To clean a lavatory? Pour in a can of coke cola around. Leave it for a few minutes. Result Sparkly clean grin

Precoat stove tops by using car wax. It's great to see a shine.

Oil spatters? 2 drops of mineral oil on kitchen tissue, wipe and yucky,
gloop comes right off grin

Anyone have a messy cleaning job and use a product not associated with cleaning?

italiangirl I also use a sponge on a stick- it is supposedly for cleaning one's back or feet but is ideal for the hard to reach places in a shower. When replacing the sponge I secure it using an elastic band- it does not matter if it disintegrates frequently as they are so easily replaceable.

We have the blind cleaning"thingy" but as there are base units in front of the window I can't reach to use it. Hence we find taking it down easier.

're reaching Venetian blinds I'm having difficulty cleaning recesses,in showers so I saw,a sponge on a long stick seemed to do the, trick .I'm definitely going to try the coke and vinegar ideas, any ideas for easy clean wood laminate flooring and a rug so it's 9 month old GS safe.

Lakeland sell a clever cleaning device for cleaning blinds. It has parallel arms that clean several layers at the same time and the cover comes off the device to wash. It's hard to describe but works a great!

Yes, I've got some out of date coke that's going down the pan now too, Marmight. I buy it for visitors and none of them seem to care for it either.

Marmight Thu 05-Nov-15 07:39:00

Clean glass vases/ decanters with a slosh of vinegar and a few grains of rice. Quick swirl and job done.
Baby wipes remove stains on carpets, soft furnishings and clothes
Going to try the cola treatment on the loos. DD's have bequeathed me a pack of the stuff and I hate it. Was going to chuck it down the drain - maybe it will clean that too?!

Alea Thu 05-Nov-15 06:26:26

I'm with you on that Ana !!

LuckyDucky Thu 05-Nov-15 06:05:15

You reminded me kateyk
toothpaste works well on chrome. smile

Ana Wed 04-Nov-15 23:10:45

Crikey fluttERBY, wouldn't it have been cheaper to just ditch the saucepan? grin A bucketful of Domestic seems rather OTT...

Lynker Wed 04-Nov-15 23:07:31

White wine vinegar and washing up liquid in warm water gets red wine out of carpets.... absolutely amazing!

fluttERBY123 Wed 04-Nov-15 22:54:13

For a badly burnt saucepan eg you forgot about the fruit stewing there - submerge in a bucket of neat Domestos for a week - comes up good as new.

Ana Wed 04-Nov-15 22:41:52

DD had those fitted to both her living room windows and says it was a really good decision - you can slant them to stop the sun's glare (or anyone outside's vision!) and they're so much easier to clean than venetian blinds.

rosequartz Wed 04-Nov-15 22:31:51

Roller blinds are either up or down, though !
(sounds like the Grand Old Duke of York grin)
- or neither up nor down!
If privacy is a problem you don't necessarily want the blind right down all the time.
We have the vertical slat blinds which don't seem to get so messy and you can take individual ones down and wash them if some get more dirty than others. You can even replace individual slats.

aggie Wed 04-Nov-15 21:46:13

grrrr .... when we ,, not new ....

aggie Wed 04-Nov-15 21:45:26

I used that film when new turned part of the kitchen into a shower room , worked well still bright but private , even with the light on , got it in B+Q

Charleygirl Wed 04-Nov-15 21:23:17

Thanks loopylou where could I buy it?

loopylou Wed 04-Nov-15 18:36:39

How about opaque sticky film Charleygirl? You'd still get the light but no one could see in. Easy to clean too.

Bellanonna Wed 04-Nov-15 17:22:19

I think your advice on pouring cola down the pan is a very good one, LuckyDucky. I can't imagine a better use for it. By the way, if you are not afk, or when you come back, I was wondering whether you were Canadian. Just a thought.

Anne58 Wed 04-Nov-15 17:20:48

Maggiemaybe YUK!

I suppose if you bought cheap own brand cola in 2 litre bottles it wouldn't cost too much!

Maggiemaybe Wed 04-Nov-15 16:59:11

The coke/loo advice would have come in handy when my student DS and 7 housemates, years ago, were worrying about getting their bond back from their landlord. He rang me to ask what they should use to clean the toilet. They hadn't done it once in 12 months. grin

LuckyDucky Wed 04-Nov-15 16:41:20

Good one Alea grin

KatyK Wed 04-Nov-15 16:27:42

Well, it's not a messy job but as I have put on another thread we had a while ago about household tips, toothpaste will bring chrome taps and anything chrome really up very shiny. Just plaster the taps with toothpaste, leave to dry and wash off. Works a treat. I will try it on jewellery hilda

ninathenana Wed 04-Nov-15 16:22:09

Your right Charleygirl but rollers aren't such a faff to clean smile

thatbags Wed 04-Nov-15 16:11:33

I just use an e-cloth and the water in the bowl to clean the loo, then flush rinsing the cloth with the fresh water, as we used to do with nappies. We have soft water so there's no build up of limescale to deal with. Cloth gets another rinse in hot water and hung up to dry. It gets chucked in a hot machine wash frequently. Never had a hygiene problem with this method and the loo stays clean with this daily method.

Alea Wed 04-Nov-15 15:59:55

Thanks ninathenana I am assuming this might be American advice (reference to "stove top " too)
Would it be safe to use paraffin oil near oils splatters e.g. on a cooker or behind it, wouldn't be flammable ?(!)
I think coca cola would make quite an expensive loo cleaner when a quick squirt of toilet duck (or even cheaper bleach) does the job. I mean who has truly dirty loos among us??
