Blue Badge renewal denied!

I have had a Blue Badge for the past three years. A few months ago I was told I had to apply for renewal.
I have osteoarthritis and acute lymphoedema in my leg for which I have to wear a thick, full leg, compression stocking. My arthritis is gradually worsening and affecting my mobility. The only way to improve this is to have a knee replacement. However the lymphoedema in my leg increases the risk of severe infection which would place me in worse position.
The Blue Badge renewal has been rejected because they require further medical evidence. I have not seen my Consultant for several years because he can do nothing for me other than replace my knee. Getting an appointment will take a considerable time and is a waste of his time.
I have explained the situation to my council, that osteoarthritis is not going to improve over the three years since I first met the required criteria.
Has anyone else had a renewal rejected?

Yes, mine was rejected last May because “I walk well using the rollator and don’t appear to show signs of pain while walking” I have osteoarthritis in both ankles and feet including toes, osteoporosis in my spine, with several vertebral fractures and can’t walk unaided. The council had outsourced assessments to an independent company and I had to have a face to face assessment by one of their physiotherapists.
dylis would your gp be able to provide the medical evidence that the council require? It might be worth a try.

DD2, a full time wheelchair user for 30 years was refused her renewal this time. She had applied in April, as her badge ran out at the end of June. She sent absolutely everything they asked for, enclosing her ‘certificate for life’ - they even had the cheek to take her payment, but she was told to appeal online then she rang regularly to find out what was going on. We had offered to send pictures of her over the years in her wheelchair and as a last resort, she offered to visit the Council offices in person, but was then told her application/appeal had been successful and she got her new badge 2 days before the old one expired - no explanation, no apology. She doesn’t mind where she parks as she can’t walk, but she needs the extra wide space for her wheelchair.

Appeal. Always appeal. Start the appeal process and pop to your GP and have a consultation re your mobility and then use this appointment as your evidence. If you can afford it get your GP to write you a supporting letter.

I’ve been turned down twice on the grounds that “I’m not disabled enough” 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I do wonder if where you live is a factor. BB probably harder to get in some areas than others.

& yet they dole them out around my way for a bit of anxiety. I know three people who have them for that reason.

I applied to renew my Mum's Blue Badge about 8 weeks ago. She is in a care home now, with a mixed dementia diagnosis, heart failure and countless other problems that mean she can barely hobble now even on a good day, when she needs supervision to safely stand and use her rollator , and on the few occasions we have taken her to hospital in the last six months it has required two of us to get her in and out of the car, so the extra width of disabled spaces is essential.

However, the first renewal application I put in was rejected - they wanted more proof that she was eligible.

I had already sent them the letter about her dementia, a copy from the doctor that listed all her medications, and written in the appropriate boxes why she was taking them (main ones being the heart failure and dementia, and of course described her mobility issues.

I was at a bit of a loss as to what else I could send, but trawling through a pile of hospital letters from the last few years ( most of which were useless as they were almost all just appointment letters that didnt even say what the appointments were about).

But then I found a hospital discharge document from last summer, when Mum still lived in her own home - she had fallen in the house and seemed confused when one of her carers saw her later that day, so she spent a night in hospital before being sent home with 'virtual ward' visits to monitor her for a week. That letter mentioned the fall -quite important, i think - plus confusion, frailty and delirium amongst other things.

I sent a copy of that letter, plus another document I had initially overlooked, which was the letter saying that she had been awarded the higher level of Attendance Allowance last year.
Those did the trick- i had an email the same day saying that the application had now been approved.

To be honest though, I can't help suspecting that they initially turn down all but the most conclusive applications just because a lot of people will give up at that point.
If I hadn't found those two letters, I would have put that to the test by just re-sending one or two of the things I had already provided. It would have cost me nothing to try!
Fortunately, it didnt come to that

Don't you get it automatically with attendance allowance?
I just sent my mums letter in of entitlement ...she is frail...but not immobile ...they didn't need anything else

No, it's not automatic.

My DH had a permanent Blue Badge in France; we have returned to England and he has sent everything off for a UK one. We have translated all the French medical evidence. He has a broken neck secured with titanium rods and cannot move his head without moving his whole body, so very vulnerable when walking, We shall see.

In this area one is not allowed to appeal, and I was refused mine a few years ago. I had a dreadful year but the next, no problem. I no longer drive and haven't bothered to renew it. Too much hassle.
