Do you check you supermarket receipt?

I would urge everyone to go through their food bill from the supermarket.

In Morrisons two weeks ago I was charged twice for an item. In Sainsburys today loose potatoes stated £1 per kg on the shelf. I queried the £1.50 per kg which came up on my receipt. The girl said she only had two prices to choose from and neither was £1 per kg. I went to customer services took the assistant to the shelf and got a refund.

These huge organisations are fleecing us by stealth. It is up to all of us personally to make sure we not being overcharged.

I check all of my supermarket receipts now overthehill. I was recently charged for 100 lemons at Asda (I had 1) and have spotted more mistakes on my Morrisons receipts than I care to remember. The staff in Asda were quite apologetic (apparently the cashier had pressed 2 noughts by mistake, fair enough) but the customer services in Morrisons are terrible. They actually look at you as if to say "do you actually want a refund then" ?

Always check if you've got any cash back on a debit card that you haven't asked for. There is something that has been going on for ages where a cashier will add cash back if you pay by card & normally the next person to be served will be a friend of theirs so they pass them your cash back

Yes, and I have found mistakes.

To help me check I always make sure if say it is two items bogoff or half price, I put them together on the belt so they go through together. This way they are highlighted on the bill as two items and easy to spot.

I wonder how many check the receipt and realise they have underpaid and go back to correct. Generally I must say I do not check- as I'm sure it evens out in the end. Life's too short.

I always check my receipts even if only for a small amount and have had numerous refunds after mistakes have been made,Asda seem to be the worst for me and even though I do go to customer services to sort it out why do I always feel as though I'm the guilty party after speaking to their "helpful" customer services people.

rosesarered seems to have got it worked out, Marelli! wink

Marelli Wed 28-May-14 19:39:39

The thing is, where do you stand in a busy shop to do all this checking of receipts? I sometimes feel quite flustered, trying to get my card/change back into my purse quickly enough before moving out of the way for the next customer confused.

Not by a supermarket, but by Virgin Media.

inishowen I did similar last week at Asda..saw on my receipt "niblets" I thought "I havnt bought any niblets"!! huh!! so went off to customer services to check it out....only to be told...it was the "Sweet corn" niblets sweet corn tut!!

I really embarrassed myself some years ago in the Co-op. I checked my receipt, and poultry was listed. Well I hadn't bought any chicken so I marched to customer services demanding why it was on my receipt. The manager looked over my receipt and asked mildly. "Have you got a cat?" "Yes" I replied. "The item in question is Whiskas cat food, poultry selection". I could have died with embarrassment!

I always check my receipt and can almost guarantee that I have been over charged at least once a month. I agree with others that M&S seem to be particularly bad about how they place their 'special offers' on their shelves. Asda used to give a £2 credit/refund if they had overcharged by even a penny but that seems to have gone by the wayside now.

All this reminds me of my granny. She'd go on the bus every week to the Co-op, come back on the bus and check her till receipt meticulously at the kitchen table.

If there was anything amiss, she'd put her hat back on and go back on the bus...etc. smile

Wouldn't dream of not checking. Find errors quite often so worth it.

GadaboutGran Tue 27-May-14 22:26:44

Saved myself £6.50 today at M&S by checking. An item not in the Dine in for £10 was on the shelf with similar items in the offer so I was charged full price for each of the 4 items. Try to remember to check now since we've found errors quite often.

Credit cards don't usually offer cashback, unlike debit cards, so using a credit card could avoid thieving such as mentioned by Lona.

I get really ratty about my local Tesco staff forgetting to add the "green clubcard points" for not taking bags. They ask us umpteen questions as we try to pack our shopping, so I've started asking them "Have you given me the points for re-using bags?"

grumppa Tue 27-May-14 20:30:26

Have any of you found mistakes in your favour? Have you drawn them to the shop's attention?

rosesarered Tue 27-May-14 20:21:38

That's true Ana , so I usually find a seat, put my specs on and go through the entire bill. About 1 in 5 times I find something wrong and go to the customer service desk.As I am retired now, I have the time for that, but so many others do not.

Ana Tue 27-May-14 20:16:00

sunseeker and Lona, you must be very popular with the rest of the queue! grin

Even if a mistake has been made, in my Asda or Tesco you're just referred to the customer service counter because the checkout person can't sort it out once the till's been closed after the transaction.

kittylester Tue 27-May-14 19:51:44

I always check that the offers are done correctly, usually in the car, and go back if they aren't.

I rarely check the whole blinking thing blush but I do look at any big amounts or when there a few of the same items.

Lona Tue 27-May-14 18:51:41

On Facebook today someone has posted about supermarket checkout staff putting a 'cashback' on their bill.
It happened more than once, and could add up to a lot of stolen money by the end of the day, if the customers didn't notice.

Always check your bill, before leaving the till, as it could be very difficult to prove that you hadn't had the cash!

sunseeker Tue 27-May-14 17:25:47

I always check my receipts, usually while still standing at the end of the checkout! I have been asked numerous times if everything is alright and I just say I am checking. When going through the self checkouts I check each item as it is scanned, never had a problem so far!

Riverwalk Tue 27-May-14 16:38:32

On three separate occasions I told the staff at the local Co-op that a particular wine was 4.99 on the shelf but was being charged at 5.99. I threatened to inform Trading Standards and it was eventually changed.

Goodness knows how much money we are being fleeced for!

Stansgran Tue 27-May-14 16:17:05

M&S have a ploy at the moment. A voucher for 25 % off breaded fish and a shelf offer of two lots of fish for £5 . The offer fish and the non offer are all on the same shelf. I wasn't the only one who got caught and DH made a great to do.£3+ refund but what a time consuming faff.

Grandmanorm Mon 26-May-14 20:25:02

I always check mine and have no problem telling the supermarket if it is wrong. Like Soutra I also check the offers to make sure they have been applied.
