised when I saw the length of the titanium rod - seemed quite a bit longer than my original thigh bone.. amazing pic
