Atorvastatin 20 mg

I have been prescribed Atorvastatin following a blood test showing raised cholesterol. I have a family history of close relatives having strokes and heart problems.
My weight is normal BMI 20 and blood pressure low. I will watch dairy and fats in my diet.

How did GNs find Atorvastatin and did you start on 20mg or 10 mg and then increase slowly?

There is an algorithm when it comes to prescribing a statin and GPs just follow this.

I was on it but had some problems after a number of years (numbness in legs) and was changed to bempedoic acid, a relatively new drug.

I am stuck with these blessed drugs because my liver just makes too much cholesterol in spite of normal weight, no red meat, cheese, milk or eggs for decades.

Luckygirl my mum always had high cholesterol, took no medication and lived to 90

There is familial hypercholestaemia though, in essence not dietary, but hereditary.

And a new study has shown that side-effects from statins were a case of over-reporting & neuroticism about pharmaceuticals.

I would take it & be grateful for it, & if some symptoms arise, that's the time to discuss with GP. I would take like a shot if offered.

I have taken this for ages, as has DH. I am bewildered by attitude of some people to these drugs. We have never had a problem with them and I do think people believe scare stories in the media.

It gave me severe, frequent nosebleeds. I'm on a different statin now and it's fine.

I agree with you.

That’s a sweeping statement and unfair. Many people do have reactions to statins especially muscle pain, I listened to GP’s on radio 4 a few years ago saying this was a common problem and that statins just don’t suit some people.

Some of the cheaper statins first offered can cause pains in limbs, the more expensive ones not so much, I have taken Rosuvastatin for several years, this one I can tolerate, wanted to find one that suited me, any preventative meds I will take to avoid heart attack/stroke, to me it’s a no-brainer …

I've taken that amount for five years and not suffered any side effects. I'm pleased to say my cholesterol is exactly where it should be.

6 years ago, despite having normal cholesterol a consultant neurologist recommended that I took statins as a precaution, and I started on 40mg of Artorvastatin. I knew nothing about statins, and he told me not to read Google!
For the first time in my life I was constipated and my GP reduced the dose to 20mg which made no difference, and I came off it.
My ratio had dropped from 3.5 to 1.8 during the 6 months.

tanith Sat 21-Mar-26 19:13:09

Taken it 20mg for a few years with no problems.

My Mum took this for years and lived to 95! I have also taken it for several years, with no side effects. I know some people have side-effects with statins, but many don't.

"Many" and "some" don't mean the same thing. Statins are probably the most frequently tested drugs in the world. Nearly all research shows that it is only a small percent of people who have side effects.

My bad cholesterol went up after having my gallbladder removed. I was prescribed atorvastatin 15mg. Have had one surprising side effect. The knee pain I have suffered for 3 years has decreased dramatically and I no longer need to take ibuprofen at bedtime. So all is good.

HS1 been taking 20mg Atorvastatin for over a year as I have slight furring in my right artery and taking it to prevent further build up . Recently had fasting blood test. I always have fasting blood test as I feel it gives best results and drink pint of water before leaving home . Doesn't matter if I need the loo before I go the water has increased my blood .

Last year my cholesterol was 4.4 this year 3.5 . For over 10 years I have had low but stable sodium levels but this year my sodium levels where in the normal range . I can only assume the tablet has helped with my sodium levels which I am glad of . Not had any side effects. I have PAF and born with hole in the side of my heart .

I’ve been taking Atorvastatin for 7 years now, no side effects at all.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 22-Mar-26 08:20:51

I collected my prescription and will start today.
Those who take Atorvastatin do you take it at night or early evening? And with food?

tanith Sun 22-Mar-26 08:30:27

I take mine after my evening meal between 6 or 7.
