Spring Cleaning

Is it only me that has the urge to purge at this time of year?
I've thoroughly cleaned the sitting room and rearranged the furniture, ditto the dining room and have also made a start on cleaning the kitchen cupboards. The house has been mopped from top to bottom and on Monday (we're out all day tomorrow) I shall attack the bathrooms. I'm pretty much always like this after Christmas, I can't seem to wait for Spring before getting stuck in to some serious cleaning.

Merlot that is a dreadful job. Really neck aching! DH did it just before Christmas with our valance as its a big window 108 inch rail. I am a short arse and reaching the pelmet is difficult. The damn hooks always seem to fall out onto the floor when I am trying to do it.

Iam I will try it again and report! I want to see what it does cleaning the bath.

I only took the decorations down today as I was poorly the last two days.
So it's a big clean up day today. I am definitely feeling better I can walk about the house today without feeling I need to sit down after a trip to the kitchen. My voice is rather croaky though.

Thanks Nellie. I fancy one because they're supposed to do everything, well almost. Clean cookers, showers, baths and even windows. Also, as I have dogs, I have the carpet cleaner always at the ready in case they manage to dash on to the carpet with muddy paws.

annodomini Mon 06-Jan-14 19:25:47

Take it easy, Nellie. I was thinking of a steam cleaner too. I don't have a very big house but think it would be cost effective if it does windows, floors and everything in the kitchen. What about carpets?

Iam64 Tue 07-Jan-14 08:42:31

Maybe we need a steam cleaner thread, given how curious three of us are about the potential benefits. I had a short period of sending for implements that were to change my life. One of them was a weed blitzed, didn't work properly, took ages to put together, hopeless waste of money and time. Then, I got a peculiar implement to hoe the flower beds with, it was supposed to reduce the pressure on my hands and wrists that go with using an ordinary hoe. Didn't. So - I have been reigning myself in from getting a magical steam cleaner, but I do fancy one!

iam There is one somewhere back. ?last Autumn. I can't sit here on GN all day. I have got to go off and find a good knitting project to keep me busy.

Nelliemoser Tue 07-Jan-14 08:53:32

Spring what? smile

Galen Tue 07-Jan-14 09:54:36

The only springs I have are the ones in my mattress.
Why do they need cleaning?
I've never cleaned them before!confused

whenim64 Tue 07-Jan-14 09:56:36

Slow down, peeps! It's still winter and my dust is clogging up the gaps in doors to keep the heat in. I'll be back in April if there's some sunshine grin

Soutra Tue 07-Jan-14 09:58:12

To return to the original question ... Yes it's you! I'm quite happy to wait for signs of spring then I'll think about it. In the meantime I have serious hibernating to do grin

annodomini Tue 07-Jan-14 10:18:11

Ditto, Soutra.

granjura Tue 07-Jan-14 11:36:41

Exactly Soutra- Spring cleaning is for ... Spring (and can wait... perhaps even for another Spring)- just like decorating. I hate to decorate when I can't have all the windows open to get rid of paint smells, etc.

petallus Tue 07-Jan-14 11:38:26

I've been doing a bit more cleaning.

I'm more into decluttering at the moment. Took some stuff down from the loft and took it to a charity shop.

The first one I tried said they weren't accepting anything because they had so much stuff at the moment, so I assume many others have been doing the same as me.

rosesarered Tue 07-Jan-14 11:45:50

Yes, I am doing the same; I think it's when the Christmas decs. come down isn't it?Gave all the lounge furniture a thorough polish yesterday, and will do the same today for furniture in the hall and the bedrooms [if I ever get off Gnet.]Looks good when it has that polish smell and glowing with not a speck of dust.shame that visitors never call when it looks so good, only on days when it needs doing, it's one of those laws I think.

glammanana Tue 07-Jan-14 12:33:40

A very kind person bought me two boxes of floral smelling lining paper for drawers and I have emptied all the drawers in my chest and relined them throwing all sorts of odd socks/bra's/knick's and what not out all the white furniture in the bedroom has been washed and polished I'm looking at the lounge and thinking maybe next week ? you don't want to do too much all in one go do you grin

Iam64 Tue 07-Jan-14 12:39:56

In certain frames of mind, clearing out and doing a spot of cleaning can be quite therapeutic. In other frames of mind, it's the last thing I want to do. My children in turn, all told me they knew something was up, if I started cleaning the windows. Since retirement, my relationship with domesticity has calmed down a bit. I do a bit most days, but other than the pre and post-decoration cleaning, only a bit!

Thistledoo Tue 07-Jan-14 19:16:44

Just revisiting this thread, to boast about my cleaning and decluttering efforts. Have made 3 trips to charity shop and two trips to the dump.
Once I started it just snowballed, I couldn't stop. Sitting down now catching up with Gransnet, but planning what I'm going to attack tomorrow. Its all been very cathartic and the cat has had a ball, jumping into draws, climbing up curtains and nearly getting put into the boot of the car for a trip to said charity shop.
OOps just realised that I have misspelt drawers. Although quite a few old pairs of draws were dumped during the process.

Iam64 Wed 08-Jan-14 09:23:20

Nothing like a tidy drawer is there Thistledoo…..
I had a similar clear out 3 years ago, and it went to my head, as I felt so free of clutter in so many ways. I suspect I took my new approach to extremes. Any item of clothing I hadn't worn over the summer, went to the charity shop when my winter clothes came down from the attic. Come the next summer, when it didn't rain every day, and the sun shone occasionally, I found I'd no summer clothes. They'd all gone to the charity shop after the year when it started to rain in April, and continued until September.

inishowen Wed 08-Jan-14 10:53:04

I tried it on New Years Day. When I knelt on the armchair to hoover behind it, I put my knee out. Then I wenched my arm somehow and can't use it at all now. Maybe I need a cleaner!

rosesarered Wed 08-Jan-14 12:14:32

There is a thread about ironing [under news-Kirstie Allsop] that got me thinking, is there a household chore that anyone actually likes? YES! for me anyway, I enjoy polishing. It's the only thing that I willingly do.So I must be like 'Her indoors' from Minder, there is an episode which made my DH laugh when Arthur and Terry are looking around a wealthy client's house and there is a grand piano, and Arthur says 'Cor! Her indoors would love that!' Terry says' Oh she plays does she?' and Arthur says'No, no, she just likes polishing things'.

margaretm74 Thu 09-Jan-14 20:09:55

No! It's all in my head but isn't getting translated into any meaningful activity.

margaretm74 Thu 09-Jan-14 20:12:56

have been knitting a Patons Rose Fairy Doll (lovely in the picture!) - got so fed up with stitching her up that I quite enjoyed the stabbing action with the needle when sewing on her head.

margaretm74 Thu 09-Jan-14 20:15:18

ps if this comment seems irrelevant to the discussion, it was in answer to nelliemoser who was looking for a knitting project

ninathenana Thu 09-Jan-14 22:29:45

Futher to my earlier post on this thread. I had a clear out of wardrobe and bedroom cupboard..............
