Feeling miserable, but it will pass

I am just back from the dentist. 5 injections, and a denture fitted. I would like a virtual handhold please. I know I am a wimp. I have a mouth full of blood, and I can't eat anything much.

I also have to practise tonight , taking the denture out and putting it back in again.

Has anyone else gone through this?

Thank you so much you’re both very kind. 24 hours to go!!

Are you absolutely sure that you have to put the dentures in place so soon?
Healing from an extraction takes time and you must take a lot of care of yourself and keeping the sockets clean and giving yourself time and space to heal.
You absolutely dont want 'dry socket' or infection. So let the salt water rinse just settle on the socket. You dont want to swill it round and spit. You have let it settle and then trickle or you will dislodge the start of the coagulation needed for repair. Good luck my friend, 5 extractions in one go is a big deal! You are definately NOT a wimp.

I have had a partial denture since I was a young girl.
Stepmother didn’t encourage teeth brushing.

For the last ten years I’ve had a metal denture.
It took a lot of adjustments to get the fit right, but I hardly know I have it.
I would give anything to have all my own teeth now.
And I always envy other peoples teeth that look nice.

Luckily, I don’t need a bottom set, but most of my natural teeth are wonky.

I had 4 front teeth out 2 weeks ago and an immediate partial denture fitted. I look like Dracula’s mother when I take it out and feel quite depressed. I wish I’d stuck with my own loose teeth but there’s no going back. I hope they become second nature soon.

You poor thing. It will pass honestly... hang on to the fact that one day you will look back on all this. Take care.

I've just returned from dentist having had root canal treatment. Not a pleasant experience but the dentist and his assistant made me as comfortable as they could. Numbness wearing off now so it's time for Ibuprofen, sofa and my library book. Upside is I get to save a tooth!

Any dentistry at all and you have my sympathy. Horrible experience but you're over the worst of it now so you've done really well. Now you have to take it easy, yes practise as you've been told but look after yourself, warm drinks or soup, whatever you feel you can manage and painkillers. Get some rest and hopefully you'll feel a lot brighter in the morning. Take care.

I can hardly read this thread as it brings back the misery endured at various dentists during my life. Denture... hell.
But sending sympathy to all fellow sufferers.

You have my sympathy. I had a bungled extraction last year. Broken tooth left in with an abscess. Went on for months.
I think I will need sedating for any more treatment…

Thank you 1960sRelic. I’m leaving this thread for now. I’m trying to stay positive smile

I too have had some horrible dental experiences and got to have a back tooth out at the hospital in a couple of weeks time local anaesthetic and I m xxxxxxx it already

I recommend salt water mouth wash, half Tspn of salt in 8oz of boiled cooled water , 3/4 times a day to stop infection. Hope fully with the regular paracetamol you are still feeling a bit better. It will take a few week to heal, at first I could only keep my dentures in a few hours but it does gradually get easier and you forget about them. The only thing I miss is eating an apple whole, I have to keep them now and cut into quarters.

I had four wisdom teeth removed and felt rough for days, so can’t imagine what you’re feeling. Sending best wishes and hope everything settles down soon and the end result is worth it. 💐

5 injections, how many extractions? Don't have a plate but was a registered surgery assistant. Take plate out, give mouth a very gentle rinse and plate of course and
depending plate reinsert. The mouth is one of the two quickest healing areas of the body so even in a few days you will notice the difference. Paracetamol for pain. Hope all is well when everything settles.

I had to have all but 3 teeth out in one procedure (IV sedation) and go without teeth for 6 weeks.
Please DON'T suck on anything, as this can dislodge the clots which are part of the healing process.
I can't help re immediate denture, removing and replacing, etc but be prepared for several weeks of visits back and forth because the denture will need lots of adjustments as your mouth changes over the coming months.
Not going to sugar coat this - it can be a miserable time but it does ease up as time goes on.
Good luck with it.

Thank you everyone for your replies and your suggestions, which I will take on board.

I am home now and DH has made a great vegetable soup, which we had tonight, and plenty left over for tomorrow.

I'm still feeling a bit woosy. I will have 2 paracetamols before bed.

We had a voicemail this morning from the dentist, asking me to come back in. So DH and I went back. He said he called me back just to see how I was. He helped me with taking the denture out and putting it back in again. ( This kind of care is why we like him so much!)

Many thanks again for your replies.

Four teeth extracted, at the bottom.

Getting dentures was the best thing I ever did, I had 12 teeth extracted (at the dental hospital) in one go: 7 at the top, and 5 lower ones, and came home with two dentures. I remember being terrified of taking them out/putting them back in, but within a few days it had become second nature.
I had previously had a few loose teeth (they also found pockets of infection on several roots), and had been restricted in what I could eat .... I remember crying with joy the first time I ate toast with my new teeth!

Gosh, dentists! My childhood dentist was a nightmare. Back in the late 50s/early 60s, fillings seemed to be the thing. My dentist did them without local anaesthetic. It wasn’t until a school friend mentioned them that I knew they existed. I had to beg every time though. Then we got a lovely dentist in Henley who I carried on seeing even after I moved over an hour away. He retired and I had a lovely local dentist. Private and not cheap, but worth every penny. A few years ago I had to have a tooth out at the hospital as I was on alendronic acid. The dental surgeon was wonderful. Plenty of anaesthetic. He had to take the tooth out in several pieces and I had stitches. Plenty of warm salty water gargles for a few days and all was well. I think I can put up with most things if there are pain killers handy!
