My husband and I have bought a lovely semi ex council house and have put a lot of work into it sprucing it up. Just had new windows and doors fitted and now thinking about naming it. We have moved around quite a lot as we are ex forces and finally feel settled. Not sure what name to choose . With it being ex council it feels like choosing a name is a bit fur coat and no knickers. It's a very quiet road in a Yorkshire village about a mile from the sea. Any ideas anybody? I'm new to this by the way, looking forward to some suggestions.??

Vera Duckworth in Coronation St called her two up, two down terraced house The Old Rectory which I thought was hilarous. The kind of thing Hyacinth Bouquet might do.
Not suggesting you do the same though.......

Chez Nous?

Welcome, Antjexix
A few years ago, my family had the same dilemma.
At the time, my son had a paper round in the village where we lived, so that helped to rule out quite a few of our options.
Rose Cottage was one, but there were two already.
Rivendell was another (We were all into the Lord of the Rings!), but my daughter ruled that out.
Mowdiewarts was my favourite (Mole hills in Scots, as we had a plague of them!), but my son ruled that out (said it sounded too 'warty'!!). Eventually, we settled on Juniper Cottage...and planted a few juniper bushes in the front garden for authenticity.
Looking forward to hearing what you finally decide.
And all the best for a more settled life in your new home.

Not Rose Cottage- when I was a student nurse this was the name for the mortuary! It did have roses growing outside.

We lived by the sea in Devon. Just before we moved there we had a holiday visiting some of the more remote Scottish Islands. Several times I saw a house named "Tigh-Na-Mara", and asked what it meant. "House by the sea" was the answer, so we called our new home that. I liked it much better than "Seascape" which was it's original name.

When house hunting we looked at a house which had a family with several children and chaotic rooms. Only when we left did I notice the name"Beddleham Manor" say it quickly.

Anything to do with nature would suit me. I had a friend whose husband was 6ft 2inches and his brothers were taller. Their name was Meadows, hence Long Meadows like Monte's.
Incidentally, I thought the late Duchess of Devonshire was a Mitford, the youngest in fact. I think her name was Barbara. She was an avid Presley fan.She was nothing like the others. I can't remember which one was besotted by Hitler.

The Mitford girls were a colourful lot.

Deborah Mitford was Duchess of Devonshire, she died last year. She wrote a dozen books.

Unity was besotted with Hitler, and went to live in Germany, where she shot herself in the head when Britain and Germany were at war. She was brought back to Britain and recovered but had brain damage.

Diana was also impressed by Hitler, and married Oswald Mosely, leader of the British Union of Fascists. She was imprisoned in London for three years under Defence Regulation 18B.

Jessica was a communist supporter, eloped with Esmond Romilly to the Spanish Civil War, went to the US RCAF and died. He later volunteered for the RCAF and died over the North Sea in WW2.

Nancy wrote "U and non-U", "The Pursuit of Love" and "Love in a Cold Climate" plus other books. she had a longstanding relationship with French politician and statesman Gaston Palewski.

Pamela married and divorced a millionaire physicist. John Betjeman, was in love with her for a time.

He died, not her.

Did you happen on it by chance? Then Serendipity might suit

Elrel Thu 01-Oct-15 18:46:33

Mrsmop - a friend married a Vietnamese bride named Nu, he named their home Chez Nu, of course.
Rosemary married Mr White and they lived happily in White Rose Cottage and, of course, planted white roses!

Chez when ?

mrsmopp Thu 01-Oct-15 22:27:40

Chez nous means our house, or our place. (French)
Nuestra Casa (Spanish.)
I quite like Chez Nous

I saw the end house of a row in Lancashire called Thendun - 'the end one' for those from elsewhere.

When we bought this house I wanted to call it Banks Own, it`s on a riverbank, and the mortgage was from the bank, but hubby didn`t agree with me, in the end we just stuck to the number.

sherish Fri 02-Oct-15 07:57:15

Mi casa - means my house but I don't know the word for our.

Grannyknot Fri 02-Oct-15 08:22:06

sherish in films about the Mafia (or somewhere) I've heard "Mi casa, su casa" - my home is your home. So I always say that when my children want to borrow something or they ask permission to do something at ours. They then roll their eyes at me grin

Elegran Fri 02-Oct-15 09:24:28

There is a song "Mi casa, su casa" Perry Como sang it www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsy2TsQ9vns

Our house would be casa nostra.

I think the mafia called themselves "cosa nostra" - our thing.

Hi ant, why not pick the name of the place you both loved, e.g. your place of choice for your honeymoon or another holiday destination?

Do you have a flowering plant/shrub/tree you both like? We bought this house named after a variety of shrub, of which t here were plenty.

Choose a place you both like/love, research it, in order to find its ancient name. Does that appeal?

I've seen houses and bungalows with Aussie town names. I've yet to see one called Uluru grin

Good luck.

Antjexix Tue 27-Oct-15 13:28:08

Thank you LuckyDucky

Not decided yet?

Katek Tue 27-Oct-15 17:14:08

House at end of our street was called Dunfermin - done farming in local dialect.

Daisyanswerdo Tue 27-Oct-15 17:53:11

Clever, Eleanorre!

We bought a house that had the number 13. I suggested calling it 'Firdene'.
