My husband and I have bought a lovely semi ex council house and have put a lot of work into it sprucing it up. Just had new windows and doors fitted and now thinking about naming it. We have moved around quite a lot as we are ex forces and finally feel settled. Not sure what name to choose . With it being ex council it feels like choosing a name is a bit fur coat and no knickers. It's a very quiet road in a Yorkshire village about a mile from the sea. Any ideas anybody? I'm new to this by the way, looking forward to some suggestions.??

'Dunroamin'? Sorry, couldn't resist - I'm sure you'll have some more sensible suggestions soon...wink

Antjexix Wed 30-Sept-15 17:12:11

I've seen that name online and quite liked it,husband wasn't convinced though(smile)

Another common one is 'LLamedos' (read it backwards)
Is there anything which would suit the road name, or perhaps something in Yorkshire dialect like Eehbygum? I have seen 'Panyan' on Picklers Hill for example. I think it needs to be a talking point rather than a boring name.
Do let us know your choice. Enjoy the fruits of your labour, you must be proud of yourselves.

My friend's husband was an avid self builder. I think he built every house they lived in.
They were always given a name which was a play on her name. Lindisfarne and Lindishaven are two I remember. Personally I think Dunroamin is awful grin
Tying it into the name of the street/road is a good idea. Could you tell us just that line of the address ?

Street name is Mitford Road,we have roses in the front garden...maybe something to do with them...

kittylester Wed 30-Sept-15 18:32:31

Unity then for the Mitford and for you two!

Is there anything special you can see from the house perhaps? Or any beautiful flowers in the garden? Or something based on your favourite location when in the forces?

Our old house was called 'Threeways' - our friends used to laugh and say we were not very imaginative - lol ;)

One thing I truly hate, not for individual houses, but estates, new developments- is the awful idea of naming it or the street after what was totally destroyed to build it 'The orchards' (gone!) 'Badgers' Hill' (gone!), 'Foxholes' (gone!)...etc! In very poor taste ihmo.

Near the sea and roses? Hmmn, name it after me?grin
Was your DH a Marine? you could call it Mariners (have seen this house name in Devon.) Rosemarine? That's sea and roses in one fell swoop.
Seashells, Shorelea. Is the house a colour, white? Whitewalls etc.

A house near me is called "Orl Wors". (All ours) the owners are Geordies! Our old house was called West House, not very original, but it was at the west end of the village.

By the way, welcome Antjexix. I hope you enjoy Gnet as much as me.

I like 'Mariners' roses

Coolgran65 Wed 30-Sept-15 22:30:24

What about the location on the street/road. Could it fall into the category of a cottage.

e.g. The Corner Cottage The End Cottage. Our Cottage.

I would love the option of a Rose Cottage

I hate Dunroamin....

Elrel Wed 30-Sept-15 23:41:11

kittylester - I like 'Unity'!

Cherrytree59 Thu 01-Oct-15 00:13:36

Costaplenty??hmm

kittylester Thu 01-Oct-15 06:44:33

Elrel, I suppose it could be Debbo or Diana or whatever the other one was called!

kittylester Thu 01-Oct-15 06:51:03

Ooopps! There were three more Mitford sisters - Jessica, Pamela and Nancy - none of them good as a house name though! grin

ninathenana Thu 01-Oct-15 08:41:19

Seaford
Proximity to the sea mixed with Mitford

rubysong Thu 01-Oct-15 08:46:55

How about Newton (from Newton Park, where the Mitford's were brought up) or Redesdale (their father was Baron Redesdale).

rosesarered Thu 01-Oct-15 09:24:57

The Mitfords were an unpleasant lot, wouldn't name my house after any of them. One of the sisters was also a friend of Hitler.

rosesarered Thu 01-Oct-15 09:32:56

Antjex, plant the things you like in the front garden and use one of those names, Myrtles, The Conifers, Rowans, or do you have a view? what about the ever popular Fairview, Meadow View, etc. Rose Dene.
Not keen on funny names I must admit, but have seen Costapacket,KindaKool,Dunroaming and so on.
then there are places that you like.....Windemere, Ambleside and so on.
Let us know what you eventually choose?smile

Antjexix Thu 01-Oct-15 09:43:37

Thank you everyone smile

vampirequeen Thu 01-Oct-15 09:47:00

Rose D'Or

Or a play on the house number e.g. Forteetoo

Antjexix Thu 01-Oct-15 09:55:01

Thank you. You have all given me something to think about, will keep you updated smile

Minder Thu 01-Oct-15 11:15:36

Not really a suggestion but I'm from Yorkshire too and I moved to Hertfordshire and the name of the house we bought was The Langdales. I was really pleased with me coming from Yorkshire and being a fair way from home.
