Wall mounted folding tables - has anyone ever had one?

We are moving our girls into the same bedroom and trying to fit the furniture into one room. We are planning to have bunk beds and would like them to have 1 desk each but I would like to maximise the floor space they have so thought 2 wall mounted tables would good. We could then have shelves on the walls where they can put their books etc. My husband really wants 2 proper desks- which there is room for - but it will make a fairly small double bedroom even smaller. He has concerns that a fold down table will be of poor quality. What do you think? Does anyone have a fold down wall mounted table and if so where did you get it? Thanks.

Is the wall that the tables would be fitted on load bearing? If not, you may have problems with the amount of heavy items that the girls place on their tables. As there is space, I personally would prefer the proper desks and you would not be nagging about the heaviness of the load.

I would suspect that the tables would never be folded away as, certainly in our house, there would always be 'stuff' on them and, if you took the 'stuff' off them, where would it live?

Some computer desks are very slim with pull out tables, which then slide back when not in use. Have a 'google' and see if anything fits the bill. X

Thanks very much for your replies. The wall is load bearing but I hadn't thought about how much weight you could put on the table. I thought it would be a good idea to implement the idea of a tidy/empty desk by ensuring that they put their things away once they have finished them but this may be wishful thinking. The idea was for them to put their stuff on shelves on the wall. I will have a look at computer desks.

IloveLindt I think that you are living on Planet Zog if you think that the tables are going to be empty/tidy. You would be fortunate I think if you saw any surface of the tables because of the amount of "stuff" on them.

My "computer desk" is an old easily wiped kitchen table which can be folded if necessary. Everything I have is bulky as I have not moved into the world of laptops or tablets yet. The tables would be a lot cheaper and I am sure that it would be easy to buy a couple in Ikea or maybe John Lewis.

I had a wall-mounted folding table for some years. It was made by Ikea and was extremely sturdy - I used it in the kitchen where it doubled as a work surface, or a place to have a quick breakfast. When not in use, it folded flat against the wall, freeing up extra floor space. I'd recommend it.

Thanks very much sussexpoet.

ikea have table tops all colours all sizes and quiet cheap...you choose your own legs to screw on them very sturdy! I bought a larger table top, and 2 trestles and when we have people for a meal I just pull out the table and trestles from under the stairs smile

I had a folding table for my DD when she was a teenager. It outlasted her school days. I got a cheap one from Ikea. It was very sturdy and excellent value. It was mounted on to a solid wall. DD was delighted with it and started assembling it as soon as we got home. DH finished it before bed.

From memory, it was folded flat against the wall very infrequently - but, the knowledge it could be folded flat was very important. The table had a sort of shelf return so that there was still space for some items on the table when folded flat, and we had an enormous shelf unit above so that there was plenty of "tidying up" places.

Daughter enjoyed folding away her study table (and homework) in the holidays and when she had friends over.

As a student I had a study bedroom with a length of kitchen worktop along one wall - I loved having a really big surface to work on and keep things handy and the depth was perfect. There was practically no-where to lounge though, except the bed. I never minded.

I guess it's a personal decision and I'd suggest asking your girls for their views.

Thanks very much bikergran and mygrannycanfly. I will look at the Ikea website. Also, the idea of a table with a shelf return so there is still some space on which to put items sounds great.

Bit late with this - but we have a wall mounted table in our utility. It's great.
It's really sturdy and extremely useful. Not sure where we got it, maybe Ikea
but it's relatively new and has been most useful.
