Acid Reflux

I made myself an edam toastie the other night with lots of cheese. By bedtime I was suffering the most horrible acid reflux and did not sleep a wink. Couldn't eat anything yesterday and went to bed with the same again. By midnight I was down at A &E the pain was so bad and I couldn't even keep water down. Anyhow, the doctors put me on pantoprazole drip and it finally went away. Great to wake up today and be acid reflux free again. Hope it is going to last. Anyone else with something similar?

Nothing like as extreme as what you’ve experienced, but I take a couple of Rennies and sit up more in bed in an attempt to stop the acid rising. It seems to work for me. Cheese is not the best food to eat pre-bedtime!

Nothing as extreme as that. My bed is now on 4” risers at the head end and I take 10ml of Gaviscon Advance before I go to bed. I am very careful about the amount of fat I eat. I hope you never have such a frightening experience again.

I have awful reflux, have had it for years, and take omeprazole on prescription and Rennies or gaviscon too when it is really bad.
I avoid eating late at night, avoid soup at any time, don’t eat spicy food or too many citrus fruits, also fizzy drinks in general.
Would cut out late suppers and make your midday meal the biggest meal of the day as opposed to dinner which you should keep light.
Hope you don’t have a recurrence.
Xx

I forgot to mention that I use those, too. I do tend to slide down the bed a bit because of them, but that’s possibly because I don’t weigh very much!

Has peppermint tea ever helped you to cope with it?

I use ginger tea. That seems to help. Been looking more into diet and it seems that I like acidic food so I'll need to take a look at more alkaline foods and not eat close to bedtime but allow myself 3 hours.

Yes to an extreme. The pain radiated into the left arm to the shoulder and lasted two hours or so and extreme. It turned out that
I had an 8cm hiatus hernia with 80% of my stomach through the hernia into the chest cavity. I had to have an operation called a fundoplication. Recovery was harsh but .i am now five months post op and have no heartburn anymore. It was really worth it for my quality of life now.

I used to get reflux most days. A few days after taking Levothyroxine for my underactive thyroid, the reflux stopped as did my carpal tunnel symptoms!

I thought peppermint tea would be good, our practice nurse said no. She said peppermint relaxes the opening to your stomach, or some such thing, allowing more acid to come up.
I think is good for wind.

My DH suffers appallingly with silent reflux, which gives him horrendous coughing spasm with a post natal drip. Since his brain bleed his right side is paralysed and when je coughs at night his right leg flies into the air and lands in a painful position. I have to get up and haul it back beside the other one and wedge it with pillows. As this can happen up to six times a night, we are not getting much sleep! So far on lansoprazole three a day, Mometasone steroid nasal spray twice a day and gaviscon 20 mg four times a day, and he is still coughing!

I had the camera down the throat, hiatus hernia, I take Famotidine on prescription, Gaviscon advance at bedtime. Very occasional it’s bad, so I take omeprazole, just one dose.

I have a sliding hiatus hernia and for several years Lanzoprazole has kept on top of it. Can pretty much eat anything but avoid pastry.

The past couple of months I have had bad acid reflux.
Gaviscon is by my bedside now at night and I still take the Lanz. In the morning. I made a lovely roasted veggie tray bake a few nights ago and OMG did I suffer all night.
