A health warning for people as stupid as me.

Following a bad cold from before Christmas, it never really got better, especially the cough, like lots of us had.
I began to experience breathlessness which just grew worse and worse. I started to struggle for breath and my heartbeat went completely mad.
This is where I made my mistake. - I DIDN'T TELL ANYONE .
Eventually my family noticed and I ended up in A&E very ill. I would have died within 24 hours they said.
So a week in hospital, lots of treatment and drugs and I am now home, resting because pneumonia takes six weeks to recover from.
So this is a message for anyone as stupid as me. Tell someone.
Don't hide it because you, like me, didn't want to make a fuss.

Oh dear Henetha - so sorry to hear and thanks for the warning . I thing we all tend to keep things away from family and friends, because we don’t want to bother them. I know I’m like that …

So glad you’re now getting better, it must have been very scary for you and your family. Take good care of yourself from now on.

Hi Hethetha -
What a horrible fright you had and thank the Lord you are better .Pneumonia takes several months in which to fully recover .
I also hope that you've had the anti pneumonia jab .
Next time you get a cold look out for not recovering quickly -coughing a great deal and feeling breathless .
And nip it in the bud with antibiotics and steroids.
Get Well soon 💐

henetha I hope you are on the mend after that awful experience. Thanks for the warning, it is the kind of stupid thing I would do because I "didn't want to bother anyone".

My eye problems are worse because I didn't seek medical help about 10 years ago.

henetha what a fright you had and I'm glad you told your family and got to hospital in time.

The problem is that we don't want to make a fuss, think we'll get better and also are reluctant to go into hospital nowadays.

However, it sounds as if you were well cared for in there, thank goodness. I hope you're recovering well now, take care.

Get well soon henetha. Thank you for reminding us that sometimes we just shouldn’t keep going.

I'm glad you are on the mend.

I was also in hospital via A and E as couldn't talk anymore as so short of Oxygen, coughing, but hadn't left it as long, I rung 111, 4 days in.

But am telling posters this for a spot of advice

You can get a really easy to use device you pop on your finger that measures your Oxygen Levels (uses batteries so no charging up) so you know if they are too low very easily - and act. My doctors sister brought me one, ask a health professional how to use, and you will know when its too low.

"Fingertip Pulse Oximeter" BLT Model M70B

I mean my Doctor Sister, not doctor's sister!

As someone asked previously, had you been vaccinated? If not, do so.

I’m so pleased that you are recovering Henetha. It must have been very scary for you.

I can understand the “plodding on” aspect - I think many of us do this as we don’t want to make a fuss, or think “it’s only a cold, usual at this time of year”, etc, etc. We are constantly being told how overstretched the NHS is, aren’t we and I think we think what we have is trivial and will get better, so no need to make a nuisance of ourselves.

I think what your situation highlights, though, is that any cough, breathlessness, etc that doesn’t go away after a few days should be investigated further.

Take good care of yourself, Henetha, have plenty of rest and I hope it won’t be long before you are back to normal 💐.

This must have been so very frightening for you henetha.

Very pleased you are now over the worst.
Take it easy now until you are fully recovered.

It's not always easy to ask for help so this is a lesson we all need to learn from. Thank you.

Hi everyone. I'm feeling better this morning. Thanks to all of you for your good wishes etc. I'm really touched at your kindness.
I definitely will get an Oximeter.
No, I don't think I'd had a pneumonia jab. I'll ask if I can have one now. I'm seeing a doctor on Wednesday.

Luckygirl3 Sat 31-Jan-26 10:35:17

Good advice. Be well quickly.

Fallingstar Sat 31-Jan-26 12:28:25

You are not stupid henetha, am sure some of us are guilty of trying to battle on regardless, my old dad’s advice was ‘walk it off’ if we ever got ill. But I think we forget our age and how an illness we weathered when younger could now be potentially very serious indeed.
So glad you are now recovering. A bit of a nudge for all of us. 😔

AGAA4 Sat 31-Jan-26 13:58:48

Glad you are feeling better henetha. I need to book in for a pneumonia jab. Keep putting it off.
