Bottom shelf of the fridge

This may be a silly question or it may not be.

I know to put raw meat on the bottom shelf.
But is it ok to put something else there as well, that is cooked, so long as the two items do not touch?

The fridge gets crowded at christmas, so I am juggling space in it.

Do bacteria sort of run around? blush

If you want to contribute that is fine. Not sure what else to say to make it better.

Ana Thu 11-Dec-14 18:05:31

I only leave them half an inch or so, kitty, just to keep them docile...tchwink

soon, I think soutra's point is that most of us knew most of this anyway so don't really need to change what we do. Unless your family come down with stomach bugs on an alarmingly regular basis you are probably getting it right already as well. smile

Anyway, please can we stop talking about fridges and bacteria, mine needs and good clean and it won't be getting one until at least January. blush

Ana, if I may say so, that's a flipping gecko waste of good wine! Feeding it to bacteria indeed. grin

oh good!

Ana Thu 11-Dec-14 17:42:24

The bacteria in my fridge are all legless. I keep opened bottles of wine in there too...tchgrin

In short, ignore me Soutra smile

I had a problem. I asked for advice. I got it. I will change. Up to others if they do.
And I dont want anyone to contribute to any thread I write or post, if they dont want to. Or indeed read it.
No one is obliged to read anything I write.

Please soontobe don't include me in your comment "we have assumed something when we haven't actually been advised to do so"!
I think simple common sense, a basic knowledge of food hygiene and how bacteria spread allied with a lifetime of preparing and cooking food make this a non- issue. I don't need some civil servant to state the bl***ing obvious and I ain't poisoned anybody yet.
What is the problem?confused

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 17:22:46

Well now you can change if you want to. smile

Ariadne Thu 11-Dec-14 17:15:19

How on earth have we managed, given our (admittedly varied) advanced ages, the families we have successfully reared, the cooking and storing we have done, to do without all this...anthropomorphic bacteria too!

Grannyknot Thu 11-Dec-14 17:07:16

This is what Bill Bryson says about bacteria in his book "A Short History of Nearly Everything":

"... it is easy to convince ourselves that we have banished bacteria to the fringes of existence. Don't you believe it. Bacteria may not build cities or have interesting social lives, but they will be here when the Sun explodes. This is their planet, and we are on it only because they allow us to be.”

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 16:24:49

smile

I must admit, until I looked into this, I did think that some breeds of bacteria did have legs!

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 16:23:33

Or else assumed something, when we havent be advised to actually do so.

crun Thu 11-Dec-14 16:22:56

If bacteria had legs they might run all the way from your bum to your mouth.....
smile

I think that we have been conditioned to be over cautious on this issue.

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 16:16:52

Googling, all I can find is that there is a problem if the items touch each other.

No touching, no problem.

soontobe Thu 11-Dec-14 16:12:28

But they dont do they. They dont move across a fridge shelf. Or up the door. Or onto other shelves. They just multiply on the actual piece of meat.

Soutra Thu 11-Dec-14 16:09:12

Bacteria multiply soontobe that's what we mean by spreading and, unchecked, yes everywhere.

Grannyknot Thu 11-Dec-14 16:01:52

soon everywhere tchgrin !

Ana Thu 11-Dec-14 15:56:22
