What do people find is the best supplement for arthritis. I’m getting creakier day by day. Just had it diagnosed now in my feet! I’m only 70 and want to be as active as possible but there is so much out there I don’t know what to try . Help please

Hi. I saw a consultant yesterday. She is a hand specialist and I have a lot of pain in my thumb joints and hands in general. She has suggested an appointment with a hand therapist to learn some techniques to help avoid the pain. She also told me to take 1000mg of glucosamine everyday with or without chondroitin. I’m off to the shops to get some! Apparently it doesn’t help everyone but is worth a try as a significant number of patients have found it helpful. The consultant feels that this is the only supplement which is worth trying. I should add that I have arthritis in other parts of my body as well. I hope this is helpful.

Thank you aonk, I shall give that a try.

I have arthritis in one ankle at the moment and the GP has recommended the Musculuskeletal clinic attached to our surgery for physiotherapy. No supplements suggested, just exercises.

I used to take glucosamine but stopped as I have Dupuytrans in my hand and it can exacerbate it. I went on a one day course at the hand clinic because of arthritis in my thumb joints; although, to be honest, they didn’t give me any advice that I wasn’t doing anyway they did give me some very simple exercises that really work. I certainly do them whenever my hand hursts and should really do them all the time. I do take turmeric but only because I’m not on blood thinners. Vit D and magnesium. I have some fingerless gloves that I bought from Boots that have been very helpful ( annoyingly I’m away from home and have forgotten to pack them). When I rub Voltarol on my arthritic knee I leave it on my hand ( but you mustn’t expose the skin to the sun). I used to take cod liver oil and I might start taking it again.

My rheumatologist advised against glucosamine and chondroitin as her view was research didn’t support its use, she’s not a fan of supplements, says it’s just more stuff to tax our kidneys and liver. (She’s fantastic and a bit scary

I agree with above

Crocheting helps me, physio says how you move your hand making the stitches is good exercise.

My vet advised me to get a supplement for my dog's arthritis in his "wrists," so he's on glucosamine/chondroitin 🐕

Husband takes Tumeric with Curcumin and Black Pepper (capsules) and swears by it. He is a guitarist and if he runs out his finger and thumb joints are much worse.

A Chinese herbalist told me that a tablespoon each of cider vinegar and honey in hot water is a good combination to help joints; he said the Chinese philosophy is to keep the healthy well, not wait until they are ill, so much Chinese food contains ingredients that are good for well being. Vinegar and honey is the basis for an authentic sweet and sour sauce. It's quite a pleasant drink.

Why not try and anti-inflammatory diet for a while. It might help. It helped me. Lots of information online to guide you with it.

The same thing happened to me but I managed to stop the progress with a short course of radiotherapy, but I stopped the glucosamine and collagen supplements. The only thing I take now is vit D in the winter and milk thistle to support my liver as I drink alcohol.

Mine also said don’t bother. No research.

The old fashioned, oily fish 2 or 3 times a week.

MayBee70 Sat 13-Sept-25 14:09:00

I was going to have radiotherapy on my feet but decided on a watching brief along with taking turmeric and, thankfully it didn’t progress ( touch wood my fingers haven’t contracted). I did an exclusion diet years ago and felt really good on it but it was hard to stick to. I’ve worn trainers with support insoles for years now after realising that flat shoes gave me plantar fasciitis.

i have arthritis in both hands and it severely limits what i can do. so i have a steroid injection into my thumb joint every four months. it doesn't stop the pain but it significantly lowers it. my gp is happy to do it for me thank goodness.
my last injection was on tuesday and now i can do things i couldn't do on monday and it seems all my little aches and pains are eased.
before my knee replacements i had steroid injections into my knee joint and it helped then too.

Qwerty Sat 13-Sept-25 14:23:22

I saw a consultant recently and he suggested Turmeric, which I do take. He said it might help my joints last a bit longer before steroid injections then joint replacement surgeries.

KnittyNannie Sat 13-Sept-25 15:19:41

I’ve taken turmeric and black pepper tablets for years. My hands were very painful, especially my thumb joints. I don’t have pain now, though my fingers are still a bit misshapen.

I started taking glucosamine chondroitin for arthritus in my hands some years ago.
The leaflet from the hospital actually recommended it which surprised me as the medics are in two camps about its effectiveness.

All I can say is that it works for me. I don't buy it in the supermarkets as the strength is usually very low.

Grandmaofone Sat 13-Sept-25 15:36:16

theworriedwell that’s interesting, thanks,
Im going to adopt this as exercise and hopefully
baby blanket

theworriedwell Sat 13-Sept-25 15:41:17

BlueBelle Sat 13-Sept-25 15:46:51
