Why is it you can't seem to get a washing machine these days that does a 50° wash. What they used to call hand hot.

I did my washing at this temperature for years but now it either has to be 40° or 60°.

It's just not good enough. #world'sgonetopot

Over here washing machine heat temps are hot water -warm rinse, warm water -cool rinse or cold water- cold rinse. Washed clothes all my adult life...never knowing"exact" temp. I've made it alright so far! thlconfused

Oh! just once in a while such a thread gives us something silly to smile at. It's hardly been deadly serious. I for one am certainly no domestic goddess. I am a right untidy beggar!

Elegran Wed 16-Oct-13 21:25:48

I think we have had cutlery drawers mentioned before in a thread, so that would be repetition. Feel free to start one on how we all arrange the cutlery around the place setting, though. I don't think we've had that.

It would be a hard choice, Galen - maybe we should start one called "No socks please, we're Grannies"

I'm waiting for j08 to start one on teacosies/broom cupboards/cutlery drawers or some such similar controversial subject.

Galen, wink sunshine wine

Can we have a competition for the most boring topic?
Sorry! I know I'm grumpy!

Agus Wed 16-Oct-13 20:25:00

Oh come Aka. You know you are dying to join in. That subtle approach using the phrase 'wishy washy' and threads that are used to make tea towelswink

It is a clever design, anyway. Beats the old four-posts-with-little-metal-arms at each corner of the grass and the clothes prop holding up the crossed ropes in the middle. At least you can lower the top and put a plastic sock over it to keep the ropes clean. But we used to have a set of those with a second lot of little arms halfway down the posts, so you could hang another row of short things on another rope. Good for nappies.

In a different house with only a straight clothes line I used to hang a second row of nappies from the lower edges of the first row, pegged to alternate ones so as to keep them out straight (by that I mean that pegging one nappy directly to the one above would make it droop, pegging it to the ones either side of the one above it wouldn't)

Yes - on a windy day you can get socked! shock

(not a pun)

Mine has got a push through thing which you slot in after you have done the umbrella opening bit. And I think there is a way of doing it so that it stops the top bit turning. It is very old though.

Elegran Wed 16-Oct-13 19:11:49

There is a bit that you push up the "stem" (like the part of an umbrella that you push up to open it) and that has holes which engage with a button on the stem, keeping it open at various heights. I think it must all turn from the base, otherwise that button would keep the top from turning round the stem.

Elegran Wed 16-Oct-13 19:08:08

Mine seems to turn everywhere, particularly when I am standing close to it pegging things up.

j08 Wed 16-Oct-13 19:00:43

I think that's what it's for anyway.

j08 Wed 16-Oct-13 19:00:20

Don't they turn round from the top. Mine's got a shove through thing for when you don't want it to turn round.

Elegran Wed 16-Oct-13 18:46:30

gorki Does it have a kind of scabbard thing to bury in the ground and put it down into? It should be loose enough in that to turn round.

Nelliemoser Wed 16-Oct-13 17:47:20

DD is told she should wash her nurses uniform stuff at 60deg. I don't know if her machine has that, my old Zannussi has.

Gorki Wed 16-Oct-13 16:55:19

I envy you all. Mine doesn't go round at all even in the wind. Perhaps it's the way we've put it in the grass.confused

j08 Wed 16-Oct-13 16:36:44

Yes, I have a rotary clothes line. It rotates if the wind is strong enough. But it has been in position for fortyfive years now and it is slightly on the wonk, which doesn't help its turnability.

Elegran Wed 16-Oct-13 16:35:36

I wish you could stop it rotating while you are pegging things up. Mine spins so easily it swings round in the least breeze and clouts me on the head. It needs a braking system.

Oldgreymare Wed 16-Oct-13 16:23:04

Gorki.... wind!

positivepam Wed 16-Oct-13 16:22:57

Sorry jO8 my Zanussi does a 50 deg wash, gosh we must be bored! grin

Stansgran Wed 16-Oct-13 16:06:08

Even on something as unifying as the daily grind someone has to be grumpy.

Gorki Wed 16-Oct-13 16:05:57

j08 Well, if you can't beat them, join them so I shall add a question of my own.
Does anyone own a rotary clothes line that actually rotates and if so what is the secret?

merlotgran Wed 16-Oct-13 15:37:09

It's the weather. A reminder that winter is nigh. We're nesting....hmm
