We are downsizing and moving to north of Lisbon to a small house with more land. I dont think I will miss much but what would you miss about the UK apart from family. The only sad thing is leaving the cats behind as I would worry about the stray cats and hunting dogs that leave there.

I truly admire those who up sticks and move confidently to another country. I reckon that because they EXPECT to have a great time, they DO have a great time. I lived in the Channel Islands (not even really 'abroad'!) for 9 years and missed England every day. I tried hard to settle down and become a Channel Islander but I didn't succeed very well and was glad to return to Blighty. Apart from family and friends, I missed the good shops (internet is not the same), the good customer service (not prevalent in the CIs), trains, my job, English villages, London.....oh, well, I could go on but it's boring.

I reckon the original poster is one of those who has done the research and is confident of settling well in her new country, which I am sure she will do, so the very best of luck to her - hope you have a great time.

I have never been to Portugal but have been to Spain many times as we owned a villa there. I never ever wanted to sell our house in the Uk and am so glad that we didn't. The grass is greener in UK not Spain. I love the 4 seasons and the summers in Spain get far to hot. Many expats that we came to know in Spain wished they could return to Uk but unable to get back on the property ladder as it wasn't quiet what they expected. Most of the time they were propping up the bar as though in holiday mode all the time which after a period of time is not that healthy.
If you go to Lisbon, keep your property here in the Uk and rent it out. We have since sold our villa.
