Green conservatory roof!

A broom may scratch the glass. We found a long-handled squeegee mop-like contraption which has a jointed handle - it just reaches if we stand on a small stepladder. Then we hose off the soapy water. However, it was one of those one-off offers from Lidl.

I am sure there will be something similar in a hardware shop or on Amazon/ebay etc.

It is one of those once-every-so-often jobs which are difficult but worth it.
The window cleaner will do the windows but not the roof.

I suppose it depends what it is made of, whether it can take a bit of bleach.

We don't get mould on ours ( made of glass ) but still get bits of all sorts, bird poo, leaves etc so bought a long handled flat mop type thing from Lakeland.Washed off with the garden hose.

We don't seem to get mould either, but it does get dirty and attracts bird poo and leaves.

We must have another go at it soon.

Well, mine is polycarbonate or plastic! I've got a soft, expanding broom thing I can use. e exhausting, though! I hate the thought of using hoses though because I hate dirty Windows. Having said that, I have got a Karcher window cleaner but my energy is reduced these days!

You'd have to climb up on the roof to do it with a Karcher

I just want to reach out of my Windows and scrub the conservatory roof clean with my soft broom but need to know what detergent to use. "A woman,s work is never done" as my mum used to say! She was right!

DH does ours with soapy water with bleach in it, and an extending soft brush I bought him at the Harrogate Flower show. You can attach a hose to the end of it to rinse it off after it's had a good scrub. The only part that gets green mould is one side of the ridge where it doesn't seem to get any sun, but bleach solution usually gets rid of it. It is a pain though.

I did think of doing it through the bedroom window but haven't tried that method yet.
I would try hot water with good squirt of washing up liquid or Flash or similar and some, but not too much, bleach. (are there plants around nearby?)

Probably i won't do it through the bedroom window as, knowing me, I will step off the stool, knock the bucket of water all over the bedroom carpet

I had been thinking of Jeyes fluid, that I would be happy to use in a greenhouse. It's supposed to be fine on plastic garden furniture.

I'd be careful using Jeyes Fluid on white upvc unless it is very dilute - it can stain.

This is a problem the sellers of conservatories don't seem to want to think about. If the conservatory roof is high enough to walk under it is bound to present a problem to clean. Particularly if you no longer feel safe climbing on ladders to try.
Leaning out of bedroom windows does not sound a very good idea .

I used to clean mine with a pressure washer and it removed the algae well. You may find a few leaks that way though!

When my sister in law and her DH, both in their late seventies - visited us recently I was horrified to hear that he cleans their conservatory by hanging out of the window of their bedroom, with s-i-l hanging onto his legs!

I am going to ignore ours for the time being. I did wonder whether to wait for a day when the rain is lashing down and just squirt some cleaning fluid from the bedroom window on to it.

. I reckon after 50 odd years there can't be too much she doesn't know about him. If she finds herself one day just holding onto his trousers instead of his legs, I suppose we'll find out!

I have noticed that since my window cleaner uses pure water my conservatory roof has not gone green. The water from the window above drips on it. When he comes, if there is any moss or bird mess on it I ask him to wipe it off. I also believe something called Wet and Forget keeps it clean. You could pour that out of upper window with a small watering can, it has to be diluted.

The window cleaner has high reach equipment.

Thanks for that Marieeliz, I didn't ask the window cleaner to do the conservatory roof because I didn't think the pure water would get rid of any green or birdie droppings.

Perhaps I'll ask him to do it next time rather than struggle ourselves.
