Does anyone, living alone, have an Amerzon Alexa, if so do you like it?
I ask because I am thinking of getting one so if I suddenly feel very ill it would phone one of my contacts.

Yes I have several around the house.
I use them for many things, checking the time/temperature, making lists, asking questions, playing the radio/music etc.

I'm sure you will find many uses for it if you do decide to get one.

I'm not certain but I think it will only contact some else if they also have an Amazon Alexa. If you are buying it simply for this purpose you need to check if it is really what you need.

.....someone else.......

If the person is in your contacts on your mobile phone Alexi will ring that person. I just tried it to be sure.

I have several round the house and ask all sorts of questions.

I tried with Alexa but something wasn't right with the connection. I think it was my wi fi. My daughter couldn't set it up, not could a computer man. He said it was my BT router's fault. I couldn't deal with it at the time, gave up and sent it back, although would like to try again really.

As you live alone I suggest you get a younger person who's familiar with Alexa to help you set it up, only because you might come across something unfamiliar with the settings and get stuck.

We also have several, it’s so easy to request music or a particular radio station. We have an Echo Show that does amazing things including making video calls and watch streamed videos. It also shows who is at the door via the Ring doorbell. Very useful if you’re in the back of the house.

We have a love/hate relationship with Alexa. She finds my DHs Hampshire accent difficult and he sometimes has to repeat the same instruction several times. He can sometimes be heard yelling at her and threatening to replace her with Google!

I would hate to be without my Alexa. It will call anyone on my contacts. I use it as a timer, a reminder, it reads my audible books, plays my chosen radio station, plays music, connects to Ring and shows who is at my front door, displays recipes, keeps shopping lists, tells silly jokes and many other things.

We have one. We rarely use it.

Charleygirl5 Wed 13-May-26 10:13:53

I am partially sighted so helpful with cooking telling me reminders etc. I have 3 around the house and find her useful if I go to the loo during the night she tells me the time and weather. Don't pay extra for music, 99% is free.

Mainly use her for latest news, alarm and lists. It’s in my bedroom .

MT62 Wed 13-May-26 11:31:15

I didn’t know it could ring people.
Mum has an echo Dot, plays her music.
Use to remind dad to do his insulin.
So could it replace a life pendant, If it can ring a person in the persons contacts?

Charleygirl5 Wed 13-May-26 11:39:27

I personally don't think so. I paid extra so if I fall, apparently the company will know and put the system into practise.

Yes it can, although if you were in a room like a bathroom it might not hear you.

J52 Wed 13-May-26 12:25:28

I’m pretty sure it can’t call 999

Nandalot Wed 13-May-26 12:32:24

Dylis, it doesn’t get on well with my DH’s voice either. It drives him mad. As I am getting older, I find it helpful for reminders. I don’t know how to get it to call people. I just tried to get it to call my daughter’s mobile but it couldn’t do it. Do you have to input the numbers into it’s memory?

Alexa can't call emergency services but it can call someone you have nominated as emergency contact. You just have to ask it to call for help and it will call them.
I have one in my living room, kitchen and bedroom and use them on a daily basis.

Maybe try an Alexa if they were giving them way. But certainly would not pay for one.

Even better get a younger male version of HAL.from the film .2001 A Space Odyssey. Could be the new new man about the house?

I have several and use them all the time. Set timers, reminders, play music, call friends. I also have some Alexa compatible light bulbs in my lamps and can switch them off and on by asking Alexa. Really useful.

kittylester Thu 14-May-26 15:24:25

We have 6 love them but I don't think we use them to their full capability. We use them for music and alarms mostly.

Just found this. These two are free and there is also a paid subscription service called Alexa Together which provides a really comprehensive service.

1. Alexa Emergency Contact (Free)
This feature allows you to designate one person as an emergency contact who will be alerted when you say, "Alexa, call for help" or "Alexa, I need help".
How it Works: When triggered, Alexa attempts to call and text the designated contact.
Setup: Open the Alexa app > Communicate > Contacts > Emergency Contact.
Callback: If the contact misses the initial call, they can use the Alexa app to call back directly to the Echo device.

2. Alexa Care Hub (Free)
Care Hub connects your Alexa account with a loved one's account to provide remote, high-level, and private updates on their activity.
Activity Feeds: Caregivers can see when their relative first uses their Alexa device in the morning and their general activity level throughout the day, without seeing specific requests.
Alerts: You can receive alerts if no activity is detected by a certain time.
Drop In: It enables the "Drop In" feature, allowing family members to immediately connect to their loved one's Echo device to check on them.

I would never have anything like an Alexa. It sits there listening everything that is said. Like Big Brother (sister)

They aren’t that expensive!

Why would it be interested in anything going on in my kitchen?
