Little round burn marks on kitchen table

How can I get them off?

I grandsons thought it would be a nice change to have sparklers on a birthday cake instead of candles. I They thought it was great and it wasvery exciting pretty. Dd insisted on moving the cake into the kitchen before we lit them so as not to burn the carpet. In actuality the burn marks would have been much less conspicuous on the carpet. hmm

The cake icing had a light grey dusting of something on it afterwards too but a pasty brush got most of that off and you couldn't really taste it.

I think I might have to live with it.

Never mind. hmm

Is the table polished/waxed/varnished? If not how about lightly sanding the marks then rubbing a little polish (I used to use light tan shoe polish) to even up the colour?

It's varnished (shiny)

Charleygirl Mon 30-Sept-13 12:02:54

There is a method which I have forgotten. Why not try googling it?

j08 Mon 30-Sept-13 12:04:52

Ooh yes! Google! grin

I have found that all the good ideas, regarding mess or fire, take place in grandma's house and are not risked at home. French polisher ? and bill presented to GC for payment from pocket money.

No! I can't blame the grandsons! shock

jings the following happened to me, when I was a nanny/housekeeper [long ago!] The family were on holiday. I decided to put a thick blanket on their mahogany table and proceeded to iron the laundry [I wanted to watch a play on tele'] When I removed the blanket shock it had silvery marks that had been caused by the damp penetrating the surface of the table. I was terribly upset. Rang my father and, in floods of tears,
asked his advice. He mentioned something like 'Ringaway' so I bought several tubes of the stuff from the local ironmonger. I had to work a little of the "stuff" into the table OVER and OVER again with a soft cloth. My arms ached like crazy. Several attempts later, the marks lifted. The lady for whom I worked [and who owned the table] had a hairdressing business. A week or so after the family returned, to a spotless home, she came home one evening and casually mentioned that a client had reported that I had worked my fingers to the bone restoring the damaged table top. She hugged me and said...it's only a table...grin

The "client" was the owner of the hardware shop. hmm

I've used Ringaway to remove marks from polished furniture before. Do a little test patch first and and as Soop said do it gently, over and over again just a little bit at a time.

Burns might be harder though...they'll have made little holes. You can get those wax crayons for furniture, but they've never worked for me...

I think it's burnt into the actual wood too much for that. I think sanding will be involved. And something called "shellac" (?!) (google)

Will instruct DH. [smile

I have a feeling that when putting shellac on you would need to strip off the original finish (even if that was also shellac/french polish) or you would get a line where the old and new bits meet. Googling sounds a good idea. Know what you are dealing with before doing anything major.

Charleygirl Mon 30-Sept-13 13:05:52

I have googled it and there are various methods of removal, depending on the severity of the burn. Unfortunately only you can decide J08.

j08 Mon 30-Sept-13 13:11:14

Thanks for the help. Have googled and will show it all to DH. He can decide. smile

Sounds like a good plan, jings grin

Kitchen tables are, surely, meant to be battered and scarred.

Ours has all sorts of scratches etc on it, the worst being from when the last basset smelt a chocolate cake cooling on it and was not going to let a little thing like a kitchen table stand in her way! She was later found fat and asleep in the middle of the table. The surprising thing was there was no sign of the chocolate cake shock

Our table is battered because we've had a family around it! wine

Well yes. That's very true kittylester. And we did have fun with the cake! smile
