Washing the rug in the bath was suggested. I haven't got a bath, so I took my sheepskin rug into the shower with me, wet it thoroughly and applied a zig-zag of shampoo. Then I stamped around on it and worked the lather in with my feet. Rinsed it and hung it to drip for 24 hours. I squeezed water out of the ends now and then. This morning I put it in the washing-machine for a drain and medium spin. It's now spread out on an old towel. I've combed it with my fingers, and I think it's going to look really good.
This worked for me. Quite labour-intensive certainly.
