I agree with when about the security lights. Anyone coming to the front or back of our house will find themselves suddenly standing in bright light and that should be enough to deter them. We also have an alarm which does help reduce the cost of home insurance but in order to do so we have to have it serviced every year which probably costs about the same as the saving on insurance.
We live in a low crime area so not many people have house alarms which makes me think that any likely burglar will go to them instead of us!
You can get DIY ones from B&Q which are relatively cheap and very effective but of course won't save on home insurance.
