So what's in YOUR fridge?

I have just defrosted the fridge, thrown away a load of rubbish and restocked it.
What is left? Milk and orange juice in the door, assorted jams and chutneys, soft spread, hard marge for baking, a jar of goose fat and at the bottom in the "salad" drawer, too many potatoes, some carrots and the inevitable onions. If I had a mouseproof cool larder I would scarcely need a fridge. I don't keep eggs, tomatoes or fruit in the fridge so why do I have a huge one?Or are the empty shelves telling me to hie me to the shops?

I think this sound fairly common. I still keep my eggs in the fridge but get them out in good time if making a cake. I usually have lots of sald and veg, soft fruit like mangos and melons, yogurts, cheese (in a special cheese thingy from Lakeland ) on the bottom shelf, left overs like some rice pudding and cold pork from yesterday. I seem to need a huge fridge even though there is only two of us as I rarely use a tin except baked beans about once a fortnight (jacket pot and beans for my dinner if DH is out at Bowls). Oh yes and wine and chocolate!!

Stop showing off grin

Like you Soutra, I have jams, pickles, chutneys, brown and tomato sauces. Goose fat, butter (salted and unsalted), soft marge, ham, cheese, fruit, tomatoes and not much else in the salad drawers. I do have a cold cupboard but it's in the utility room so I only really use it for tins etc. I do keep eggs in the fridge. I used up all the veg yesterday so need to go shopping today!

There is also a tub of DD's salted caramel sauce and I think it is shouting for me to liberate it!!

Free the East Midlands salted caramel sauce wink

Lots of stewed apple which I made yesterday from the many apples on the ground rather than on the tree. Shall freeze some today.

Pittcity Mon 06-Oct-14 10:33:59

I've got ice cream to go with that grin

henetha Mon 06-Oct-14 10:43:00

Wish I could send you some! Ice cream with stewed apples is lovely.

annodomini Mon 06-Oct-14 10:44:17

Not a great deal in mine at the moment. Pesto, mayonnaise, butter and low fat spread, ditto soft cheese. Aubergine, tomatoes and mushrooms waiting to be made into a dish (with various other veg which are lurking in the freezer) which I will divide into four and freeze three.

Beer and Wine mainly

We have a smaller fridge now that it's just the two of us. Some days it's half empty, some days there is not enough room. Can't win!

We also have a cold 'cupboard' which doubles as a garage!grin. Works very well if things are tightly sealed.

Stuff left over from Saturday's party. I can't in all conscience throw it away yet. I'll just wait until it starts to move grow green whiskers look sad, then I can chuck it out with a clear conscience.

I tidied up the M & S Salted Caramel Sauce in my fridge, spoonful by delicious spoonful. My fridge has milk, orange juice, cheese, yoghurts and a few things in tupperware pots waiting to be thrown out.

sherish Mon 06-Oct-14 11:58:13

In my fridge is milk, yogurts, cheese slices, laughing cow cheese spread, half a cooked chicken, leftover stuffing and veg from yesterday, salad stuff, three carrots, jar apple sauce, jar tartar sauce, tomato ketchup.

ninathenana Mon 06-Oct-14 12:11:36

It's looking rather bare at the moment.
Milk OJ, lager, jam, mayo, cold meat for sarnies, leftover roast pork from yesterday, eggs, butter, cheese, strawberry mouse, black pudding, kitkats.

Oh and something only the select few will have, insulin grin

harrigran Mon 06-Oct-14 13:24:00

In the door I have marmalade, salad cream, French dressing, ketchup, chutney, mint sauce, capers, German mustard, Caesar salad dressing, sachets of stewed apple and milk.
Top shelf has white and rose wine and champagne and fresh orange juice.
Then comes yogurts, cheese spread, butter, margarine and other cheeses. Ham and other cooked meats and pates. Pre-prepared vegetables and some leftover salad from yesterday.
Bottom of fridge has sausages and schnitzels and some cooked potato left from yesterday. Salad drawer has peppers, tomatoes and cucumber.
I am just waiting for the rain to stop and then I will go shopping to get fresh meat and vegetables.
We have a floor to ceiling larder fridge for just two of us and it never seems quite big enough, I wonder if a good tidy would create more space.

janerowena Mon 06-Oct-14 13:25:34

Too much to mention.

And which fridge? grin

kittylester Mon 06-Oct-14 13:44:08

How many do you have janer? We have three but I didn't count the one in the utility room which houses wine, beer, champagne, tonics and soft drinks or the one in the garage which has any overflow at busy times! The one in the kitchen is an 'American' one and, like *harrigran's', never seems quite big enough! confused

glammanana Mon 06-Oct-14 13:45:18

Not too much at the moment waiting for fresh salad deliveries into market shop as I never buy fresh goods on a Monday (a left over from my mums days)
There is butter sandwich filler eggs bacon and some new potatoes OJ and milk fridge tub of beans and some lidl potato au-gratin for to-morrows tea.So pretty low on stock at the present.

Marmight Mon 06-Oct-14 14:01:44

Don't ask - blush

janerowena Mon 06-Oct-14 14:07:16

Yes, three. Only one in the house, but when you grow a lot of your own fruit and veg, vermin-proof cool storage becomes important. It's also nice to have somewhere to hide surprise cakes and things. So as it was my birthday on Saturday, DBH managed to keep the cake he made over three evenings last week, while I was out, a complete surprise!

hildajenniJ Mon 06-Oct-14 14:10:13

I have assorted jams and marmalade, sticky pickle, mango chutney, marrow pickle (homemade) tomato ketchup, mayonaisse, salad cream, pickled beetroot and gherkins.
Double Gloucester cheese, processed cheese squares (for cheeseburgers). Pack of cooked ham slices. Eggs baking marg. clover spread. Caramel sauce.
In the salad drawers there are swede, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, cucumber and celery. Oh, nearly forgot the milk.
Not to forget half a can of dog food.

My fridge needs a clean out! I do one on Tuesdays when it is bin day. So, anyway, here goes:

Bottle of white wine (like it chilled but it will be there for weeks and weeks before it is drunk).
Slab of chocolate (husband likes it rock hard hence kept in the fridge door; I don't which suits me so I don't eat it).
The usual milk, butter, cheese etc.
Fresh pasta blush ready for the spag bol later this week.
Packet of salad leaves (past its date but with a piece of kitchen towel slipped in on either side of the leaves - which according to Rachel Johnson no less - keeps them fresher longer).
Salad dressing, piccalilli
Cold meat platter thingy from Lidl - unopened.
Shredded brussel sprouts with lemon and thyme butter - weak moment in Tesco, will eat it tonight with...
Two bumper size fresh fish cakes from the local Farmer's Market.

That's it!
I don't keep eggs in the fridge.

feetlebaum Mon 06-Oct-14 16:59:41

Blimey - you clean out your fridge every week?

By the time I throw something out I'll have been meaning to throw it for few days - like the bowl of left-over dhal that I made a week ago... that went out yesterday.

It's amazing what can be found at the back, nestling behind other things though, isn't it?

Galen Mon 06-Oct-14 17:04:41

My fridge gets cleaned out whenever darling daughter is coming. She goes ape if anything is 5mins past its best before date
