Kettles

I have a hob kettle for emergency use squaredog which I got when we lived in our previous house which had a gas hob. "Ahha" thought I, if we have a power cut I can still boil the kettle. It was possible to light the hob with matches if the power was off.

Well it was never needed - no power cuts to speak of and now I have an electric ceramic hob so it would be useless for cuts anyway.

I can't say I have used it much - it is certainly no quicker than my electric one and as for hotter - not sure how that would be possible if both came to boiling point. Did you use the same beaker/cup? My stoneware beakers definitely keep drinks far hotter than my china ones.

I always use a hob kettle and have done so for years. It is far more energy efficient if you have a gas hob. Using a hob kettle you use gas directly for heating it. If the gas is routed through a power station to make electricity it is being used at less than 60% efficiency.

I bought a second hand Alessi Whistling Bird kettle on ebay about 8 years ago and have used it ever since. The very broad base means it boils really quickly. My daughter's electric one seems to take ages by comparison.

I have one of those gadgets that just boils a measured amount of water into a cup,and I'm very happy with it. It suits me as I live alone.

I have been tempted to get one of those lona but don't they use more electricity keeping the water up to temperature? [Confused]

No Liz, they release the measured amount into a lower compartment and just heat that.
The rest of the water is still^up above^.

My kettle was areasonable price because it was second hand and the bird had lost a wing squaredog. I've picked one or two other bits of Alessi here and there but I was looking at the prices on ebay yesterday and was appalled! Way more than I've ever paid - where do people get the money?
