One thing after another

I'm having a bit of a bad time this Christmas and New Year. First it was a really nasty, seemingly everlasting cold, the remnants of which are still around after nearly 3 weeks and then on Friday my stomach exploded both upwards and downwards for several hours. I had been feeling vaguely nauseous for a couple of days but wasn't expecting that! I am still uncomfortable. I managed some soup today but I'm not hungry. I am trying to drink enough liquids to make up for the loss. I can think of better ways to lose weight!
So many nasty bugs around at the moment.

Wishing Aely and all who are poorly, a speedy recovery. I’m taking no chances - am staying wrapped up and warm, in a nice warm house. I have enough food in the fridge and freezer .

I've never had a food delivery in my life! Not even a pizza. I wouldn't know where to start.

Thankfully, I am feeling much better today. I woke up with no nausea and feeling refreshed after 8 hours sleep instead of exhausted after 12. I would have been fit enough to pop out, I think, but the snow had arrived and the roads and pavements were icy so I toasted crispy bread, opened the last tin of soup and this evening was able to eat my first proper meal for several days, having dug a chicken leg out of the freezer. Luckily I have useable spuds and veggies. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be better.

Well, now is your time to learn how to do it. Look at the website for the supermarket of your choice and follow the instructions. Old dogs can be taught new tricks.

I have yet to shop online, but I am sure I will be able to sort it out should ever I need to do so.

I'm glad you've started to feel better Aely. My husband has actually gone to the Drs shock

I soon gave up the idea of trying out supermarket home deliveries when I investigated it recently. I was there thinking "Don't suppose they'll deliver today - but I should have a choice of slots for tomorrow" and was shocked to see I'd have to shop and buy days away from when I'd decided to do so.

I am growing a bit of food in my garden - which helps. But what saved the day when I felt too ill a couple of times was to go onto Amazon groceries section. Not the same as buying from the shops and they only liaise with one supermarket and it's one that won't deliver to my area. But I still managed - albeit the bread was dearer than my artisan bread I buy in person, I had to get butter in those little hotel guest sizes (so paying noticeably more for conventional butter than my organic butter!) and, thankfully, there are plant milks I like (so I had them instead of dairy milk). But I was certainly able to get plant milks, real coffee, canned fruit, canned fish and those little pre-cooked packets of rice and other grains - so I managed to cope for that few days. A noticeable amount of the food they sell turns up the next day - so it's there quite quickly then.

A rule of thumb too for managing re having enough food in is one I had to adopt when I moved from southern England and my supermarket was Waitrose to Wales (Tesco and budget supermarkets and the weather is worse than I'm used to and so I don't go out in it) was:

- I swopped my tall fridge/freezer to a fridge that's taller than me and a freezer that's even taller than that and I keep that freezer well stocked-up.

- It's part of why I grow a bit of food in my garden now I'm here.

- I've got a walk-in larder and I keep that very well stocked-up too.

The combination of many fewer shopping opportunities, weather is too bad to go out in sometimes (in the opinion of a Southerner like me at any rate) and not being able to buy some stuff I'm used to unless I buy it online has meant there are numerous times I'm glad I made sure I have all that extra food stored (compared to what I've been used to doing). Not forgetting there aren't any decent takeaways yet in case of emergency either - my fingers being crossed for a couple of decent ones to start up here.....as available food to buy has improved noticeably since I moved here....so I might get lucky at some point...

So yep - if on one's own then stock up - a lot....just in case.

Cariad, your house sounds so lovely and large. Can I move in, please? Room for a fridge, separate freezer AND a walk in Pantry?! Wow. Do you also have room for a dining room table in your living area? I would love that.

When I moved here (council) with my kids, my fridge freezer sat by the back door {kitchen is at the front}. Still, the exercise involved in getting the milk for my cuppa probably did me good. When I bought, I was able to remove the main storage cupboard in the kitchen, which was floor to ceiling and move my fridge freezer into my kitchen. But I lost 1/3rd of my kitchen storage in doing so. Luckily, the kids had gone by then, so just me. No pantry, walk in or otherwise. Another cupboard had already gone when they installed central heating, to make room for the boiler.

Nearest take-away is a bus ride away, but we did get an Aldi nearby two years ago. So convenient not having to go into what passes for a town centre when I need milk. Unfortunately I can't use it if it is icy as I have to go up one steep slope and down another, but it is great in the Summer.

Happy to say I am now ok, even got to my execise class this morning, but my apologies go to my daughter who caught my vomiting bug and is still feeling a bit crook.

Agree uber eats etc a life saver when I had pneumonia recently and no energy
What’s going on with all these bugs ?
I try to eat healthily, take vitamins ,exercise etc but these things still seem to catch us out
The hospitals are overrun this winter
I think the grandchildren are often the source looking into various booster vaccinations eg RSV and pneumonia even if private
