Mice.

Realised last week that I had mice in my utility room. Cleaned up all the mess and bought one of those plug in mouse deterrents only to find this morning a mouse in the humane trap happily eating it's chocolate button next to the plug in; obviously doesn't work [although had one in my partners flat that seemed to work]. Spoke to a few people who'd had a similar problem [is there a big problem with mice this year; we even had them at work] and they all said they had to resort to poison, having tried all the humane stuff. Anyone else had this problem? I've got a bad feeling they've been in the living room as well, although everything I see now looks like a mouse dropping confused.

So Annobel if you had to take one of the three mousketeers home with you. if you really, really had to. Would it be Richard, Jeremy or the other one?

dontcallmegramps Fri 09-Dec-11 16:12:43

Ah jessM you slipped in on annobel's blindside and tucked it away!

Mice to TG and back to mice sort of...

If mice did use computers ( little ones) what would they call a mouse?

Perhaps they would use one of those roller ball things - operating it with their tails while typing with their paws...

(often thought having a tail would be useful and evolution made a mistake getting rid of ours)

JessM the doting grandma salutes another Hammond afficionado...
Really of the 3 chaps on TG it's only clarkson who is the real wind up merchant - Hammond and May both talk (mostly) a lot of sense.

Annobel Fri 09-Dec-11 16:17:57

JessM, I think James May would fit into my pocket. He has a sense of humour and talks sense a lot of the time.

Bellesnan Fri 09-Dec-11 17:28:22

Green parakeets have taken over the area around Richmond and Kingston - hundreds, if not thousands of them. Silverfoxygran - think you hit the nail on the head - the cat's been catching the mice and upsetting the magpies' larder. Anyway he's looking a bit better today, if a little scruffy!

JessM Fri 09-Dec-11 17:35:47

yeh well for me it would have to be Hammond, it's great being married to a big beefy ex-rower, so he would be a change... if i had to...
JC slightly queasy making from that point of view. Is anyone going to fess up to fancying him???

crimson Fri 09-Dec-11 21:08:59

James May was my friend's 'secret fancy' [there was something a few years back about 'who is your secret fancy?']. The one thing I will say in Clarkson's defence is that he did a series a few years back where he travelled round Europe [sans his chums from TG] that was really interesting and good fun. I think he just behaves how all men really want to behave but daren't, and serves a purpose as a sort of yardstick to make all other men look terribly grown up and sensitive. [My secret fancy was Andrew Marr, but that was before he turned out to be a cad and a bounder.....]

crimson Fri 09-Dec-11 21:10:24

....James May would be brilliant at making mousetraps, possibly even out of leggo...

gracesmum Fri 09-Dec-11 21:28:13

This thread seems to have gone somewhat surreal?

Annobel Fri 09-Dec-11 22:26:00

Friday night: what do you expect? [hgrin]

Annobel Fri 09-Dec-11 22:28:02

grin - sorry, I was still at Halloween grin

Grannylin Fri 09-Dec-11 22:28:38

Don't find any of them attractive in any way. After Masterchef tonight, Michel Roux is my secret fancy. Bet he could make even a mouse taste good!

dontcallmegramps Sat 10-Dec-11 11:32:26

Gracesmum :
the thread would only have gone SURREAL
if crimson announced she had found a FISH caught in one of her traps....

Annobel Sat 10-Dec-11 11:37:21

Grannylin, you can't have him - he's mine! Do you mean a mouse mousse? [groan emoticon]

dontcallmegramps Sat 10-Dec-11 12:05:49

or a mousse made of mouse and moose meat

Grannylin Sat 10-Dec-11 14:41:14

JessM Sat 10-Dec-11 21:22:24

We have a mouse problem in the boiler house - now that the weather is getting colder they're coming in to warm up. I always have four traps set and regularly catch one a night. In desperation I bought a Sonic Repeller -- but the next night I caught three sad So, the moral of this story is - anyone thinking of getting a plug in Repeller - don't bother

bikergran Wed 10-Oct-12 16:10:10

We get the occasional mouse up in the loft...because its a newish house and built of cardboard (well thats what I call it "my cardboard house" sad anyway we did have mice/mouse, so set 2 traps (not the old fashioned ones the new plastic ones...theya re easier to set and don't make you jump as much!!! (we also have 2 cats but obviously too well fed)!!! so a couple of weeks ago..we could hear this clitter clatter up in the loft,,I wondered what on earth it could be and darent go up.as I imagined whatever it was falling down on me as I opened the hatch cover.so my dad came over..the racket was a tiny field mouse trapped in the trap by its leg!! it was a lively little thing and even though it had been struggling a while till my dad came over he/she wasn't for sitting there quietly! we took it outside across the road where the grass was..and let it go....(although about 5 days after there was a dead mouse near my doorstep) hmm

Electronic mice and rat traps work really well and are very humane as the mice or rat is killed instantly.
We exterminated over 20 mice last winter and have had 5 dead in the trap so far this year.
By the time it gets to Christmas/New Year the problem seems to disappear - I assume all the rodents have either died or found a home elsewhere by then.

When I lived in London, we always understood, and believed "You're never more than 2 metres from a rat". Wherever you are!

Probably down to a metre now! grin

Just read right through this thread, as we now have mice in the house. DH came down in the middle of night to find a mouse running over the worktop and leaping into the toaster, where he obviously found the tray of crumbs. He was quickly put out, and we now have absolutely no food lying around e.g. fruit bowl (mouse loved the plums!), toaster. Bought humane traps last week, and, having primed them with chocolate, so far have caught three mice. Box advised taking them at least a quarter of a mile away, so DH gets in the car each morning to take them to a nearby graveyard. Building work going on to extension to side of existing house, and now weather colder mice obviously getting in to enjoy benefits of excellent insulation, but apart from the first little beast, none now go farther than the cupboard under the sink, where the trap is located.
Years ago, in another house, our four cats brought fieldmice in through the cat flap at least once every night, they were rarely eaten but just played with and then forgotten. I'd often come down in the morning to find a mouse sitting shell-shocked in the middle of the floor - and they didn't half bite when we went to release them into safety! Sadly no cats now, but we are seriously considering getting one before the winter sets in.
Son scornful, advised "doing the job properly" and killing mice outright, but at the moment we don't feel like doing this.
