Maybe wash at 60 and use a good bio liquid like Persil small and mighty which has a very (nice) strong smell, add fabric conditioner with a scent as well. Dry outside and tumble dry to finish. I have found that deals with smelly stuff reasonably well.

I would have thought that noraml washing, as you are doing, would remove any smells. Are you hanging them outside afterwards?

I use 48 hour deodorants but daily, after my shower!

Vinegar in the final rinse is one, or a paste of bicarbonate of soda spread on the armpits before washing, or pr-treatment with a shampoo for oily hair, or even dissolving soluble aspirins in water and applying that.

Also allowing the antiperspirant to dry completely before dressing.

And, not using an antiperspirant that says it lasts 48 hours.

This may sound obvious squaredog but does he have a clean shirt every day? and shower every day?
It sounds as though he may have a problem of excessive sweating and I would feel more sympathetic than annoyed. He may be worrying about it himself.

Squeeze some Fairy liquid (washing-up variety) onto the stinky bits. Scrub well in with a nail brush. Wash shirts in a hot wash (90° if poss). Works a treat on T-shirts.

If it is not cured by daily showers and deodorant (and possibly replacing the affected shirts if they are beyond redemption) his GP can prescribe something that helps.

The reason it works is that the washing-up detergent and the hot water both dissolve the natural oils that sweat contains and so remove the 'sediments' in the fabric that are causing the smell. Cooler water and less stringent detergent aren't strong enough to really remove the grease.

He may be perfectly clean and unsmelly but a build up of old sweat will still cause a stink.

Well, yes he showers every day with a clean shirt, but he has mentioned this to me in the past.........

I wash cotton shirts at 60 and dry them outside. Don't use biological detergent as DH reacts badly (eczema). Is he aware of excessive sweating?

I use this www.dettol.co.uk/antibacterial-laundry-cleanser for my sweaty exercise gear, as I do worry about being smelly once the fabric heats up when I wear it. I don't really know if it would work in your case, but may be worth a try.

I also found targeting the under arms of my son's work shirts with washing up liquid rubbed in with a brush worked well.

I've returned shirts to a 60* wash and that's helped.........Obviously I don't know how long they've been that bad.

GP might be an answer.......

Sorry cant help but just have to boast about this as its so peculiar. DH does not sweat!!! I have never in 36 years of marriage had a sweaty garment form him. When we come of the golf course my socks and shirt re wringing his are bone dry - he's in league with the devil. It is a bit strange though.

Is your son wearing his shirts too tight- some deodorants also make things worse. My sister has this trouble with her husband but he is overweight and the problem is getting worse the more weight he puts on. Also for some people if they eat lots of curries, garlic an highly spiced food it makes their sweating worse.

I have recently got Mr P using a spray antiperspirant rather then a roll on, as although his shirts weren't smelly, they were getting quite stained in the armpit region, mainly because he never used to let it dry before dressing. personally I use a Mitchum roll on everyday after showering, but I do make sure it's dry before putting clothes on.

Reminds me of that old joke, a chap goes into a chemist and says "I want to but a deodorant" The chemist says "Certainly Sir, ball type or aerosol?"

The man replies "Neither, it's for under me arms!"

sue I don't sweat either. When I used to regularly, (several times a week) jog 10 km in the tropical heat of the city where I lived, everyone else who ran with me would be crimson in the face and dripping with perspiration, and I'd look the same as when we started.
