Carpet Cleaning

I've just had a quote to have my living room and hall/stairs carpet cleaned professionally. Just wondered if anyone had had this done. My main concern is that it might leave a smell afterwards; the carpets are pretty grubby [dog and kids and me not taking my shoes off] but, as far as I know they don't smell. Someone I knew had their car upholstery cleaned and it always had a weird smell afterwards. The guy did say he used a deodorant in the cleaner but that worried me even more.

Yes, it does leave a strong perfumed scent afterwards, which made my dog sneeze continuously for a few hours. I haven't had my stairs shampooed since, but do the sitting room using a hired shampooer with Vax shampoo myself, and that doesn't leave any smell at all. You could always ask them to use a non-perfumed shampoo or provide the botte of Vax, which they sell at B and Q?

Glad you said that because I hate strong smells of any kind. I do have access to a Vax and may try that instead [it's the stairs that are a problem; I put off even vacuuming them because it hurts my back]. I also have a steamer but, again I wanted someone else to do the work. I have an Oreck vacuum and they sell an upright steam cleaner; it might be a better idea to put the money towards buying one of those perhaps. Or i could just have the hall and stairs done; at least I can shut the door on the smell if it bothers me. I think my mind is going back to the awful Shake'n'vac smell from years back [now that did make me sneeze].

And who could forget that advert? grin

I'm glad this thread's been started because I've been meaning to clean our dining room carpet for a while, now the GC have grown out of spilling things so much - the carpet's a sort of wine colour but there are odd darker spots and patches where my DIY cleaning hasn't worked very well!

Yes, I've had my carpets professionally cleaned (some time ago now and I see the sitting room one is looking a bit grubby again blush ), but I don't remember there being any smell afterwards at all. I have an allergic reaction to most 'manufactured' perfumes, so I'm sure I would have remembered.

I hired a cleaner and didn't find it had an after smell. I'm very sensitive to fumes and it didn't affect me.

Anyone had upholstery cleaned? I have two cream sofas...

Oh! It would be really hard to clean a carpet without the help of a vacuum cleaner. I'd rather have a vacuum cleaner than a nanny.. A vacuum that cleans on its own smile

It may depend on the fibres of the carpet. I have a large cream rug regularly cleaned, which is 100% wool and the only smell is damp wool for a couple of hours. The rug always comes up beautifully

I just had my lounge and hall carpet cleaned this week. They did a great job and there were no smells at all.

I've got a Vax Spin Scrub. I suspect that cleaning solution attracts dirt in the long term, so I just use hot water and it's very effective - hoover thoroughly first - carpets always come up looking lovely and clean. I don't know, though, how effective it would be if they were very grubby.

The scent might be a big issue indeed, but it can be concealed when exposing to sunshine for several time after be cleaned.

I had the hall and living room cleaned professionally in the end. Used a company that dried the carpet very quickly and am very pleased with the result. Although the parts most walked on are still a different colour to the other bits [they said before I used them not to expect the carpet to look totally good as new] I now know it's clean. The hall doesn't look quite as good, being a light coloured carpet. No after smell at all and I was delighted with the work. Lesson to be learned is that I realised my living room carpet is very good quality and, after being down for more years than I can remember in a house with children, dogs, cats and then grandchildren, is still good as new, and has been fitted very well [chap from the cleaning company said to stick with the carpet fitter I use as he's never seen a better job done anywhere]. Hall was possibly a bit of a mistake as it's starting to go in places and will need replacing at some point. I know my daughter buys cheap and replaces regularly, but the good quality one is worth it now I know they can clean up really well. wisewoman; I'd be interested to know how much you were charged, because I paid what seemed like an awful lot. I had cheaper quotes but they said the rooms would tale a day or so to dry properly which didn't seem like a good idea with the weather being so damp [could you pm me ?].

had ours done last week (a rug + two sofas & footstool) Clean but no smell!

Stansgran Sun 31-Mar-13 21:06:58

I stick to the same people have the carpets cleaned on a fairly regular basis and they draw the sweet out. The carpets can be walked on almost immediately.

easonlin Fri 28-Feb-14 08:57:34

I am so excited about this A325 robotic vacuum cleaner! I have been wanting to get one for quite a long time

Soutra Fri 28-Feb-14 09:21:57

Too much of a good thing easonlin -reported BTW

Elegran Fri 28-Feb-14 09:33:40

Do people really get as "excited" about vacuum cleaners as the spammers seem to think? They confuse forum chat with advertising blurbs. Talk about overkill.

glammanana Fri 28-Feb-14 09:37:00

Soutra I reported a post just a while ago on this same thread and then realised it was from early last year, shows how observant I am to-day hmm

We're planning to do our carpets in April after decorating and have been recommended Rug Doctor. Checked it out at our local hardware shop and you can hire the machine for £29 for two days/weekend. You pay extra for the shampoo. My OH has been asking round at work and loads of people have been saying how good this is and one person is actually going to buy a RD machine - about £500!!! - because she has dogs and wants to clean regularly. No-one has commented on strange scent afterwards wink

Hi, seen a couple of people had their posts removed due to breaking rules, so not sure if you can recommend a company or not. Not sure what area you are in, but if it's Southeast/Kent I can recommend a company I've been using for years. Price reasonable, quick drying and no smell that I've noticed. I have a dog and he doesn't sneeze or anything afterwards and the carpets can be walked on soon afterwards. Example of price, around £60 for a room 30ft x 12ft. Depends on level of grubbiness but he really can get virtually ANY stains off. On the website one of the carpets as his before and after, is a pic of my rental flat after someone left it in a dreadful state. Though would be new carpets but Wayne managed to bring them up really well. I was astonished. Link is below. Company is Fabric and Fibre based in Bexley but covers a fairly wide area.
